- Thanks for tuning in to watch my urban sketching, ink and watercolour tutorial! Don't forget to check out my channel where I have hundreds of different urban sketch tutorials, as well as other watercolour and ink sketching guides for everyone from beginners to more advanced!
If you'd like to support my channel you can buy me a 'Coffee' on KoFi - ko-fi.com/tobyurbansketch
When I reach my goal I'll upgrade my sketching tutorials with a new camera and use my old camera to give an extra view point in my videos! Perhaps my face, perhaps my watercolour palette, or some close ups of my process!
Here is a previous of one of the bitesize chunks from my latest skillshare class. In this case a FULL DEMO!
You can find the full class here on SKILLSHARE 👉 - bitly.ws/viDd (affiliate link)
This class is all about ink, line and pen work. We look at different hatching techniques, getting your quality of line work right, and simple ways to build shadow and texture with both soluble AND waterproof ink.
This specific class is one of the three demonstrations, that draws together the other 12 lessons into an actionable and fun bit of sketching. It looks at using simple fountain pen inks, and water washes over the top, to build up lovely tone in our sketches and finish with a really beautiful image.
The advantage of skillshare is that it's a platform where I can put together a logical and ordered set of lessons, into a thematic class. With a demo (or in this case 3 demos) and project that pulls it all together.
With the project, you can upload your own for feedback from me and the rest of the community!

You make it look so easy!! Thankyou so much for your teachings sir!!!
You are very welcome
Love it!
Thanks!
I love the added frame! Thanks for all of your videos Toby.
Thanks for the video! I really like the idea of using two different colors fountain pen ink. I’ve tried one color and I over did it with the wash. I was using too much water. I really like the border too. I’m going to try this.
No worries, and enjoy!!
Loved this!
Thank you for a lovely tutorial Toby 😊
Thanks Susan
Thank you once again. I use soluble ink pens a lot and it's really inspiring to see your outlook on this medium.
You are so welcome!
love your work tony
Thanks!
very inspiring! 🤔
Thank you! 🙂
Hi..I have a interest In urban sketching,I like the cartoonish look of it..I think I'll follow you if you don't mind, your good.. thanks..
It would be my honour :)
Can I ask a question, do you practice these sketches before you make the video, or are they spontaneous?. Reason I ask is I am never sure where to stop or if the composition will be correct at the end, I am thinking if I do one or two or three interactions of the same at least one might work before the energy runs out and the sketch becomes stale. At the moment I only do one if it works ok if not I’m upset because I ruined it , cannot find the happy balance. I have only been painting for three months and was struggling to find a media/ method I like now I have found your channel I am trying to stay close to your methods, it seems to fit my personality a bit more, i hope you don’t mind.
They are mostly spontaneous, sometimes I haved sketched the scene before - for example if it's a sketc of my home town I've sketched most places several times so although the sketch is spontaneous... I've also sort of had practice.
I often have a point I'm trying to make in my sketch too, e.g. something to demonstrate, so I will have planned in my head certain steps to take.
Re composition, try stopping before you think you're done and having a break. Come back, look again, and if it doesn't feel finished then add some more ... That's how I do it if I'm feeling a bit underconfident!
Thank you! I love these kind of sketches.
Just a few questions. What kind of paper do you use with ink washes? And which nib size is your fountain pen?
Check my supplies link and you'll find your answers :)
@@TobySketchLoosethanks for your reply, but I can't find a supplies link?

I mentioned to my art instructor how easy you make this seem but how relatively difficult I found it myself. And he said, “He’s been doing it for thirty years; you’ve been doing it for thirty minutes. What did you expect to happen?” Right.
There is always an element of this, whilst I'm not sure how much I've improved over the years, I now do something in 5 minutes that would have taken me an hour before
@@TobySketchLoose Thanks for the feedback. Aside from my sketches not being all that good, I find as well that my painting, intended to look spontaneous, simply looks contrived - which is what it is. Nevertheless, your videos are encouraging and I’m learning a great deal.
Hi Toby I really enjoyed watching that, would love to give it a go, my water soluble ink doesn’t bleed much, what is the brand of these inks, thank you
Thanks!! And for the inks... Got them listed on my website... check out urbansketch.co.uk/supplies-1 for more info
@@TobySketchLoose Hey Toby, great video! This is a dead link and you only seem to have waterproof inks on your blog? (maybe I'm looking in the wrong place). Love using soluble ink but up till now only used the cartridges in new pens before they ran out and I fill up with my Platinum Carbon ink. Any suggestions on a brand for bottled soluble ink would be great as I hate buying plastic!
Ah, you're using the red ink as a kind of watercolor pencil 😁 Have you ever tried Inktense? I find that brand a bit chalky.
I've tried inktense indeed, I found th textures a bit odd - I could quite get on board with it
I was giving you a thumbs up. I accidentally touched thumbs down! Ugh! I gave you a thumbs up anyway.
Oh thank you! hehe
