- In this video, I'll show you how to take a sketch of your own artwork, and bring it into Affinity Designer 2 on the iPad, and convert it to an SVG for the Cricut. This involves tracing over the sketch, converting to curves, combining the shapes, and exporting as an SVG.

10 stars, nope 1 million stars to you a phenomenal video! Thank you ❤❤❤
Aw thank you so much!! ❤️❤️❤️
I am so lucky to meet this channel, I am looking to see how to use affinity designer 2❤.
Thank you!
I have been WAITING for a tutorial like this for the new Affinity Designer 2 on iPad. Thank you!
YAY!!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so, so much, Heather! I just moved from Affinity Design 1 to 2 and was so frustrated that my SVG files weren’t importing into Design Space correctly. I use AD exclusively for designing stained glass patterns and then import DS to cut the pattern pieces on permanent vinyl, It makes stained glass creation so, so much more accurate and fun. Anyway, you rock! Thank you!
I will be posting a link to your video to my Stained Glass groups. Others will love this as much as I do. ❤
OMG that's SO cool!!! I dabbled in stained glass a little bit! I even have the supplies at home! But I never have time to do it anymore. Some day I hope I can pick it back up!
Thank you! Simple and straightforward! 🎉
Thank you so much for the step by step video! Awesome presentation!
You're so welcome! So glad you liked it! ☺️
This was a great tutorial. Appreciated the circle on everything you clicked on. Much easier to follow. Also your advice from the last video about the bleed on canva to kdp worked. I was able to publish my books. Thanks again! 🙂
Yay!! I'm so glad you enjoyed it and that you were able to publish your books!!
Thank you so much. So much appreciated
It's kind and understandable. Thank you.
Aww, you're so welcome 💖
Thanks so much for this easy to understand video. It’s so on point for making SVG’s for Cricut. Having those two topic paired is just what I needed to be confident in making some files.
Yay I'm so glad!!!
This is the. Tutorial i was looking for.. thanks!
Glad I could help!
Okay these teaching skills are unreal Lol. Thank you so so much ❤
You're so sweet!! ❤️🥰
I did it!!! Thanks for all the help! You made it easy! Can't wait to add color
Yay!!! I'm so glad!!
Me too lol
Thanks Heather ❤
You're so welcome 🙃
This is very very helpful thank you xx
❤️❤️❤️
I have been searching for this exact tutorial for a while now and finally landed here. I do not have an iPad or a Cricut so I kept bypassing your video...what a mistake I made!
I have a MacBook and an XTool M1. After purchasing Affinity Designer and (re)learning vector software, I thought I would be able to figure out how to make my own svg files to create my own artwork and I was wrong. THANK YOU for putting this out there as there is no one else doing this in such a clear and concise way. Definitely Liked and a Subscribed and again...THANK YOU so much for sharing!
Ooh a laser engraver?? That is so cool!!! Thank you so much for your kind words, and I'm so glad that my tutorial helped you!! Always let me know if you have any questions along the way, and let me know if you have any specific video requests ❤️
Dankeschön für das tolle Video ❤
Ich komme aus Deutschland und kann fast gar kein Englisch, aber du erklärst das so schön ruhig das auch ich es umsetzen kann vielen lieben dank!
Das freut mich sehr! ❤
Really great tutorial! I’ve been thinking that maybe I should download Affinity to my ipad - Procreate isn’t great for drawing clean lines, and now I see I should! I love the pace and clarity of your videos, you are a great tutor.
Yay, I'm so glad you liked the video! Affinity Designer also has a 30 day free trial I believe.
For drawing with clean lines in Procreate, the one thing that has worked well for me is BeeJay Del's "Standard Inker Streamline" brush in his brush set that he has for sale. It makes beautiful lines! I use it for all my coloring books & coloring pages!
@@HeatherCashArt Thanks a lot for the tips! I'll buy both! :D
Loved your tutorial! I am super new to this (like as of today)... any idea what I might be doing wrong- all my nodes are gone after drawing everything. I just have the lines, no nodes on them, so when I click the combine tool everything is grayed out, I can't click add. I must be clicking something unknowingly to make all the nodes disappear, I just don't know what everything does in affinity designer yet lol
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it! There are two different select tools (arrow tools) and if you use the second one (it's underneath the first in the toolbar) then you should be able to click on your shape and see the nodes.
If not, can you send me a screen recording to my email heather@heathercash.com?
I love the pencil you use on your tutorial. What’s it called please?
It's just the standard apple pencil, got it off Amazon. Oh unless you mean how it's cute and colorful! I got the decorative vinyl wrap off of Etsy!
What about then Pen Tool. Place nodes, then adjust after. I think there are dynamic settings to make it look similar to this as well, no?
Yes that's true. I usually do that if I'm stuck using the mouse to draw. I love being able to draw how we do naturally.
Did you ever find out how to make a file a certain size that will carry over to design space? Like for patterns?
Yes I did! I think the only thing I had to do was to have "set view box" unchecked... If I remember correctly... But let me know if that doesn't work and I'll look again!
Oh actually, it's in my reply to one of your other comments, I just found it. I'll paste it here too:
I got this working in Affinity Designer 2 for the computer. Make sure you have your ruler set to inches because when I opened up a file I had created with AD1, even though I had created the file at 8.5x11, in AD2 it opened up as 20-something inches.
Make sure in your export settings you have 72 DPI, and set view box UNCHECKED.
However I haven't tested it on the IPAD version yet though.
Let me know if this doesn't work - you can email me at heather@heathercash.com and send me your file and I'll take a look!
Oh shoot. Sorry, I think I remember reading your comment now. Thank you!
@@KristeenaD no problem! ☺️
Do you know how to make svgs that are specific sizes that will transfer as such to design space? Like for making cut files for sewing patterns?
I have not figured out yet how to get them to come in as the exact size. Have you actually found SVGs that you have bought somewhere that do come in at the correct size? If so let me know where you found them because I would want to investigate!
@@HeatherCashArt Yes. I sew bags and the pattern designers sometimes make cut files for some of the pieces. They upload in the exact measurements needed.
@@KristeenaD where do you get the patterns from? Etsy? Could you email me one of the files so I can take a look? heather@heathercash.com
Ok, I found a pattern and downloaded it. I opened it up and then exported in both Illustrator and Affinity Designer. Adobe Illustrator saves it as the proper size, but Affinity Designer doesn't. So for now the answer is to use Illustrator, but I will also try to mess around with Affinity's settings and see if it's a certain setting or what.

Can I do this in version 1?
Maybe, I can't remember if certain features aren't there... But you can try it. If you come across any issues let me know and hopefully we can find a workaround!
I am having one heck of a time with this. I have created my design with shapes. I'm trying to create a witches broom with an oval and a rectangle. The nodes are adjusted to my liking and then I added both shapes together to create a single design. When I export it as an SVG and then go into Design Space, there is nothing. It doesn't show a preview image and it tells me there is an image upload error. What am I doing wrong?
Do you have some text in your svg? That will cause it to not upload.
You can try deleting elements until the upload works, then you can find the culprit. 🕵️
@@HeatherCashArt I've tried it with and without text. When I added the text to try it, I followed your video tutorial how to add text to your SVG. This afternoon I followed you video SVG Basics - Stroke vs Shape for Cricut with just a word, converting it to curves, ungrouping it then adding it together for a single shape, and Design Space still won't upload it.
@@coloradoleen can you email me your svg? heather@heathercash.com
Do u offer any courses or is everything on CZcams?
Hi Cee! I have everything on CZcams because I love that it is free for people to watch 🙂 I do also offer private help sessions over Zoom if you're interested in that! You can schedule it on my shop website:

Lol. Can someone please tell me where the erase button is on the iPad for affinity designer I’m going to lose my mind.
I don't think erase really exists in Affinity Designer for vector objects. I know Illustrator does have it though. You can either use the node tool to select your point and move it, or delete the nodes, or use the shape operations like subtract front, etc
