Rotopax DIY Water Spigot

- I was asked a while ago from subscriber about the spout I have on the Rotopax Water Container. Now that the Jeep is up and running again I have begun working on some of gear that's going in and onto the Jeep and I thought I would touch on the spouts while I'm replacing them.
The spouts I use are just generic water container spouts from the local fuel station and they can be found almost all over Europe in the same style but with a different cap. All you need to do is boil some water and heat them up, pull them apart and pop the tap inside the original Rotopax Lid.
Then add an O-ring and that's basically it. They are really cheap, readily available (for me) and you can carry a couple spare just in case they brake one day on a trip and you need to replace them.
I have provided some links below to sites that sell them but bear in mind that you find these general taps for much cheaper on eBay and in general stores. I couldnt find any in the USA that looked like the ones that I use but the official Rotopax Spigot isnt that expensive, its just a big longer.

Extravagant purchases with money that may feel like it's "burning a hole in your pocket" can weigh pretty heavily on the heart, especially when you "secretly" want to keep what you've bought and still want keep the Mrs. happy. 😁

But it' s OK.. After all, the difference is equivalent to a lunch or dinner... And fortunately I don't have any Mrs. to keep happy (yet) 😂😂

Hey John, thanks for watching. I don't think you can go wrong with that spout kit, plus its not expensive at all. Probabaly more reliable too. The garage is a working progress but at least its warm when the winter rolls in. Makes such a difference. Take care and thanks again.

I drive the new Cherokee. It’s a pretty compact rig. As such these Rotopax are honestly the best “fit” for my needs and my vehicle size. I haven’t pulled the trigger yet on them because I plan to start really with just one mount. The big question? Honestly, water or gas? I’ll likely use water WAY more.
Its the same with me really. The jeep isnt a bit vehicle so its about maximising space. For me its water but I wouldn't mind a large diesel rotopax on the roof.

@@WorkshoptoWilderness I'm not trying to pull your leg here but as mentioned fractions of a second your model same light blue color in snowy conditions. I am a bit of sony guy myself and I guess the ad were directed to me through my search for a new mobile phone, sorry to say i'm now a displeased samsung owner.

Pretty cool brother, on a side note, when you lock your rotopax with that top spinner, you can just unscrew both spinners at the same time regardless of they keyed part on top. ask me how i know lol...................... It keeps honest ppl honest I guess haha
I thought about that also. I guess you can tighten the heck out of it but ultimately it can be taken off. Did someone steel them from you?

By the way are you using also Rotopax fuel cans ? Cap gasket leak is kinda pi**ing me off and it looks like this is a common issue.

Thanks for watching! I don't use the rotopax fuel cans but I have heard the same as you with them leaking. I find it quite surprising because they are not cheap.
I honestly have no solution as I don't have any hands on experience with them, sorry I cant be more help.

G'day Mike, yep great design concept these, but yeah $$$. Shame the pair aren't keyed alike and they will no doubt put some extra load on the hinges especially when full, though knowing you, you'll have already factored that in.
Q. if I may; being fully exposed to the elements, have you ever had the water and/or the tap freeze up ?

The hinge load might be an issue. It won't make a difference when open as the strut will support it all but its when closed I'm still pondering about. It's going to pull down on the hinges. I think a hydraulic strut will actually help in this case as it will stabilise it all. Still not sure. With regards to winter, I haven't driven for long enough for it to freeze before. Even in -20c its remained liquid possible due to it moving constantly. Its had some ice pieces in it but never totally frozen. Normally in winter camping I take them into the awning room with the diesel heater.
Re freezing: Just to add plastic is (normally) a very good thermal insulator :)
None of the ones I found worked for me. They don’t seem to be common in the US.

Do you have a jerry can for extra fuel?
I don't tent to carry extra fuel unless on long journeys. I wouldn't mind getting a large rotopax on the rack with diesel in it.
