This is one of the most famous pieces of Bach.
Bach originally wrote this as part of a cantata for the fourth Sunday of Advent, but, to his justified disgust, nepotism meant he was not given the job in Weimar that would have allowed him to perform the piece. Bach shelved it and revived the cantata (for a 2 July performance) after he gained the choirmaster's job at St Thomas' in Leipzig.
I performed this piece for a Remembrance concert this year because the piano arrangement here is by Myra Hess, one of whose many claims to fame was setting up daily lunchtime concerts in the National Gallery during WW2 to substitute for the cancellation of all evening performances. This piece was played as an encore at the first concert and many times during the series.
The original is the cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben BWV147a.
