Donny Hathaway is a great example of someone who can move you without doing one riff. These days, with all the runs going on, sometimes, I more impressed by someone who can sing the melody straight but still moves me. I believe that in the days of oversinging, riffs, runs, and embellishments, that it takes even more skill to stick to the melody. Half of the time, most younger singers don't even know what the real melody is because it's been embellished so much.
Anyone who has been in vocal training class and understand the mechanics of singing operatic they would recognized the type of singing Ms. Rucker is singing. It is not quite falsetto although many people categorize it as so. It is a very difficult technic of using your kegal muscles, diaphram and resonating space to sing. When a person sings full voice they are actually putting the strain on their throat. This type of singing preserves the throat. It is much easier to hit very high notes.

Chrystal's natural voice placement causes her mid and upper register to naturally sit in what one might call the passaggio voice which is part of the full (real) voice but has a mix-voice tonal quality when compared to the withdrawn hard voice. For some people, depending on their natural voice types, it may take effort, conscious changing of voice placement, and/or difficult technic to get into their "passagio" area especially if they are not lucky to have very wide ranges.

For eg. certain songs you just know is Beverly Crawford or Vanessa Bell-Armstrong, or vice versa with Nikki or Karen. I was just saying i have never heard anyone sing this song like Kim. Crystal did an excellent job and the song was anointed.

@Clemsonshawty I am very good at discerning vocal registers, placement and technique, and I guarantee you 100% that no part of this video was "false" (i.e "head-voice" technically). Chrystal sings in chest voice like most contemporary gospel singers, but she has a light/creamy voice and what people sometimes mistake as falsetto is usually her upper-full-voice/passaggio tone. Actually her voice type is not rare.

Are you talking about the forward toned voice which can sound like falsetto or head voice (but it's really full voice) that the opera sopranos who actually sing in full voice use? Either way, I'd also have you know there are people who can't sing in a key or sing to save their lives that have natural voices which sound like Crystal and some even more falsettoish than Crystal's (believe me!).
