The costume drama series, Downton Abbey, written and created by Oscar-winning writer Julian Fellowes, stars Academy Award-winner Maggie Smith as a Dowager Countess of an Edwardian English country house in 1912. The series portrays the lives of the Crawley family and the servants who work for them, in a time before the last vestige of a century’s old tradition were stripped away by World War and the modern age. The all-star cast also includes Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern.

Matthew was an irreplaceable part of this show. It was never the same after his death because something crucial was missing from the cast, the dynamics, and even the themes. Matthew was all those things that were missing, the show was simply incomplete without him.
He had to go away. So Mary got a baby heir and his money, and would rule Downton in facto for 20 years.

Indeed, it was quite the unfortunate event to see him go.
Matthew made Mary click. It went beyond the actors having a winning natural chemistry.

@@mbbno I agree to some extent. Mary really wasn't an easy person to live with but she was always loyal and true to the people who mattered most to her. The love between her and Matthew was something pure and genuine, even if she showed her darker side to others like Edith. It's not because we have the same blood as someone that we will necessarily have a deep connection. Mary was terrible to Edith most of the time but I can understand that through her upbringing.

Yes. I understand that the actor wanted to leave but the fact is, the story needed Matthew. More than just the characters, the show felt incomplete without him.

It's funny that I had to rewatch the scene where they meet years later to realizes that the Mathew character went absolutely slack jawed when she walked in the room. The first time I saw the scene the only thing that registered was his embarrassment over what he said not meant for her ears.

I just can't get over how beautiful Mary looked at the beginning of the series. The dresses, the hairstyles... everything suited her perfectly.
Somehow she never looked as good in the post WWI fashion, imo.
I agree. I always thought that change was made to represent the pain and struggles in her life that made her more harsh, hurt and wounded…versus when she was young, innocent and naive.

That's an interesting take. I mean, with her figure type, she should have looked great in 20s fashion, really. So that's not it.
But some of the outfits, they put her in, were downright dowdy. Nothing the fashionable and somewhat vain Mary would have chosen, imo. Even as a mother and estate manager. But maybe it was meant to show, that even quite a while after Mathew's death, she was still somewhat withdrawn from the world.

I never watched the show but have seen quite a few clips on YT and that bang-bob they had her wear towards the end of the series was simply tragic. Very aging look for her.

I love this storyline, there are all the ingredients of a great love. In the season 1 their relationship is very difficult and keeps us in suspense! They must overcome misunderstandings, difficulties, pride and prejudices!!! They are very conditioned by what their social role requires them and Mary matures only in the end and can not forgive herself for the affair Pamuk ... But what is immediately clear is that they are destined to love each other... Thanks for this video
I loved Dan Stevens as Mathew Crawley, especially how he made the character drip with charm so the whole world couldn't resist falling in love with Mathew right along with Mary's character. But after seeing him in almost all his projects after Downton he is truly one of my favorite actors. His comedy role in the Eurovision Song Contest movie-- brilliant and completely unexpected. Or his perfectly calibrated performance as a robot in I'm Your Man -- As an actor he's a chameleon!
He was right, we were wrong -- Stevens knew he could have had a long lucrative career playing some version of Mathew Crawley over and over again, but how much nicer to see him in new ways flexing his acting chops for our entertainment.

Supe de su existencia por Aubrey Plaza, ya que ella aparece en Legion. Y tengo la firme creencia de que todos o al menos la mayoría de actores de D.A están infravalorados. Yo estoy obsesionada en este momento con Michelle Dockery, y he visto Godless, una miniserie western que ella protagonizó y Good Behaviour, una serie de 2 temporadas. Y me sorprende muchísimo la versatilidad que posee. Espero verla en un papel dramático, ojalá junto a Sarah Snook o alguna mujer increíble, me parece estúpido que con todo el calibre que tiene solo haya estado nominada a premios y no haberlos ganado. Ademas, me encanta que ella hace las películas de D.A porque le gusta su personaje y le gusta el cast, y siempre es lo suficientemente humilde para aceptar que gracias a D.A tiene todo lo que hasta ahora ha conseguido.
Agree with this so much. As sad as it was that he left the show so early and shattered the perfect love story with Mary, he's built exactly the sort of career he wanted-- avoiding being typecast and becoming a real chameleon. Walking away from such a hit was a huge risk, but it's paid off for him, and I'm honestly really happy for him.
I just finished watching the second movie. So glad Mary's imposter husband was not in it. Matthew is Mary's true husband.
I didn't understand why she kept him waiting so long long for an answer when she knew she wasn't going to tell him about Pamuk and accept.

To this day haven’t seen past season 3, couldn’t be bothered without Matthew😢 I’m guessing Mary regressed to her b!tchy ways not out of grief(maybe a little) but mostly because the person who made her a better version of herself wasn’t there anymore... and they took Sybil from me fkn hell S3 was brutal.

What's so sad is that Mary would have gone ahead and married Matthew the moment he first proposed had it NOT been for her Aunt's meddling. She was going to trust her instincts but she second guessed herself and her aunt made her believe it would have been a considerable descent socially, when the REVERSE was true. AND what's more, Matthew was already thinking of a way to have Mary obtain some authority as an heir (even as a woman should never be afforded this). Everyone underestimated Matthew's abilities until he later came into money.

Believe it or not these two clicked from the very moment they met. Too bad Dan felt he had other chances out there and ended up getting killed off after George was born. Looks like Mary will end up a dowager countess of sorts now that she is the next Lord's mother and still alone.

I noticed that in some scenes in the series that the women still ware thats hats when there at the diner table, the question is, do aristocratic ladies sometimes ware there hats at the dinner table, i never saw the queen wearing a hat at the dinner table so it must be fiction, but if anyone knows different please let me know.

Can’t watch them kiss at the end. Matthew is too good for Mary. She does not deserve him. She is so arrogant and more interested in the estate than Matthew.

Mary was attracted to Matthew only after the Pamuck incident.... no one wanted her after she was tainted and matthew was the only one who genuinely forgave her. And after marriage, she was respectable again...
