  • www.truthforlife.org || By: Sinclair Ferguson - Jesus gave to His Church the Lord’s Supper as a sign of His covenant love, yet believers may sometimes participate in a shallow, perfunctory way. Teaching from 1 Corinthians, Sinclair Ferguson helps us develop a deeper understanding of this gift by discussing eight aspects of the ordinance: benediction, communion, consecration, commemoration, repetition, proclamation, anticipation, and self-examination. Pastors are encouraged to share an appreciation of this gospel sign with those they lead, which will strengthen their fellowship with Jesus and with each other.

    Thank you so much for this faithful presentation. This is an event in a church I recently attended, which was scheduled to take no more than 7 minutes (500 people attended) due to all the other "important" things that had to happen during the service. Oh the loss!
    I couldn't help but think of an old favourite hymn we sang. I haven't included all the verses:
    No Gospel like this Feast
    Spread for Thy Church by Thee;
    Nor prophet nor evangelist
    Preach the glad news so free.
    All our Redemption cost,
    All our Redemption won;
    All it has won for us, the lost-
    All it cost Thee, the Son;--
    Thine was the bitter price,
    Ours is the free gift given;
    Thine was the Blood of Sacrifice,
    Ours is the wine of Heaven!
    Here we would rest midway,
    As on a sacred height,
    That darkest and that brightest Day
    Meeting before our sight;
    From that dark depth of woes
    Thy love for us hath trod,
    Up to the heights of blest repose
    Thy love prepares with God:
    Till, from self’s chains released,
    One sight alone we see-
    Still at the Cross, as at the Feast,
    Behold Thee, only Thee!

      Susan. I have been jumping and shouting also. But I'm neither " pentecostal " nor "5-point calvinist". The communion " the table" table is "in memory of ME". SO . . .what is In memory of HIM ?
      All of a true christian . . . what we are, and ever will be, is about HIM. And every thing HE is about. This is the way HE said things should be.
      Any thing else said about this table spoken by man is false teaching. The elements are bought at the grocery and have in themselves no virtue at holiness. The timing is "often" , not as man says. The place is where believers meet. I believe that if an unbeliever "takes" the elements, they only eat so much bread and grape as they might any other time. Just like without faith and conversion, baptism is just a bath. A non believer doing anything without faith is fatal for eternity anyway.
      Christians need remember to remember CHRIST in all things. This includes interactions between believers. 1 Corinthians 10 and 11 discuss interactions between brothers n sisters, specifically at meal time. Read the whole. If we have issues we need examine ourselves and then fix that. Then bring our "gift" of love to the table with a clear conscious.
      I believe this is his point. Before jumping into a great big "no no no ! ! !,. Think of the Two greatest commandments. The " second is like the first. .". Matt 22:37-40. HIS words not mine.

    1st QUESTION: Do I have to become a member the church I attend after I completed a membership class, but haven’t met with the elders yet for an interview before I am able to participate in the LORD’s supper? Perhaps I’m
    overstepping my boundaries?
    2nd QUESTION:
    My sister in Christ who is very dear to me especially because she was relentless in inviting me to her church because of the expository Bible teaching, the gospel being proclaimed frequently, church meal every week after service and friendly inclusive people. My issue is that my friend that initially wanted me to come let me know last Sunday that she doesn’t believe in women or children partaking of the Lord’s Supper as it was only men at the first Lord’s Supper. Please if you could address this issue as I believe she is misguided or misunderstanding and I do love her so and she is 88 years old! She’s is in pretty good health overall. God bless you!

    He told Noah how to specifically build the Ark, He told Moses how to specifically, build the tabernacle. For something so important, He would be specific and say exactly what it should be, and would not leave it up to man to do what they feel like.
    1. If it is meant to be bread, then why is there so much versions ?
    What is it meant to be, bread, wafer, cracker ? What is it ?
    Isnt God specific ?
    2. How often should it be taken ?
    3. What is the recipe ?
    4. What happens if you cant get hold of this bread, cracker or wafer, especially with this lockdown ?
    5. Who's hands made this bread, cracker or wafer ?
    6. How does it affect the spiritual man ?
    Then if we are the body of Christ, then how can it be a symbol of his body, when we are now the body of Christ ? 1 Corinthians 10 vs 16: For we being many are one bread and one body. are now the body of Christ. 1 Corinthians 12 vs 12 - 14.
    Jesus said that I am the living Bread and if you eat of me, you shall live. The word eat, means to believe.
    Matthew 26 vs 29: He said He wont drink it a new, until He drinks it an new in His father's Kingdom. He was saying that He would no communicate or interact with them, in the literal flesh as He was, but letting them know that He was about to be offered, but He would come back and fellowship with His people in the Spirit. Acts 2 shows the outpouring of the spirit upon the true worshippers who waited for Him as He had instructed and promised.
    John 4 vs 24: They that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.
    Romans 14 vs 17: Shows clearly that the Kingdom is not natural but spiritual. The Kingdom is not in meat or drink, but righteousness and peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. This makes it clear that, whatever He was teaching, it was spiritual. They that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.
    Why hold on to a symbol, when Jesus Christ is the reality ?
    How can we take a natural piece of bread, wafer or cracker that passes out in the toilet, to remember Him, who is Spirit ?
    I believe that their is a great misunderstanding, of what Jesus was trying to teach them. I dont believe that he was instigating a literal ceremonial supper or feast, but used their common feast or practice, as he always did, in order to teach them something deeper and something spiritual, and that was the relationship and fellowship with each other and with Him.
    When we have a deep spiritual relationship with Him, in submission, prayer, the word, and worship, then our relationship is enough to remind us of what He did on Calvary. Do we need a literal and natural piece of bread to remind us of Calvary?
    The truth is, a piece of bread, cracker or wafer should not be the trigger, to us remembering His death, but our relationship with Him. When we got our relationship in place, then we will always remember what He has done and what he is still doing.
    Please note that whatever, goes in the body, ends up in the toilet. God is greater than that.
    His teaching was about relationship and fellowship

      Jesus told us to do it. Paul told us to do it. So I'm going to say yes, we need it. We are that in need of his help--we need a simple metaphor of Jesus' great work of salvation for us.
      We needed sacraments in the OT, and we need sacraments in the NT.

      Sir, with respect and some dignity, most of your questions and many of your answers are based on a human reasoning. And quite frankly, a very serious deficit in whole Bible teaching. You are not alone in this because so very many ( a percentage ? 85-90%) of all teaching and taught people have received this same message. Start over again with Mr. Begg's message and try to listen with fresh ears. Don't just jump on a single piece of it in some "indignation" and ask GOD to reveal truth to you and erase man made mis-teachings. We can talk more on this if you wish.

      @@mikedickison5003 I believe that you missed the understanding of what Jesus Christ was trying to teach his disciples, for the word of God is spirit and life and spiritually discerned. God has revealed the truth and the truth is what has been presented. If you had said that you dont understand what I wrote, then, I would accept that, but you did not. Why not address my questions and points raised, then show me where I am wrong.

    Not the church in the Bible. Speak many Bible truths, transgress horribly by additions and omissions. Smooth speakers the Lord warned about.
