Gary Gallagher joins Chris Mackowski to talk about Gary's newest co-edited volume of essays on primary sources, "Civil War Witness and Their Books: New Perspectives on Iconic Works."
I love everything about Gary he has taught me so much about the Civil war more than any other Historian he explains everything so well and I could listen to him all day long
A thing I now keep in mind when reading Southern soldier accounts & secondary sources like Freeman, is that they disappear the large number of slaves who performed logistical tasks from cooking, teamsters, ambulance drivers, stretcher bearers, trench diggers, & personal servants for officers (& some enlisted), which freed large numbers white soldiers for deployment to the infantry where the Union armies had to provide large number of their own soldiers to perform these functions. It is still really under covered in history, I think.

As a British historian, I've learned some new things from Gallagher in the last year and been reminded of some neglected principles.
Legend!

Are there lists of what he "edited" in these works he is editing? What does he take out, add, or change?
"Shades of Gray and Blue"
