  • @chriskule4663

Lincoln had his heart set on cutting Lee off via the South Moutain passes. The logistics would have been routed through Frederick and/or Harper's Ferry, via the B&O and the Canal, or through Northern VA, down the Alexandria & Orange, which the AOP eventually did. This eventually required use of the Western MD to evacuate part of the wounded to Baltimore and Washington, only after the AOP was resupplied through the line to Westminster, including support for the hospitals set up in Gettysburg. How could he possibly have gotten ahead of Lee? Fortunately, the rains held the ANV above the Potomac and Lee, for the first time, built field fortifications to protect his access from Williamsport. The combatants dug the fortifications themselves somehow. How many shovels did they have, and how many slaves?

I truly enjoy Gary’s presentations. I think that is because he is such an animated speaker. He seems so “into” his subject that the listener becomes involved too. I am a nurse. Civil War studies started with looking at the sick and wounded, treatment they received and the doctors involved in their care. Since then I have studied the people and the battles.. Most interesting. As of the moment, I have visited 10 battlefields. My favorites? Antietam and Getttysburg. For some reason I can Identify more closely with what happened so long ago. I would love to teach Civil War subjects. I have done a great deal of teaching as a nurse. I know I would be good because of my great interest in this subject.

If it wasn't for the scout/spy Harrison Lee would have been destroyed in Pennsylvania. Lee had no scouts following the AOP due to some personal in-fighting within his Calvery and Stuarts being bogged down with captured Union supplies. Longstreet didn't fancy the idea of a full engagement until he knew the strength and positions of Union forces. He felt that moving closer to Virginia and preparing a defensive position was the wiser option.
