    I think it would also work with Blackstar HT pedals. I use the Vox straight 6, but any decent valve pedal will do. As for portable amp, if you want to be covered, something in 100-200W range, used half volume or less. For me Quilter tone block 200 is good enough, class D, compact, I use it more than the valve amp.

    @InTheSh8 Před 3 lety +2

    The Wampler will sound ok if you plug an EQ in between and give it a push in treble. That's basically what a clean channel on an amp will do for a normal distortion pedal that's not a preamp.

  • @peterschmidt9942
    @peterschmidt9942 Před 6 lety +1

    Dave, a quick description of class D amps is that they're switching amps (similar to switchmode power supplies). Whereas a normal A or A/B are push/pull type config and amplify linearly, a class D will turn on/off and switch digitally, hence using less less power - more efficiency, so smaller package. Better sound? Depends who you talk to. I had the guy in the music store try and sell me one when I was specifically looking for a modelling amp! But I reckon these would be great if you have a modelling pedal board and want to connect this to a power amp section + cab on the cheap. I'm actually going to get a stereo 60W class D board off ebay and see how that fairs as a power amp with a preamp in front. I reckon this 30W just runs out of headroom.

  • @InTheSh8
    @InTheSh8 Před 3 lety +1

    Which class D board on eBay is recommendable? Anyone tried these boards for 5 bucks? Is it ok to use one for HiFi and plug your preamp pedal into it? 9V blocks, can they power those?

    Hi Dave. Great review. I think that this tiny amp is a way to fix some issues if your power section on a valve amp fails. I would like to know your opinion about my settings: I use a Blackstar ID Core 100. I plug a valve preamp on the effects loop. On the pedalboard I use a Crybaby wah-wah, a Tubesecreamer, a distortion pedal, a compressor/sustainer, and an analog delay. I play mainly blues, soul and classic rock. Cheers!!!

      Sounds wonderful. Really clean, when crunchy with a lot of power. The Sovtek AX127 gives enough strenght. I use a 335, a Telecaster Deluxe 72 and an Epi LP. I use the Balckstar with custom presets and in manual mode with my pedalboard. Sounds great on both options. Keep rockin'!!

Since im not really giging that much anymore i was wondering if i could use this little guy to power my valve preamp? I play in my room i do not need to be so loud .. I have an amp ,but its modelling amp so mooer ge200 and my blackstar id core 10 v2 are not good at all, they are awful together. So people recommended to me to make this combination and i would either get blackstar HT 112 1x12, MARSHALL MX112R 1X12 or orange micro terror 1x8 what do you recommend ? thank you !!

    Dave, help me if you could please with a completely irrelevant question to this video. Been deliberating for ages between the Rolling Mill Overwound, and Dirty Torque bridges.
    Is one particualrly better than the other? Could you give me a wee run down on the main tonal differences between the two, or general opinions? Just can't decide! Is the dirty torque's gain very manageable, or does it need a good bit of volume reduction to tame it? I like classic, hard rock and a spot of metal.
    Any opinion is much appreciated :)

    • @DaveBarlowGuitar
      @DaveBarlowGuitar  Před 7 lety +2

      I would use the Dirty Torque, this will give you the classic Rock to metal sound you are after in all fairness the sound and feel is very close to a Seymour Duncan JB which is the choice of many rock/metal guitarists for years. If you are used to lower output pickups use the Rolling Mill Overwound for Rock Tones, for more vintage sounds use the std rolling mill, if you have an old british plexi or JTM 45 45 style amp the Blues Engine for a realy good blues or ANGUS type tone. For the price you could try both :)

    I think when you throw something like a sansamp in front if a class d setup magic happens! You end up with a really sweet sounding setup typically AT ANY VOLUME LEVEL. Suddenly you don't want tube amps after such an experience....
    You then become a speaker cabinet and/or speaker IR freek.

    Thought this would be a great power stage for a low draw battery powered bass practice amp for remote locations, but it won’t accept 4 ohm load.
    That’s weird. Most single bass cabinets are 4 not 8 ohm. Is it different for guitar?

    • @DaveBarlowGuitar

      Yes class D is now quite popular in bass amps, which will drive four or eight ohms, but some class D, not all, give different coloration at differing ohms like valve amps, or so I’ve read.

    Good video, I would offer two suggestions however. First, given that the stated purpose was to see how loud it is, I would get a DB meter (free on iPhone app store) and do a side by side comparison with your normal amp. Set your regular amp to gigging level, see how many DBs you're running, and then leaving the meter in the same spot, switch to the Baby Bomb and see if you can match the level. Taking it to a rehearsal so we could hear it keeping up with a band compared to your Blackstar could also be a good way.
    Second suggestion would be to take it up through some increasing levels without a preamp or pedals to see how it responds compared to a tube amp. Mooer claims that it starts to give power amp breakup and responsiveness when pushed.
    Nice work mate!

    A class D device is the type typically used by home stereo equipment, and solid state guitar amps... while A, B, or A/B is typically whats used by tube amps. I have no idea what C is.
    The most notable exception to the rule of thumb about amp power class is the the Katana. The Boss Katana is the only solid state amp that Im aware of which uses class A/B power.

      @stephendavies6947 Před 6 lety +2

      Sorry. Class D is based on pulse width modulation. Basically the output is switched on and off then smoothed to get the audio signal. It has only really become popular in the last 10-20 years as it is technically quite tricky but is very efficient. This efficiency allows you to fit the amp in a small space. Most amps over 10 years old will be class AB and need a reasonable heatsink depending upon the amount of output bias.

      @DaveBarlowGuitar  Před 5 lety

      seems right to me :)

    • @Sco1t_
      @Sco1t_ Před 5 lety +2

      I'm not an electrical or audio engineer, nor an amp designer.
      The Baby Bomb is a power amp, and is really designed to function as a way of making the tone that is shaped by your other pedals and pre-amp loud enough to drive a speaker cabinet. If you're going to use a cab sim and DI anyway instead of a mic'd cab there really isn't much point in having a power amp at all.
      Crucially, don't run the signal out of the Baby Bomb into any other pedals, a cab sim, or a DI. These items are not designed to take the signal level that a guitar power amp sends, meaning that killing them and/or the Baby Bomb is likely. Also, remember that instrument cables and speaker cables are not the same; instrument cables aren't designed to handle speaker level signals (think connecting a garden hose to a fire hydrant), and speaker cables aren't shielded to protect the quiet signal from interference.
      Essentially, what you propose is fine if you just forget about the Baby Bomb. However if you intend to use this live, think about how you'll monitor yourself. Without an amp to stand in front of, you'll be relying on whatever monitors the venue has and you'll have to take the same mix as the singer (assuming your band has one) and everyone else for that matter. Unless you've got in-ears with a personal mix for you, I can't say that I'd be totally comfortable doing that, though that's just me. Also, you then have to trust the sound guy to get levels right, to know when you need a solo boost, to have a decent PA, and mixing ability, none of which are a given in just any pub. I imagine many others have worked through these issues and use this sort of setup so looking around online to find out more is probably a good idea.
      Good luck and keep rocking.

      Most of the cheapie amps are rated into 4 ohm's so it is usually a case of 30watts into 4 ohms and since finding a great speaker into 4ohms is near impossible so you need to have 2 speaks at 8ohms and wire it into
      4ohms. In short the Mooer amp is probably about 15 watts. The mini Vox MV50 (50watts) has the same problem but it has a preamp built in. They make one that only does clean too...about $200 USD
