    I disagree with all these fans who seem to hate "Ob Li Di Ob La Da' I LOVE that song, it makes me happy and when Paul plays it in concert, the crowd LOVES it and sings along outloud. I have BEEN there many times and have seen it for myself. When TRIBUTE Bands play it, people get up and dance and even form a conga line, going up and down the aisles of the theater. It is a FUN, UPLIFTING song. It is ONE of my favorites on the album and in the entire catalogue. This is from a "FIRST generation fan" who was 16/17 in 1964.

    The comment that ringo wasn't even the best drummer in the Beatles was not something lennon ever said. Lennon loved Ringo's drumming which is why he used him on his first album. That line was from a one hit wonder comedian in the 1980's. Ringo is absolutely one of THE best rock drummers. I worked in studios during the 70's and producers would say, 'play like Ringo' . ringo was creative and played for THE SONG, not for himself. his parts always fit the song. Ginger Baker, the drummer for Cream, who i would say was the best rock drummer, said he and his drummer friends would wait for Beatles album releases just to listen to ringo's drumming. Drummers loved ringo.

    Lennon didn't say he wanted to "confuse" people. In fact, Beatles "fans" dissected "Beatles" lyrics for "hidden meanings" that weren't actually there. So when Lennon heard about that he decided to throw in bits of nonsense for their "enjoyment".

    In the words of Woody Allen "It's incredible how subjective these things are." The White Album is very divisive to modern listeners. It is a love or mostly don't like it thing. I can tell you this with certainty, it is warts and all the clearest snapshot of the Beatles on record. There is a lot of internal stuff going on in these songs. It is undeniably unique not only for them, but also for it's time (you are too young to know this). This album was an event, there wasn't anything that remotely sounded like it. I have always thought it was best listened to as a whole, as one thing not a bunch of singles.

  • @davidjones8647
    @davidjones8647 Před 2 měsíci +4

    It's interesting to see most of the reaction to the lyrics be theres not much substance. I think its more down to the fact that the beatles lyrics were always a bit more poetic than modern music with lots of room for interpretation. The lyrics were always crafted with a lot of room for the listener to project their own meaning, which is something I think is much rarer in modern music. Modern lyrics are much more literal and specific, which must make old lyrics seem a lot more meaningless than they actually are, to me a beatles song can mean different things to me on different days depending on my mood/outlook/age, and that feels pretty magical.

    • @Grithron2
      @Grithron2 Před 2 měsíci

      Er..what? They famously made a point of not often putting much effort/consideration into the lyrics - even after discovering Dylan and drugs, McCartney and (especially) Lennon remained instinctively opposed to anything with pretensions to poetry. And it shows.

    This album is sort of the antithesis of Sgt. Pepper in some ways. The Pepper album was a little self-reverential and pretentious and it’s taken an almost mythical status as a masterpiece, especially as time has gone on. All the arrangements, elaborate recording techniques and psychedelic lyrics were them at their most ambitious.
    The White Album’s relative simplicity and more stripped down approach to recording is completely different to everything they did the previous year. It’s not meant to be taken seriously, and really no rock album should be. It’s light hearted approach to songwriting and the eclectic mix of genres is why I love it the most.

    He's the best example of what a rock drummer was at the time , because nobody at that time was like him everybody what is simply do it a straightforward beat that are the changes that the Beatles are doing was almost like Rush before rush, Neil Peart
    Ringo Starr could change it up and play to the song and not subscribe to adding drum roll crap something subscribe to buy later .
    Drum rolls completely hide the fact that a person can't hide the beat do you not know that or do you just talked about aspiring to be like the best drummers of nowadays this guy was the only example all the other rock and roll drummers were coming from jazz and country to record with what was considered rock and roll musicians.
    Yelp Ringo Starr. did exactly what was offered to write or inscribe or induct a new style of drumming into rock and roll which was very much close to a bass players playing lyric style and it changed up the songs and how a song could be interpreted that's an artist artist don't do the same straightforward thing because it's going on in the early sixties know he wasn't innovator.
    Can I play drums of 55 I've been playing drums at the age of 10.

    Human Reviews obviously doesn't have enough background knowledge about the Beatles in general and specifically about the various tracks, which makes this reaction seem superficial.
    The concept is, that the Beatles are consciously or unconsciously - it's hard to judge - citing a high number of genres and musicians, that influenced them. This ranges from Beach Boys/Chuck Berry in Back in the USSR, to country (Rocky Raccoon), Blues (Yer Blues), music of the 1920s (Honey Pie), Bee Gees (Cry Baby cry) to the sound collage (Revolution 9) a la Stockhausen and others. Happiness is a warm gun has some Frank Zappa-Ingredients. And in the slow-motion-like track Long, long, long, they seem to stop time.
    By the way, one can't say they invented the heavy metal genre, but they popularized it and encouraged other musicians to go down this path through the kick ass track Helter skelter. This all happens with a remarkable virtuosity and versatility, that is second to none.
    The question, of whether Ringo Starr is the greatest drummer is irrelevant. In general, there are no useful standards for something like this. However, any other drummer would have been a foreign body, as was the case with Jimmy Nicol on the sensational Australian tour in 1964, when he replaced the ill Ringo Starr for two weeks.
    One fact is, that he has played with a ton of other musicians of various genres. The list ranges from Manhattan Transfer to Blues Rocker Kenny Wayne Shepherd. So far in 2024 he has been drumming for Mark Knopfer.
    By the way: to rate the high-class uptempo rocker Back in the USSR lower than Ob-la-di, ob-la-da and some other tracks, is somehow strange...

    I feel like I enjoy The Beatles a lot more than lots of the younger people here because I listened to their entire discography before getting into any more "experimental" or "impressive" bands like King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard or more recently Animal Collective (the latter of which I barely enjoyed for their first few albums and have only recently come around on). I would listen to an album, think it's alright, and listen again a few times throughout the coming weeks and think it's the best thing I've ever heard (this happened with Rubber Soul, Revolver and Abbey Road in particular, but it took me a while to really "get" Sgt. Pepper of all albums).
    I personally don't think any of these songs or any of the musicians involved have to be technically impressive or do something new or experimental. I don't really care if the song is cringey or anything (and I think a lot of people are too harsh on Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da - it looks like they just hate anything that sounds happy). Paul was probably the most technically skilled Beatle, but they were overall a more simple group.
    And I do think that Ringo is considered the best drummer in the world because his style fits The Beatles. You say if he were in another band he wouldn't be considered the greatest, I say if another drummer played for The Beatles instead of Ringo the drums would either be boring or far too complicated for a lot of the music, especially since The Beatles were rather vocal focused. A lot of people say he's the greatest because he doesn't overplay or underplay, and he only does what fits the song and nothing more. He never liked being "flashy" and had to be convinced into doing the drum solo on The End (its the only drum solo in his entire career). He also apparently rarely went put of time, people call him the human metronome. Also that song about a sixteen year old was a cover, still odd he decided to record it though.
    All in all, I find it insanely difficult to give anything a rating, but I do generally hate criticism of anything I like no matter how true the words are, and I'm saying that genuinely. Good album, I don't care if it's poorly paced or messy, and I think it's stupid to compare it to modern albums as if they're supposed to be similar.
