One of the absolute best anime in all of anime history, up there with Ninja Scroll in the "best swordfights choreography" department. Great catch for Nanashi trying to keep his sword warm, I never paid attention to that detail (and I've watched this movie 4 time already). As an animator myself, however, one thing that I DID notice was how Nanashi NEVER breathes during any of his fights. He simply has no time to catch his breath. The only time he exhales is once the fight is over and he confirmed his opponent is either gone or dead. And each time all throughout the movie, due to the fights getting more and more gruesome, you can see his catching his breath getting heavier and heavier.
I'm not sure that is correct, i may be wrong here so don't worry about re-correcting me but isn't nanashi doing something more akin to hyperventilating, lots of quick, short, even spaced (very important) breaths so as to pump the muscles up with oxygen and to make sure that he doesn't have a moment when he has to 'catch his breath' from not breathing, or possibly worse still that he hasn't calibrated his breathing and could be forced to do an in breath when trying to block a particularly heavy blow and therefore end up being weaker against it?
@@jjstarrprod are you dense? Firstly, that's how good entertainment is made, it's the little things and people always spot things that aren't accurate so making it accurate isn't 'DEEP' by any means, it's the bear minimum and if you don't even know that your animation career is going to fail. Plus my point was the inverse of yours, instead of saying there was less breathing, I said more. In what way is that too deep, it's the same level. Unbelievable.
@@jjstarrprod are you going to try and make some ridiculous argument that fortunately for you proves that you are correct because you are an animator and you have been shown the secret texts of animation whereas by due of not being an animator I am therefore wrong. Clown.
I absolutely loved this anime. Up there as one of my all time favorites. I completely missed out on the warming up of the sword steel part, thank you for this.
To anyone reading this comment who has not watched Sword of the Stranger; Go watch it first, don't spoil anything for yourself. This is one of the greatest works of animation ever created.
Innocent child. Royal descent. Hunted by an emperor. Kept in a monastery. Betrayed by one of his closest friends. His blood holds the key to eternal life. Gets crucified. Former soldier becomes his servant, gets baptized by him, finds salvation. There are a ton of other parallels but you can sum up the whole movie as "kid Jesus meets ronin".
I once heard a panel from the president of Studio Bones Masahiko Minami where he told that the Movie was made out of a Labor of Love with no real commercial interest. It was to celebrate their 10 year anniversary. The used the money the made from their TV Series over the years to make the best possible movie they could make.
If you hadn't done such a good job getting me hyped to buy this film, i might've had the scrip to throw at your compelling patreon pitch... Catch-22. Another great film in a mad and unfair world.
Don't EVER play a "flying insect"sound effect that fades from left to right again. With full knowledge it was a sound effect, I almost involuntarily beat the crap out of my neck, and the back of my head. 🫨🫨🫨
You should make video about tower of gods and the Toaru series there both underrated and there is no one really talks about them when there both amazing they probably make a good video 🙃
I like how you slipped that little music sample from Yasuke in there. All of you should check out Flying Lotus and the rest of the artists on his record label, Brainfeeder!
You can tell the plot doesn't give a shit towards the end. The guy who had great ambition dies unceremoniously, the side characters die, the villains with motive dies, the only ones left are the 2 leads and the guy just looking for a sick fight. If the fights and visuals weren't so good it'd be pretentious. Since they are that good it feels good to see even the writer bdeliberately set fire to the entire pretense and give us a good clean epic final battle. "You know why you're here, I know why you're here, enjoy." I thought Kotaro is fine. Seems to be a trend where if a kid is even remotely non-compliant or bratty it's some deal breaker. He acted appropriate to his situation and he was likable.
I'm wondering if all this plot buildup to burn them all down one by one to keep only the 2 simplest characters clashing with each other was not a meta comment from the writers on the state of anime of the 2000, with lot of series having overcomplicated plots that went nowhere and ended with some endless Talk no Jutsu. This movie kinda spits on that very concept by mounting a fairly convoluted plot with lot of diverging characters... before dispatching them all to only leave the 2 purest characters at the end. I always thought it was interesting the movie opens with the final boss Rarou's showcasing his bloody crimson tornado style on these poor bandits BEFORE even introducing Nanashi, who happens to be the 3rd important character (4th if you count the dog) to appear onscreen. It's almost as if Rarou was presented as the main protag, and then the movie pulls a 180° on you by introducing the actual main character, well past 10-15 minutes in the movie.
Easily one of my top 5 movies ever: live action, anime, hallucinations, whatever. I LOVE this movie. I will watch it for the rest of my life. I will pass it on to my grandkids if they're worthy.

I have a hard time deciding whether this or the Ninja Scroll movie is my all time number one. I think NS just edges out SotS because of Nostalgia and my love of Futaro Yamadas novels. Also the Kagero/Jubei relationship. But goddam if i had seen this first, SotS would be number one.
I watched this movie in 2009, when I was 5, maybe 4-5 times. Every time I'd go to the library, I'd make sure no one else would check this movie out cause I would rent it. Still the best anime movie in my opinion. Better the Kimi No Wa, i know, but if you watch it, you can at least see some reason that I'd say that even if it's not true.
