•Wire panel cut dimensions: L= 92" H= 48" trimmed from 16ftX5ft 6ga. utility/hog panel w/ 4x4 square mesh. (Makes 2 panels per sheet) see Tractor Supply Co.
•Panel frame completed overall dimensions: 93.5"x49.25"
•Panel frame cut lengths: Frame Top/Bottom*= 93.5" Vertical Sides=46.25" (3ea- 8ft 2x4's required per panel frame)
*All panel frames were constructed per the cut lengths listed above except for the (3) panel frames that the top and bottom lengths were shortened to account for a gate (referenced in the video).
•Dado width @ 3/8" & cut depth set @ 1"
•8ft 4x4 Post @ 24" depth w/ 3" of gravel and centers set @ 97" apart.
•3.5" #9 outdoor/deck screws (approx. 400 screws used)

Nice looking fence. FYI: I had an Australian shepherd back in the 90's. I built a 6' tall fence around the back yard. He walked up to it & jumped over without blinking. I make it 1' foot taller (7') ... he dug under it. So i added mid-size rocks along the base. All I am saying is don't underestimate an Australian shepherd. They are very smart & stubborn dogs. If they find a challenge, they will never give up on it. That makes them incredible & wonderful, but also challenging. :)
Alexander Ross thanks, andyou couldn’t be more right about the Aussie nature. Ours has picked up the scent for moles and the yard looks like a mine field. He left one sitting on the porch like a trophy the other day. Let’s hope he doesn’t figure out his ability to jump.
Mine was an aussie cattle dog, but she had the same athleticism and persistence.
Fortunately, she was so stuck on us that she jumped the fence just to run around to the front door and beg to be let in!
I miss her, she was a better dog than any man ever deserved.
@@slaplapdog our aussie's loyalty is of the same caliber. He will do anything to be right next to us. The unfortunate issue is any dog/animal within visible range is an immediate threat, and the dog sees red with madness and aggression. I understand that its an inherent trait to protect the herd, but its embarrassing to say the least. Hence, the fence.
My Aussie's can climb a fence no problem, The one I have now is so attached to me she only does it if I ask her too. If I leave the property and she's outside, she will follow. You just have to know your dog 😉
I just bought a home and plan to build a smaller version of this for my dogs on my front porch. My dad used to always help me with these sorts of things so your video is helpful now that he’s not around! Thanks!

Just finished up my fence. I built to most of the same specs and it came out great. I built a cantilevered big gate and mixed it up with some corten corrugated steel at the front. I struggled a bit with the dado at first, having to end up buying a table saw with a long enough arbor for the dado blade AND the dado-ing went a lot slower than I expected, it’s just a lot of wood to dado.

Yours is the BEST I've seen. I'm a 70YO Nanny just bought some property in NC and going to build a house and the lot needs a fence. I thought about using 2- 2x4s to make the posts and sandwich the wire between the boards, but I think yours is a much better idea with the dados. Thanks for the video and God bless you sir!👏

I have been building this fence in my mind and on paper for a year, but had never seen a version of the dato cut done and a fence in a similar climate, like Florida. Got the tools and beer its time to get this fence up. Thanks great video.

Kickback can not be truly understood, respected, and appreciated by those who have not seen it first hand. I haven't used my table saw since seeing someone I thought was a master woodworker chop his fingers off, and I have seen viscous kickbacks as well. Once you understand the power of that table saw, then you can give a thumbs up to your comment.
@@brianandlynphilippines I agree with you 100%. I worked in lumber mills for most of my 20's, and saw some horrific kickbacks (thankfully no serious injuries). I really wasn't trying to make light of kickbacks. I truly am sorry if my comment came across that way. It was certainly not my intention. I'm sorry about your friend by the way.
Everyone should have anti-kick pawls on their table saw. In this case it could save his gonads from becoming a hood ornament. Also, don't stand directly behind the piece of lumber you are cutting.

thanks for your reply sanders. I dont understand it either. I needed a fence for my pups, and i had minimal cash available after purchasing the home, so i looked into doing it for myself. Building a full plank privacy fence defeated the purpose of us moving to the country, so i needed a attractive simple design. I was quoted $20-$25 per ft for a similar fence by a local fence builders, and at approx. 200ft of fence needed, $5000 was a big pill to swallow. I did this fence for a little less than $8 per ft. So, in the end, i a sturdy, inexpensive, attractive fence the contains my dogs. What people are hating or disliking about the fence is their own opinion, but i still have nearly $4000 in my pocket and i got some experience and sense of accomplishment. You cant hate that. Thanks for the outstanding reply! For people like yourself is why I made the video. I had to let it be known about this budget friendly design. I put in a bit of extra time to factory the most height and length for the least amount of scrap left over (aka money lost). The only thing I ask is that you shoot an email of your constrain progress or completion or both. You may have seen it all ready, but I just uploaded my staining and 18month review of the same fence. Another boost of confidence to be had for sure. Enjoy your fence!
I couldn't agree more with Mr. Lombardo's comment. You just gave me the solution I was looking for; trying to find a way to have an open fence that can contain my dogs (Bullmastiffs), provide an open view and be resistant to wind. I will probably use a white opaque stain and add some rails and caps to keep the HOA at bay. An awesome, well thought out and executed design. Well done - American ingenuity, brother. BTW, I want your Chevelle.
Thanks for the reply Kurt. The fence has held up well to my 200lb English mastiff and feisty Aussie. A storm with 50+ mph winds blew through a couple weeks back and a large quantity of neighbors had fencing blow over. Mine is standing strong. Love, Love, Love the fence... one note... When wood gets pressure treated they don't always get the pressure treating chemicals all the way thru the wood... You may have datot'ed an opening into untreated wood... On the top and sides, that won't be much of a problem... but on the bottom grove, water will just sit in there... and you know what that will do. Just thinking...…….
Mike Braun Thanks for the reply… After doing the video I went back and drilled a 3/16 hole in the dado groove about every 8 inches in each of the bottom panel frames and then applied 1 L of water from a bottle in the groove… It has sufficient drainage… Now that the wood has weathered for a couple months I plan to stain now that it will except it instead of bead up. Thanks for helping me with your plans. I have completed my fence using this video as rough guidance. One suggestion to others if they see this. Use a palm router instead of a table saw. It is easier to cut the grooves and a lot safer.

Add to your tool list: Sawhorses and sliding collar bit holder to start your screws. They would both pay for themselves on a project like that, and everybody knows a new project is the best excuse to acquire a new tool.

Old Guy Hustle Thanks for the reply… I was in the middle of building the panels the same way you did yours when I learned about the dado groove and it totally simplified my project.
Depending on the treatment and the screws sometimes pressure treated lumber causes galvanic corrosion in the fasteners and you'll want to watch out for that. Also a flat 2x4 on top isn't ideal because water can pool on it after a rain. If you cut a 10º bevel down each side of the top it'll shed water more effectively.

Excellent video, dude. I've been looking for a solution to keep my dogs contained in one half of my back yard. I settled on the hogwire panel fence, then found your video. GREAT work - it looks amazing. Now I'm off to build mine soon!

What is your annual rainfall where you are located? Do you have insects there that eat wood? Termites, fire and other ants?
Those dadoes will be a way for them to continue to bore their way through the lumber.
If you are planning on adding another wood panel above the panel part of the fence, be sure the top sheds water or it will rot, warp and fail very soon.
The bottom of the panel frame with a dado will catch water and rot away and cause the panel to rust. Also, you can angle the table saw blade to take a small cut from either side of the centerline of that bottom panel board to help it shed water and then leave about 3/4-1" flat in the middle. Use regular fence staples to secure the bottom of the panel.
These panel fences are more decorative and practical for yards and building lots for smaller animals, sheep, goats, dogs, poultry etc... they have clean lines and do not sag.

Question: what insect would eat through pressure treated lumber? The concert protects the wood in the ground and the chemicals in the wood protect from insects, rot and warp “prevention”. I’m confused about your statement on insects because many homes are built with pressure treated lumber for this exact reason. And Yes Texas has Termites and Fire Ants... never seen issues with pressure treated lumber ever... not even after the wood has rotted.
I agree about making the top board slanted slightly for drainage or cap the entire rail with the same stuff log homes are treated with (like a thick lacquer almost apoxy like). And definitely cap the post.
Just my thoughts but other than that, I enjoyed the build too!

Brother watching you build that fence I got a lot of ideas from you I'm a painter by trade we always have Epoxy paint I thought it would be feasible to get epoxy clear resin and put it in there where that data line is at it will seal it up real nice make it last for years or even liquid nail in the trades we work with a lot of Carpenters I do get ideal from them guys also I also said we learn everyday thank you a lot

FYI: They make a post level that has two levels on it and you just strap it onto the post with a rubber band. No claps needed and it costs like $6 at home depot. That will make this build much easier. Thanks for the video.

We're about halfway done, our fence will be ~1,000 feet around (building a dog park). The one addition we made to this because we have about a 30" drop in elevation every 10 feet (we're building with 10" panels) is adding a Simpson LB26 at the bottom to slide the mudboard into. We set these level and drop the panel in. It also prevent twisting of the mudboards, we're in southern Colorado and wood boards turn into pretzels quickly if not used right away and securely fastened down.

Oh i see what you are saying now....at first i thought you meant drilling holes from side to side in the bottom of the panel....but now i realized you mean drilling small holes from top to bottom so water doesn't collect in the bottom dado itself ...

Built my fence like this three years ago. I didnt dado tho.
I took two 2x2s and attached to both sides of the fence tieing the fence at the bottom just as his dado does.
Just less work cutting.
I literally had this same idea but hadn't ever seen anyone do something like this so this is handy to see before I finish up this project lol

Man I wish I would have found this video before I started mine. I am building my fence now as we speak and I put my post at 10' centers but now I learned it makes a lot of waste on the panels and at 80 dollars I'm going to have a lot of cost in waste. Great job I might have to show my video to explain what i did wrong.
I hear ya. I spent a lot of time running numbers to get the most height and length as possible with as little excess waste as possible to make my bang for the buck. I even began with my fence design a total different way and made 3 panels befor stopping and redesigning to the way that you see in the video. Nothing wrong with 10ft centers, just incurs a different set of drawback when hindsight hits you in the butt. You picked the right time of year to do this.. i did it in 100deg temps in SE Texas August. Good luck with the rest if your build.
Sell those short ends on a local market page. Critter people and gardeners would love to have them.

Great looking fence. Also, really liked the tip toward the end using boards with clamps to create a "kickstand" effect to make your posts plumb and while working alone. I will be doing my own fence so that's a valuable tip for me. Thank you!

If your wondering this fence project worked out to about $8 per foot. I was quoted $22 per foot by a fence builder to do something similar. You can probably understand why i did it myself.

Thanks Bonnie, it really turned out great. We've had quite a few people in the neighborhood inquire about doing theirs like this. As we were on a budget a the time of building the fence, we decided to glue down the decorative wooden post caps for the time being, but could always do a lit post at the corners, I agree that would look good.
They have solor lights that will go on top of 4×4 post.

Obviously mine will be on a much smaller scale and I maybe not use 2x4’s since mine won’t need to be heavy duty like an entire fence but love this project and thank you for explaining and sharing your build

That "cutter thing" is called an "Angle Grinder." Trust me, get or make at least 1 push stick for your table saw. Keep your fingers attached to your hands. Just a suggestion but your Dados appear excessively deep. Welded wire fencing cost much less than "Cattle Panels." Just an observation.

Kurt Marucci heck no 🤣 they will bite the wire and just lean back on their haunches till they pull it apart. Now you may have some type of large diameter welded wire in mind. However the small diameter welded wire at hardware stores won’t stand the test of time.
@@shawnhagen6871 Yes, I do have a larger diameter, very stout welded wire in mind. I've seen what happens to the typical grade hardware store wire. I think the hogwire used in this fence is probably pretty sturdy. I also like the fact that high winds can't blow it over, even with 4X4, 8' on center posts
Quik tip! If your bottom board is level no need to level the top too if your sitting on top of the bottom board. Nice fence! Maybe u will get into a fence building and shave some time off.
On the surface the fence looks nice.
But the fence wire its self is not really attached it is sitting loose in the dado groove a good sized dog going at the fence may push the fence wire out of the groove and get loose.
And alcohol and power tools do not mix, glade you came away with all your bits still attached.
James Grunwald Thanks for the reply… I agree that I could’ve practiced a bit more safety during my project, especially when uploading to the world of CZcams. As For the fence, the wire panel is by itself is fairly rigid. When Placed in the dado groove frame it is very sturdy. I’ve Leaned and pulled on it with all my weight and you’d be surprised how little the panel gives. I’m confident that it would contain anything shy of an atv or truck hitting it. It’s worked great for my 200 pound mastiff and 50 pound Aussie. In a recent windstorm, the majority of the people in the neighborhood with a plank fence had significant damage, and mine is still standing without a problem.
Did the same thing and it works great. We get a lot of rain so the horizontal pieces get turned on edge and the groove is cut into the side. If your interested, a groove and dado are practically the same thing except a dado is across the grain and a groove is with the grain.

I had some back and forth with how to explain the same, but went with the name of the blade type for the my explanation to prevent any further confusion should anyone go looking for a dado blade set to cut the groove. I live in southeast Texas and get about 60+\- inches of rain per year and have had no issues with deviation in our first year. Only time will tell. How long has yours been constructed?

Thanks Ken, weep holes are simply holes i drilled from the bottom into the dado channel to allow for water to drain. As far as the spacers, that was a suggestion by youtuber with some dado or wood fence experience. The spacer/shim would used to keep the metal panel from bottoming out in the dado groove, and allow for air movement for quicker evaporation of trapped water. And fortunately i had no kick backs or missing fingers from my less than safe woodworking techniques. If could do it all again i would probably use spacers with the weep holes as well as turning my table saw 90 degress and using a push stick. The fence is holding up quite well.
Thanks for the info. FYI - you used a "groove," which runs with the grain. A dado, runs agains the grain, and a rabbet is on the edge of the board. 😁

Generally, I dont, just because a thing called "laws of attraction" would have some child or vehicle walking right when I get kickback, and it would fly in the street possibly killing or hurting someone or their property...

I have been reading a lot about the effects of todays treated 4x4's with ground contact. Most of the treated 4x4's are only treated for bugs and not rot. Did you ever consider putting your 4x4's on concrete piers with metal post holders

I use post protecters on all of my ground contact projects. Won't do a project without them. Slide the sleeve over post put in ground. Post never come in contact with ground
Great job, if you are living in the city you can't really build anything that you want to build but if you are living in the county you can build anything you want to build , I hate to live in the city because I can't build a aviary for my birds

Thanks for the reply Jason! Yes i agree, and this idea was considered during the planning process. Running the dado or router down the 4x4 post would be economical (saving the cost of 25 - 2x4's @ $4 ea.) as it would become an integral part of the frame for the wire panel to sit in as well as being a sturdy post, but i didnt know if it would be as rigid or efficient as a full frame design, considering i used the vertical frame lengths to screw through to secure to my 4x4 post. With the grooved post method, In my mind, this would make it difficult to secure the top and the bottom frame lengths to the post as you would have to toenail screw at an angle into the post while holding up the panel at the same time.The full frame is also forgiving if you are not precise on your post setting. If youre +/- too much on your post setting it might conflict with fitting your wire panel into the post groove (too tight/too loose). Yes, that is definitely a consideration and looks really cool… At the time of the build we had just bought the house so I didn’t really have any extra money for flashy upgrades. considering how well the fence has held up over the years. I may consider doing that as an upgrade soon, because the current wooden caps are starting to show some wear from UV and weathering

I've done something similar by ripping the 2x4 in half instead of a dado, adjusting for the difference between the blade and the width of the hog wire. This allows you to Staple the hog wire to one side, then put on the other. In my case I had a top rail to cover it.

It is actually possible to train your dogs to do their business in a specific place and time. I had a blind friend who's dog was also trained to pee and poo by command. Only requirement is to keep your designated place clean, like you would do with a cat litter. Adult dogs usually do their business 2 times a day. So with little patience it shouldn't be a problem to keep your dogs yard and your shoe soles clean and odor free 😊 🤗

Just on a maintance note
You might think about cutting the grass and dog digging...
Maybe put concrete, 12 inch wide or more 4 inch thick or deeper so you won't have problems maintaining the grass under the fence
Thanks for the reply jim! Thats a great idea. Im fortunate to have dogs that havent picked up digging as entertainment, and hope they stay that way. As far as the grass goes, i just hold the weed eater out as im riding past on the mower. It was tricky the first couple of times but im pretty efficient at it now.
Can you use a roll of weld wire instead of panels and get the same result
That is a very good question. I think that would work with my design, but from my experience, the roll wire isn't as rigid by itself the way the utility panel is and could result in construction complications because of its flimsy nature. You could save a few steps of my design, but still make a frame without the dado and hammer staple the wire to the frame and the post much like you would barbed wire. Im not sure how sturdy the end result of that would be, but i guess that depends on what exactly your trying to keep in, or out of the fenced area.
Excellent video, your fence looks great. I would add some kind of drain holes to the bottom board holding the wire, to insure water doesn't sit in the dado cut after it rains. Or caulk it with clear or matching color f you paint the fence.
I really like those gate latches also, great idea.

Came for the fence, planning on doing similar bit with 3x3 steel post 12' long, 4'x16' goat and sheep psnels 2 high. For an 8' tall fence to keep our hound on 4 acres of ground. Just wish i had bought the panels a couple years ago before they jumped in price.
