I agree with Sal from Comic Pop: Frank Miller might not be at his literary peak anymore, but he would make an excellent editor at DC. He’s an ideas man. He works well with other writers and artists. And his love and understanding of the characters would make him an excellent creative team leader.

AFTER MUCH CONSIDERATION I'VE TAKEN THIS IDEA A STEP FURTHER. I THINK TOM KING ALSO WROTE HIMSELF INTO THIS STORY AS CATWOMAN.
WHAT'S THE BIGGEST POWER PLAY HERE?
TO WRITE HIMSELF INTO THE ROLE OF A POPULAR SUPERHERO IN ORDER TO WRESTLE WITH SOME PERSONAL ISSUES, OR TO EXPLORE HIS FEMININE SIDE & WRITE HIMSELF INTO THE ROLE OF A POPULAR SUPERHERO'S LOVE INTEREST IN WHICH HIS FEMININE SIDE BECOMES THE STAR & IS ABLE TO THEN, BY BECOMING THAT SUPERHERO'S MAIN FOCUS & OBJECT OF DESIRE, COMPLETELY DISMANTLE, DECONSTRUCT & ULTIMATELY DESTROY THAT SUPERHERO.... ONLY TO SAVE HIM IN THE END.

@@adamlee4831 That's the thing, I find Superman way more relatable than Batman. His struggles are way more mundane. He feels lonely because he's different, his coworkers don't respect him, the love of his life can't see through his exterior (at the start), he has to figure out how to raise a son (currently), and the list goes on. I love Batman, but his struggles are just way too over the top with the whole "parents murdered in the back of an alley" and "city completely corrupted by crime".

Frank Miller, despite All Star and TDKSA, still understands Batman better than most.
Looking at I am Gotham I thought King understood Batman well enough. But as his run went on....
His Batman went from inspiring kids to take on fear and be their own heroes (like Gotham), to slapping Tim Drake over bringing up his ex, alienating his family, being depressed and broken over being Batman and spending dozens of issues crying over a failed wedding in his nightmares.
    What happened?

Yeah... No one really knows what happened there, & iGuess no one ever WILL know either. Any plans that Tom may have had about providing any sort of definitive explanation for The SoyBat in the final 30-ish issues of this Epic Tale have all been scrapped.
...and after all tbe big talk about fundamentally altering the character, possibly forever, that they were letting him put out there, too.

      @rcbmmines4579 Před 4 lety +14

TheDarkTicoKnight12 Oh he does. More than most. At least maybe he did once. Definitely with TDKR and as someone who just reread and rewatched the book and animated adaptation recently, and first experienced them not ten years ago, they definitely aged well.
Remember the context. This is a Batman at a dark stage of his life. Perhaps the darkest. Decades of pain and suffering and one decade of watching the world fall. Even then though he doesn’t kill (despite what Zack Snyder thinks). He still has some compassion and honor. He still does his best to set an example for the Sons of Batman. He is still Batman. A weary, old and nearly broken Batman whose consumed by the Bat side, but Batman nonetheless. It’s clear however that Miller never meant this to be how Batman should be normally. It’s a dark dystopian alternate future after all.
Read Year One (which he made after TDKR) or watch he animated adaptation. There he established the fundamentals of modern Batman. One who was a hero who saved the lives of others, especially children, just as much as he would beat up criminals.
I remember an interview/essay where Frank said Batman was not all about vengeance. He was bigger than that. He was also about making sure no other child bears the pain he did. It’s why he took in Dick. In that sense, he understood Bruce Wayne more than a lot of people. That’s an idea the best Batman writers and fans would agree with. Morrison, Snyder, Dini, O’Neil etc.
Too bad he seems to have forgotten all of those in his later work. TDKSA and All Star are the books that didn’t age well, but really they were never good in the first place and really contradicted his older stuff in a way.

Except for his planet being destroyed and wanting to use his great power to lift up his fellow man while being inherently apart from them and pretending to be less than he is in his civilian life to be accepted/ not incur jealousy of what he is from the people he wants to be there for. Yeah, there's nothing in the foundation of the character for a clever writer to work with (rolls eyes). The worst part is, all his characters "speak" that way. They don't have a mind of their own, they are just as over-expressive as King himself wishes they could be.

Also finding out you are not what you thought you were and that all those who are like you are gone can also be traumatic. Now tie that with being bullied, being unable to talk to anyone about what you’re going through, your adoptive father, your hero dying when you had or think you had the power to save him. All that tied together and you have more then minimal trauma, hell you such potential that makes an interesting character.

That’s why Superman is Earths champion he lost one world that he never got the chance to experience that’s why he loves Earth so much and wants to protect it.

There are some pretty good digs in there from Frank, but yeah, I don't see these two mixing it up "after school" anytime soon.
Still, watch Tom's body language when Frank is really ribbing on him. I was able to make an entire gif out of his angst.
...also, just for fun, if you do end up going through the footage again to see what I'm talking about, try to find the one frame where Tom looks like he's literally sniffing Frank's fingers!

I’ll be the one to say it I love Tom King and his books sure he did Hero’s in Crisis but Frank did Dark Knight 2. I like Tom kings work; he’s good at making stories. He’s got a lot to learn he’s new a writing compared to most these big wig all star writers. It’s easy to tear people apart and focus on the bad in stories but it’s harder to look at the good and give recognition for the good.

Both Frank and Tom screwed up Batman at some point in their career, but Frank has written material that changed the course of comics history and pop culture. Tom just turned out to be a puppet for DC to write stories for radical feminists and the LGBTQ+ community. I liked his earlier works like Sheriff of Babylon, but ever since getting on DC's Batman/Catwoman story arc, it began to tank fast thanks to DC telling him what to do.
