I also felt like Watchmen worked best as its own self-contained story, but much like the original Star Wars trilogy, I don’t mind other twists or extensions on the mythos as long as they land. Even when they don’t, the original material is always there.
I’m pulling for Tom King to shock us all one day with a maxi series that has a happy end-conclusion.

I’m so happy to hear you went against your oath and experienced the continuation of this universe. Because ultimately the movie is great. That HBO series is amazing. And I’m not sure if you’ve read Darwin Cooke’s “Before Watchmen: Minutemen” but you should as it’s an all time classic. It respectably lives up to the quality of original graphic novel. Very worth of the name Watchmen.

I think I'll pick it up. I enjoy Tom King's work (although I haven't read his Batman or Heroes in Crisis yet) and I'm a huge fan of gritty street level crime/detective stories. I wish they didn't use Watchmen characters so I have some reservations about picking it up. I wish that instead of using Watchmen characters they could use some of the original characters they were based on. In the case of Rorschach it would be the Question. I liked Lemire's take on the Question and of course I love the Denny O'Neal comic from the 80s. I just wish there were more Question comics out there. From what I could tell from your preview it looks like something I'll like so I'm going to pick it up. How would you compare King's Strange Tales to Rorschach? Better? Worse? Indifferent? This enquiring mind would like to know! Thanks as always for your content!

It's a good book, the story is pretty solid and the characters are dynamic and interesting, good dialogue, the plot gets pretty thick so you really have to pay attention to the details in it. The HBO series takes place 30 yrs after the original watchmen. I very much enjoyed the series, that reminds me more of a continuation rather than a sequel. Well made,by fans of the original series. I did get a kick more out of Lovecraft Country, it was more straight forward in pace and plot as to the series was more character development and interaction, in which I admired. It's just you have to sit there and pay 100% attention, because of its heavy character development/interaction. Did you enjoy the R series by brain and lee? Where does that fit in? As well as Before watchmen?

The Silk Spectre was probably the best out of the other stories, cause it was very well contained. The before watchmen omnibus is frustrating purely on the lay out choice. It's printed in the order the issues were released in, so you go from like an issue of rorschach right into an issue of Dr Manhattan that has nothing to do with the last story you read, it's pretty jarring.

Lot to say here. First off it is an absolute shame what happened to Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons in DCs dealings with them and Watchmen. I know people will just leave it plainly as well they signed the contract and that's their fault. Grant Morrison said something like you cannot expect corporations to behave like anything other than corporations. Their main goal is to pad their bottom line. The people in charge may be nice and friendly and cool to hang out with but don't get it twisted they're not your friends. They serve the corporation. Lawyer up. Protect yourself. I mean the incidents with Siegel and Shuster getting Superman taken from them, Jack Kirby getting screwed over with Marvel, Bill Finger getting cheated out of credit with Batman, etc etc. The history was all there. They were being really naive. But having said all that it is still wrong and I feel for them because they are human beings that wanted to do what they love and share it with the world. Now on to WB/DC using the Watchmen world. That doesn't get me all that upset. I take it on a case to case basis. I really really do not want them to overuse the world as it will over dilute the importance of them and the original story. Lot of credit to longtime DC publisher Paul Levitz who honored his word to Alan Moore to never publish a Watchmen sequel or spinoff. The Snyder movie still happened and Moore acknowledged that was WB doing and out of Levitz's control. Levitz was aware that Dan Didio had the Before Watchmen stuff lined up and really wanted to do it. Levitz suppressed it until he stepped down. Didio and DC went ahead with the Before Watchmen series. Now to the case by case basis. The Zack Snyder movie. Eh. It's alright. Very ambitious. Tried to keep a faithful adaptation to the source material but ultimatey he was adding his own flair of fetish style slow motion and making the violence over the top. It's really as good as it's gonna get as far as a faithful adaptation of the original series from Hollywood. I actually really did like the change to Ozymandias' plan. That was a lot cooler and worked better for the universe. Even Gibbons said as much. The Before Watchmen series'. Ugggh. The stories were very basic that could have been told with other DC characters. They tried filling in gaps that didn't need filling in. It was just a lazy cash grab. The art was phenomenal though. They brought the best in and they did a tremendous job with the mediocre scripts they were given. The only one that was actually pretty good was Darywn Cooke's written and drawn Minutemen series. I think the next use of Watchmen by DC was Doomsday Clock. That's a really tricky one. I haven't read it but it looks awesome. The reviews on amazon are universal. It's a classic. It has around 1500 reviews averaging close to 4.5 stars. Yeah it's good. It seemed kinda of surface level when it was announced. That it would be almost like an apology for the New 52. It would pick up on Dr. Manhattan's last line in the original series about wanting to create new life. Kinda a hint that he created the New 52 universe. Whoa. I think it evolves into something much more. I can't wait for a deluxe edition to that as that is the only way I collect comics. This series I cannot wait for a deluxe edition as well. Tom King is an amazing writer and I think he is worthy of taking on the Watchmen universe. Can't wait to read it. I don't know if this mixes the Watchmen universe with the main DC universe but I hope that is a well DC rarely goes to if at all going forward. The HBO TV show is amazing. It really surprised me and is in the spirit of the original comic series and tells an awesome sequel to to the original. I know I said a mouthful as this is an extraordinarily complex issue. Thanks for the overview Omar! Take care and peace!

    Kinda off topic But :
What I don’t get is the (I think) recent phenomenon of Marvel
Making the front hard cover (not the dust jacket cover) of some Omnibus
The alternate cover to what’s on the dust jacket cover.
Examples: Cloak and Dagger Volume Two, X-Men Inferno Prologue.
    Why??
If I’m picking a specific dust jacket I want the front hard cover to be the SAME as that on the
Dust jacket (or alternatively a solid color or a Logo cover ).
If you put the same cover on the front hard cover as the dust jacket
I wouldn’t mind the alternate cover being the BACK hard cover -
But NOT the front hardcover !
Obviously I’m not going to buy two of each volume just so I can have the same dust jacket cover
AND the same front hard cover - That should be the way it comes in the first place !
I can’t be the only collector who thinks this , Yes? ✌️🤷‍♂️

Chose Strange Adventures over this, I've heard....eh things, tbh.
But, for those who liked it, I'd love to hear other takes on it. 😌
[technically, Strange Adventures is going to be my final-trial on whether or not I keep following King's writing.
Been reading his stuff from Vision, to Mr Miracle, to his Batman Rebirth run and Heroes in Crisis,
and kind of noticed recurring characterizations that kind of take me out of the books, as well as similar story beats that kind of made it easier to predict.
Hopefully S.A. wows me though, since I originally liked Mr Miracle and Vision, and even parts of Batman Rebirth were fun.
But...those issues that don't hit highs, even among those iconic runs..
..they've kind of built into me wondering why I'm spending my money on it. 😅
Though maybe this is just my first time falling out of love with a writer. 😏
