@@christinedge7627 I have that too! It sucks, because I would love to be the center of attention, and when I excel at something and know for sure I am better than someone is at something, I do exactly that. The ADHD says get the hell out there, but the ASD keeps me sitting down. 🙃
I am fully diagnosed ADHD and sometimes it literally takes me days to clean my room. I have to do sections and areas one at a time otherwise I will get overwhelmed and I won't do a thing. People don't understand how hard that can and people never understand why I'm so proud of myself whenever I actually get it done. Thank you for making this type of relatable content ❤️❤️
I start on one task that leads to another and another and so on. After a while, I'll stop, look around, and everything is only half done. Two hours later everything comes together and I've cleaned the whole house. One task at a time isn't stimulating enough for me, I tend to make it doubly difficult until it comes together, then I'm super proud of myself. 😊
something i do to get my work done on time is tell someone how much work i have to do today, give them enough details so they know what exactly im doing, and ask them to give me an estimate of how long they personally think i’ll take to do all those tasks. then i make it a competition to get it done before that time as a spite thing. it really works, highly recommend it if you have friends 👍

First I was like "oh no another one to tell you that you do things more when you tell others".. because when I share my goals with others and then don't meet them I feel additionally terrible. @@maliniatb so trueee i feel like im less likely to get things done if i tell other people lol but when i make it a competition like this it really works wonders. another thing thats been working for me lately is pretending like im a hero of some kind that needs to save the kingdom from a fire breathing dragon. the dragon is the tasks that must be complete, and my blade is my productivity. it sounds a bit silly, but one of my friends started being like “TRAVELLER!!! FOR THE SAKE OF THE KINGDOM, YOU MUST COMPLETE YOUR TRAINING (MATH HOMEWORK) SO YOU CAN SAVE THEM ALL FROM THE EVIL DRAGON!!!!!” its fun, and so now if im having a hard time convincing myself to like. get out of bed, or start on a task, or something, i’ll yell in my head “FOR THE KINGDOM!!!!!!!” and it somehow just works?????? recommend trying that out if you think it might work for you!! and it doesnt hurt to try lol

What you said it's true..I can't feel motivated to study at home but when i'm in class or Library when everyone is doing their thing and seeing how productive i am (Actually trying🙂)I feel like i can study all day long without any disturbance.. And recently discoverd that A Good Song Playlist really help me to stay attentive and CZcams ADHD musics help me to stay out of any talks in mind..Now i rarely feel the tense
I have hope that there will be more and more of this now that kids are diagnosed early instead of being labeled as bad/lazy/stupid. That's a self-fulfilling prophecy that far too many neurodivergent people have experienced.
Most psychiatrists are aspergers or Neuro divergent or personally struggled with limitations that's why they became psychiatrists because they themselves have personally been thru the struggle and know what it's like!! They have learned to grow and go beyond their limitations and have learned from their limitations. So now it's their passion to help other's who struggle with the same things. Whatever your struggle is, there is your Purpose!! Your Purpose is obviously to help other's who struggle with the same things you have struggled with,!! Deep down in your Gut, you know this!!
Same😂 I'm neurotypical, but I can relate too much to autism and ADHD stuff. But what I don't relate to at all is hypersensitivity. If anything, I'm hypOsensitive. It's like my filter is too strong. Learning how to drive at least taught me to pay attention to my surroundings.
@@solar0windHyposensitivity could also be a sign of neurodivergence I have ADHD & autism and my mom used to say that if I was reading a book and the house caught fire, I would burn down with it. Also I don’t really feel pain, hunger, or tiredness to a certain extent. Not saying you are neurodivergent but if hypersensitivity is like the only thing you don’t related to it might be something to look into.
@@solar0windhyposensitivity is also a sign of adhd - adhd is a neurodevelopmental disorder and it has many effects that not everyone has, including opposite effects. An ADHD brain doesn’t get enough stimulation internally so typically it will look for that stimulation elsewhere. That can appear to be hyperactivity where you’re chasing dopamine and jumping from thought to thought, or it can look like not paying attention to anything because something else is giving you the stimulation your brain is craving so nothing else is important to your brain. Not saying you are ADHD, as many symptoms of ADHD are essentially extremely exaggerated versions of things neurotypical people also struggle with. However if you are related a lot to adhd experiences, it might behoove you to even just do a couple informal tests from relatively informed sources just to see. Diagnosis, even informal, can help us reframe our lives so we can prioritizes structures and coping mechanisms we’ll need before it becomes urgent or critical that they be well developed, so there is less chance of falling when that situation does arise
@a_bit... I love taking paperwork/homework/thought-work like that out to other locations as well! It's like a treat to not have other household tasks trying to claim my time, and sometimes I arrive early for a get together with a friend so I get a reward at the end of it! on beautiful days, usually the spring and the fall, I love to put a 2 x 4' folding table in the back of my minivan, and have my husband take out at least one of the middle row of seats. That way I have a perfect place to sit on the floor of the car, with a towel or a cushion, and a great surface to spread out on. There's a nice park not too far from home where I can have a lovely view over a long distance as I read and write and think, or work on my phone. Anytime I have the urge and the time while I'm out doing errands, I can take advantage of beautiful weather like that. Catch a little vitamin D on top of it all.
Ok, that second adhd tip WORKS. It doesn't even have to be for chores, when doing schoolwork I say to myself "get a section of questions done in a single song". AND I LOVE IT.
I live this idea, I've done versions of this but like yeah the competition works so well! My kiddo and i are terrible with the bedtime routine, we both get distracted. But if i give them take one at a time and then a check in, they stay on task while i have a task to finish before they are ready for bed like making next day lunch or emptying dishwasher. It works so well for us! We also do a timer clean up, 10 mins, or finish before the song. Gonna def make a task for each song! Maybe I'll use this for the teens i volunteer with who are terrible at cleaning up after themselves... We could make clean up crew like a dance party!
@@mxchigurl_xyeah, music with lyrics is no problem cuz it's a separate part of my brain singing while doing lesson plans and i can always stop singing. But for accomplishing chores, working on crafts, projects, cleaning, gardening etc i need my fav CZcamsrs long videos that i don't have to watch ... Livestream for trials or court documents and tea is my current hyperfixation!
Music is also really helpful for staying realistic about time! I didn't really realize it takes *forty-five minutes* even to make a very simple dinner until I ran Vivaldi's Four Seasons at the same time. But if I know how long it *should* take, then I can tell how far into the music I should be, or at least how many songs roughly it should take (can't be convinced to always listen to the same thing).
I just put the same songs with heavy dopamine inducing drops on max volume so I start doing things while dancing around and it's been quite helpful. I'm also a beatboxer so I can also provide myself with my own music if I don't have headphones available (even tho others hate me for that). The hardest thing is actually getting started but I set free time timers (the more boring the task is, the longer the timer gets so that I ensure I will forget that I set it when it goes off. Usually not more than 20-30 minutes before getting to do what I have to do and I set an absolute rule with myself that when it rings I will drop whatever I'm doing, even if I'm in the middle of a video or halfway through the recording of a voicemail). It helps me to snap out of doom scrolling sessions and stuff like that. Sometimes I can't even get myself to set the timer (as of now despite hating myself for not doing it) and that just can't be helped
The pressure thing is so real!!!! If I need to finish a project and I can’t seem to do it I go to a coffe shop, not a Starbucks or any of that, one where I know I can be with by caffe and laptop for a normal amount of time, not all day. Son the preppie arround and the pressure of needing to finish in less than 1 hour makes me work extremely quickly and efficiently 😂
Alternative for getting tasks done wait until a loved one is almost home and tell yourself you’re going to surprise them by the house being clean. Gets me every time.
YES. But then on the flip side, i clean frantically without any break, and without any order (starting with dishes, taking out trash, cleaning up laundry, then back to dishes) and end up really overwhelmed and tired lol@@carrieboekweg1987

I hate competition and I lose all my abilities when people are watching me, so me pretending people are watching me and judging me on my productivity, or lack thereof, would put me in deep procrastination mode.
I'm absolutely using the song method next time I clean my apartment - I listen to music anyway but using it as a productivity tool might be a game-changer as someone who jumps from task to task with no organization or order whatsoever
I call that "but first" syndrome, and I have a severe case of it! So I'm going to do the dishes, but first I need to go around the house and collect them to make sure I don't miss any, but first I need to start a load of laundry so that can be running while I do the dishes, but first I need to take a shower so I won't be without a towel to dry off with, but first... you get the point. I take the time to make a list of the things I need to do, then put them in order according to what makes sense to my ADHD brain. Then I can set a timer (be it an actual timer, a song, a CZcams video, etc) and play beat the clock. Keeps me focused on what I need to do and reminds me of where to go next without having to try to figure it out in the process. My Mom used to tell me she could get 3 things done in the time it took me to make out my list. My response was always that was great for her, but if I didn't take the time to make my list, I wasn't going to even get the second thing done! (The first thing being making my list!)
I have recently come to embrace jumping from one task to another as I declutter and clean. Helps me stay focused to get them done. So hard for me to stay on one task for so long.

Yeah this has more to do with how your ego operates than with ADHD. I have really debilitating ADHD and have been building coping mechanisms over many years. None look like what she just described. I hope this doesn't confuse people when they don't recognise themselves in it.

THANK YOU! I have severe ADHD and the non-adhd advices apply to me more than the “ADHD” ones. This video portrays ADHD in a very black and white manner, and simplified a very complex disability (as all disabilities are). Consequently, videos like these lead to impressionable people self diagnosing since it comes off as being “relatable.” It also leads to people not taking our disability seriously.
It's a shame that we still have a large percentage of the population that believes adhd just doesn't exist and is a giant conspiracy made up to sell meth to kids. You probably would have gotten help decades sooner and we'd have a more ADHD friendly society.
i haven’t been diagnosed with adhd but i can never keep my house clean because i just find it as a such a difficult task and as someone who is quite competitive making a chore into a game seems like a great idea
I mean there are a lot of people who have never been taught how to clean properly so they can get very overwhelmed very fast. I would always recommend a full screening although it can be expensive and it can take 4 months or more to get into dependent on your healthcare. Even if you don't have ADHD there may be tools that you get taught that will help you in life like the one you see here

Great advice for most, but not all ADHD looks or is the same. Some of us are pretty introverted & imagining that everyone in a public place is watching to see if you're being productive is enough nightmare fuel for me to shut me down totally & take days to recover from the mere thought of, but we all eventually find what works for our personal brand of ADHD- -that hype up playlist task race is GREAT (as long as you remember to actually stop before it's 3am & you unknowingly race yourself into not sleeping for a day or two 😁)
I like being in the office with people working in a low background way, who I can annoyingly interrupt when I have a question or want to talk!! But definite NO to loud noises or random ones, they are too loud and people having meetings or phone calls nearby is a nightmare. I can't tune it out and not listen and can't get into my work! God! Imagine people are watching you! Horrible, anxiety and stress not good.
For me I don't go in public but I do it with friends or family instead (tho I haven't been diagnosed with adhd but my friend who's diagnosed is pretty sure I have it, and I am too)
I could only do that if I had music blasting through my earbuds. Excessive noise and crowds are so overwhelming that the non ADHD advice fits me better honestly.
When no one is watching I space out and get distracted, but when I'm around anyone I cant focus because of all the noise (even just the sound of them quietly turning their own pages or typing), and the "pretend theyre watching" would leave me w what i call perfectionist paralysis ✨✨ Send help
Oh yes! 40-plus years on my mum commented on how I always had the radio on whilst I was doing my homework. She said she didn't know how I did it... but it worked. If I hear Lazy Sunday by The Small Faces the theme tune to Annie Nightingale’s Sunday afternoon Radio One show I'm right back in the 70s with my geography and French homework. 🙂
I like a place with a low hum of activity - other people typing, my headphones in one ear in a not busy cafe. But then, I also sometimes only want one sock on one particular foot 😅

I also know the noise and don't have a random shot of anxiety when a random noise comes up because there are no random noises in my music because I know my music.
I've actually got a playlist for showering so I get out in time to get ready for work. Each song is a step - getting in, shampoo, etc. I used to be notorious for taking hour long showers. Now they're always around 15 minutes, if not under. It's such a good hecking system and I've started extending it into other tasks bdnsnxjsis

I like to listen to podcast while I clean. I realized the biggest hurdle when it comes to those tasks was boredom, so having a plot-driven episode to listen to keeps me motivated. Mind busy + hands busy= happy adhd
I try not to let myself listen to music unless I'm doing something productive. That way, I'll keep being productive because I wanna keep listening to music. It works for me.
For me that's podcasts. They're not stimulating enough to keep my interest on their own, but doing chores or work gives me just enough focus to actually keep listening. The other way around, the podcasts are just stimulating enough to keep me on my chores or work, but not too much to distract me from them. I need podcasts to work and need to work to listen to my podcasts. Win-win!
I love the song advice - specifically because it can force me to think realistically about how long a task is and match it to the song. Also, I can flip back and forth between choosing whether I want to organize my day by which tasks I want to accomplish or by what songs I feel like listening to (not always in the mood for one so I can default to the other). Either way, I’m forcing myself to fact-check and monitor my emotional/energy levels, and stay in control of what I want to do with that information. Constant feedback loops are my neurodivergent jam!
i like to listen to themed playlists with gifs on them so i have a “timer,” background noise, and visual stimulation. Often times, it keeps me from getting distracted and doesn’t leave room for intrusive thoughts! unfortunately other times it can be overstimulating.
This probably sounds crazy (or sad) but when I was little I used to pretend there was another person doing the dishes and I was trying to beat them to get them done
I always have to play mind games with myself to get things done!!!! It's, it makes me feel like I'm crazy and sad. Learning more, watching these videos, etc... is helping so much, though!!!!
I actually find trying to clean everything as you make the mess is much more manageable as it prevents things from becoming too overwhelming, it makes the task significantly less draining overall, or else I’ll just push it off indefinitely. I also find sharing a task load is incredibly helpful, it feels like you’ve done 4x less than what you did for me when I have someone else helping and talking to
For me cleaning as I go feels like it's a neverending job. If I clean things before I go to bed, it feels like it's a task with clear boundaries and is actually doable. This is why I love it when people share their ways of dealing with things! It's much easier to find a good method for myself if I can see all the different ways people have.
Sometimes listening to one song on repeat does it for me. XD I always have to much energy and walk/dance around, sometimes for hours cause I don't realize.. . After I realized I could use that to my advantage and just clean my way though my apartment. I'm unstoppable now xD
I'm a teacher, and in my country there are many ADHD kids whose parents don't accept their diagnose, therefore they have little to no help. I try to help as I can and the first example was me just yesterday, I have to admit. I'll definitely suggest my students use these strategies and see what happens
The song thing is genius. And you just explained why I always studied better in the library where I felt like I was in competition with everybody else who was studying.
I do the song thing for study (diferent song/Playlist for each subject, and try to do us much us I can in one song) and to force myself to read books (find song that I like and that suits the book atmosphere and listen to that song every time I read the book, moreover I had to read the book every time I wanted to listen to that song ,so every time I wanted to hear the song, I also made myself reading) And that works much better than, turn aside all the stuff and just do it (like my parents always forced me to do, and I know I'm not alone in this) and fill yourself with guilt that you can't do such a simple thing. Like, all that I had read in my teenage years was one book that I get hyperfixated on , and even that book I couldn't finish.. but now when I figured out that tactic I finally finished one book in just 3 weeks and now reading the second book . Just think about how much shame it could prevent just from acknowledging the difference between adhd brain and nerotipical brain. And yes I diagnosed with adhd just few months ago, and that really make a difference.

There is this site where you can join a giant zoom call with all kinds of students worldwide and then you put your camera on (it’s automatically muted for everyone) and go to work. It helps me when I’m studying at home alone and feeling unmotivated. I forgot what it’s called though lol

professionally diagnosed here, caffeine can be a decent test (though a few folks with adhd respond better with depressants). i hated the taste of coffee but loved caffeinated soda and thought that the caffeine was 'waking me up' a tiny bit, until i found out i'd been chugging Dr. Pepper with NO idea that it was caffeinated, and felt nothing. That broke the illusion and I've since realized I can drink entire energy drinks and take a nap, all it does is help me lock onto tasks rather than struggling to focus because it's a stimulant similar (but much weaker) than most ADHD meds. I wasn't diagnosed until I was given test meds, and instead of euphoria, I had a complete fucking revelation where all the blurry static that I hadn't even realized was happening in my brain at all FOCUSED into one channeled train of thought. I could literally choose to tune in to my math teacher talking if I wanted to, and it wasn't like trying to push a boulder up a mountain. It was INSANE. I hadn't even realized that my attention had been controlling me and not the other way around until I tried that tiny dose of ritalin (though I'm pretty small & underweight so meds hit me hard) and discovered that it was actually possible to 'tune in' on purpose and that literally everybody could do that. That's why I heard 'just focus' or 'you need to listen better' but I'd never understood it until then. The neurobiology of ADHD is pretty fascinating and it's been a while since I did a deep dive, but iirc the communication between and levels of dopamine and serotonin are not only lower than most but there's an observable difference in sections of the brain related to executive function, and those stimulants (usually) boost your chemicals enough to be able to sustain the focus that your brain usually can't hold onto. A few of my good friends with unmedicated ADHD are absolutely overloaded on caffeine all the time and you wouldn't know it, and in my experience it's really hard to ever get caffeine jitters (still not sure if I ever really experienced it or just placebo-ed myself into thinking it) because you're not at the starting level a neurotypical is when they consume it, and it effects you a lot differently.
that can be caffeine tolerance. if you abstain from caffeine until it's completely out of the system and withdrawals is over, AND THEN you reintroduce it, I am sure it will feel jittery/wired and noticable.@@someguy34231
A lot of people put unfair stigma on self-diagnosis. The problem with self-diagnosis is when people stop with just that and think it's 100% reliable and never needs anything else. But *any* issue you bring up with a doctor begins with self-diagnosis. If you fell and injured your leg and told the doctor, "I think I broke my leg," it would be pretty unreasonable for the doctor or anyone else to criticize your analysis. They shouldn't say, "well, that's just a self-diagosis, it doesn't mean anything. Your shin could be bent at a 45° angle for completely normal reasons. And maybe the bone is sticking out like that because you're imagining it so hard we _both_ see it. Maybe you're just lazy and want to avoid standing, so you're making up this whole _broken leg_ issue. Just get through it with _willpower_ and you'll be fine." They'd be looked at like a crazy person if they treated a broken leg like that. But broken mental processes? If your ability to concentrate or filter out overwhelming sensory information or process impulses or manage mood or even just exert willpower in general were broken, they feel perfectly justified in unloading all the criticism in the world on a person who deigns to try understanding their problem enough to realize they have a problem, and then take those suspicions to a professional. Only *you* can know, for sure, if the mental processes happening in your own head are facilitating or impeding your ability to live your life the way you want to. And when you go to a professional, it's not to get "permission" to have a disorder; it's to identify what the problem could be. If you have something in mind, they can either verify and validate that _yes,_ you were on the right track; or _no,_ it may resemble that, but it's *actually* this other thing. And the difference is _this_ issue that you weren't taking into consideration because it didn't even occur to you that it was atypical. *Many* people deal with atypical mental processes, or lack thereof, that they _aren't even aware of;_ incorrectly believing that their personal, inner experience is universal. For a *long* time, I believed many things I was dealing with were just things that _everyone_ deals with and wondered, "how is it that other people can get the results they do while dealing with all this?" I wondered "how can people make the decisions they do in spite of their minds screaming at them not to?" Or "how can people _not_ do things in spite of their minds constantly screaming at them to do it?" And my fundamental misconception was in presuming that their minds were _actually_ screaming these things at them in the first place.

I have to say genuinely thank you for making video’s, your tips for dealing with my ADHD come in handy way more than any therapy has ever and it feels like someone actually understands how it is to live with it and it be one more thing on my list of many struggles I deal with everyday.
One I heard: "Don't take off your shoes when you get home because if you do you'll lose your motivation to do the dishes." I can't explain why, but it works.
The first one! This was literally me in undergrad every time I went to the library before my diagnosis. I never sat in the private rooms unless I was taking an exam bc I wouldn't have that competition. It actually helped me so much!!

Okay the task music one is 50/50 bc adhd is commonly linked with anxiety and anger issues. So if u dont get the task done in time u may feel useless or like ur not good enough (atleast thats what happens to me), so u should test it out and think how u would react if u didnt finish it in time b4 doing it!

I start on one task that leads to another and another and so on. After a while, I'll stop, look around, and everything is only half done. Two hours later everything comes together and I've cleaned the whole house. One task at a time isn't stimulating enough for me, I tend to make it doubly difficult until it comes together, then I'm super proud of myself. 😊

something i do to get my work done on time is tell someone how much work i have to do today, give them enough details so they know what exactly im doing, and ask them to give me an estimate of how long they personally think i’ll take to do all those tasks. then i make it a competition to get it done before that time as a spite thing. it really works, highly recommend it if you have friends 👍

@@maliniatb so trueee i feel like im less likely to get things done if i tell other people lol but when i make it a competition like this it really works wonders. another thing thats been working for me lately is pretending like im a hero of some kind that needs to save the kingdom from a fire breathing dragon. the dragon is the tasks that must be complete, and my blade is my productivity. it sounds a bit silly, but one of my friends started being like “TRAVELLER!!! FOR THE SAKE OF THE KINGDOM, YOU MUST COMPLETE YOUR TRAINING (MATH HOMEWORK) SO YOU CAN SAVE THEM ALL FROM THE EVIL DRAGON!!!!!” its fun, and so now if im having a hard time convincing myself to like. get out of bed, or start on a task, or something, i’ll yell in my head “FOR THE KINGDOM!!!!!!!” and it somehow just works?????? recommend trying that out if you think it might work for you!! and it doesnt hurt to try lol

I had my first therapy appointment yeterday and the guy was awsome! He had adhd and completely understood everything I was trying to say!
Most psychiatrists are aspergers or Neuro divergent or personally struggled with limitations that's why they became psychiatrists because they themselves have personally been thru the struggle and know what it's like!! They have learned to grow and go beyond their limitations and have learned from their limitations. So now it's their passion to help other's who struggle with the same things. Whatever your struggle is, there is your Purpose!! Your Purpose is obviously to help other's who struggle with the same things you have struggled with,!! Deep down in your Gut, you know this!!

@@solar0windHyposensitivity could also be a sign of neurodivergence I have ADHD & autism and my mom used to say that if I was reading a book and the house caught fire, I would burn down with it. Also I don’t really feel pain, hunger, or tiredness to a certain extent. Not saying you are neurodivergent but if hypersensitivity is like the only thing you don’t related to it might be something to look into.

An ADHD brain doesn’t get enough stimulation internally so typically it will look for that stimulation elsewhere. That can appear to be hyperactivity where you’re chasing dopamine and jumping from thought to thought, or it can look like not paying attention to anything because something else is giving you the stimulation your brain is craving so nothing else is important to your brain. Not saying you are ADHD, as many symptoms of ADHD are essentially extremely exaggerated versions of things neurotypical people also struggle with. However if you are related a lot to adhd experiences, it might behoove you to even just do a couple informal tests from relatively informed sources just to see. Diagnosis, even informal, can help us reframe our lives so we can prioritizes structures and coping mechanisms we’ll need before it becomes urgent or critical that they be well developed, so there is less chance of falling when that situation does arise

@a_bit... I love taking paperwork/homework/thought-work like that out to other locations as well! It's like a treat to not have other household tasks trying to claim my time, and sometimes I arrive early for a get together with a friend so I get a reward at the end of it! on beautiful days, usually the spring and the fall, I love to put a 2 x 4' folding table in the back of my minivan, and have my husband take out at least one of the middle row of seats. That way I have a perfect place to sit on the floor of the car, with a towel or a cushion, and a great surface to spread out on. There's a nice park not too far from home where I can have a lovely view over a long distance as I read and write and think, or work on my phone. Anytime I have the urge and the time while I'm out doing errands, I can take advantage of beautiful weather like that. Catch a little vitamin D on top of it all.

Ok, that second adhd tip WORKS. It doesn't even have to be for chores, when doing schoolwork I say to myself "get a section of questions done in a single song". AND I LOVE IT.
Also most ppl say not to play songs with lyrics when doing homework, but when i write essays it gets boring and my fav songs keep me from going on yt😂
I live this idea, I've done versions of this but like yeah the competition works so well! My kiddo and i are terrible with the bedtime routine, we both get distracted. But if i give them take one at a time and then a check in, they stay on task while i have a task to finish before they are ready for bed like making next day lunch or emptying dishwasher. It works so well for us! We also do a timer clean up, 10 mins, or finish before the song. Gonna def make a task for each song! Maybe I'll use this for the teens i volunteer with who are terrible at cleaning up after themselves... We could make clean up crew like a dance party!

But for accomplishing chores, working on crafts, projects, cleaning, gardening etc i need my fav CZcamsrs long videos that i don't have to watch ... Livestream for trials or court documents and tea is my current hyperfixation!
Music is also really helpful for staying realistic about time! I didn't really realize it takes *forty-five minutes* even to make a very simple dinner until I ran Vivaldi's Four Seasons at the same time. But if I know how long it *should* take, then I can tell how far into the music I should be, or at least how many songs roughly it should take (can't be convinced to always listen to the same thing).
I just put the same songs with heavy dopamine inducing drops on max volume so I start doing things while dancing around and it's been quite helpful. I'm also a beatboxer so I can also provide myself with my own music if I don't have headphones available (even tho others hate me for that). The hardest thing is actually getting started but I set free time timers (the more boring the task is, the longer the timer gets so that I ensure I will forget that I set it when it goes off. Usually not more than 20-30 minutes before getting to do what I have to do and I set an absolute rule with myself that when it rings I will drop whatever I'm doing, even if I'm in the middle of a video or halfway through the recording of a voicemail). It helps me to snap out of doom scrolling sessions and stuff like that. Sometimes I can't even get myself to set the timer (as of now despite hating myself for not doing it) and that just can't be helped
The crazy thing is I already do the song thing for when I shower but I never thought about applying it to anything else thanks this helps so much

The pressure thing is so real!!!! If I need to finish a project and I can’t seem to do it I go to a coffe shop, not a Starbucks or any of that, one where I know I can be with by caffe and laptop for a normal amount of time, not all day. Son the preppie arround and the pressure of needing to finish in less than 1 hour makes me work extremely quickly and efficiently 😂

I'm absolutely using the song method next time I clean my apartment - I listen to music anyway but using it as a productivity tool might be a game-changer as someone who jumps from task to task with no organization or order whatsoever

I call that "but first" syndrome, and I have a severe case of it! So I'm going to do the dishes, but first I need to go around the house and collect them to make sure I don't miss any, but first I need to start a load of laundry so that can be running while I do the dishes, but first I need to take a shower so I won't be without a towel to dry off with, but first... you get the point. I take the time to make a list of the things I need to do, then put them in order according to what makes sense to my ADHD brain. Then I can set a timer (be it an actual timer, a song, a CZcams video, etc) and play beat the clock. Keeps me focused on what I need to do and reminds me of where to go next without having to try to figure it out in the process. My Mom used to tell me she could get 3 things done in the time it took me to make out my list. My response was always that was great for her, but if I didn't take the time to make my list, I wasn't going to even get the second thing done! (The first thing being making my list!)
I have recently come to embrace jumping from one task to another as I declutter and clean. Helps me stay focused to get them done. So hard for me to stay on one task for so long.

THANK YOU! I have severe ADHD and the non-adhd advices apply to me more than the “ADHD” ones. This video portrays ADHD in a very black and white manner, and simplified a very complex disability (as all disabilities are). Consequently, videos like these lead to impressionable people self diagnosing since it comes off as being “relatable.” It also leads to people not taking our disability seriously.

i haven’t been diagnosed with adhd but i can never keep my house clean because i just find it as a such a difficult task and as someone who is quite competitive making a chore into a game seems like a great idea
I mean there are a lot of people who have never been taught how to clean properly so they can get very overwhelmed very fast.
I would always recommend a full screening although it can be expensive and it can take 4 months or more to get into dependent on your healthcare.
Even if you don't have ADHD there may be tools that you get taught that will help you in life like the one you see here
Some people use roleplay, I tried ans it really helped me to clean, actually. I usually pretend to be like a vintage housewife or smth 😂

Great advice for most, but not all ADHD looks or is the same. Some of us are pretty introverted & imagining that everyone in a public place is watching to see if you're being productive is enough nightmare fuel for me to shut me down totally & take days to recover from the mere thought of, but we all eventually find what works for our personal brand of ADHD- -that hype up playlist task race is GREAT (as long as you remember to actually stop before it's 3am & you unknowingly race yourself into not sleeping for a day or two 😁)

Oh yes! 40-plus years on my mum commented on how I always had the radio on whilst I was doing my homework. She said she didn't know how I did it... but it worked. If I hear Lazy Sunday by The Small Faces the theme tune to Annie Nightingale’s Sunday afternoon Radio One show I'm right back in the 70s with my geography and French homework. 🙂

I've actually got a playlist for showering so I get out in time to get ready for work. Each song is a step - getting in, shampoo, etc. I used to be notorious for taking hour long showers. Now they're always around 15 minutes, if not under. It's such a good hecking system and I've started extending it into other tasks bdnsnxjsis

Pressure, deadlines, challenges and negative consequences are the only things that motivate us.
I like to listen to podcast while I clean. I realized the biggest hurdle when it comes to those tasks was boredom, so having a plot-driven episode to listen to keeps me motivated. Mind busy + hands busy= happy adhd

I love the song advice - specifically because it can force me to think realistically about how long a task is and match it to the song. Also, I can flip back and forth between choosing whether I want to organize my day by which tasks I want to accomplish or by what songs I feel like listening to (not always in the mood for one so I can default to the other).
Either way, I’m forcing myself to fact-check and monitor my emotional/energy levels, and stay in control of what I want to do with that information. Constant feedback loops are my neurodivergent jam!

i like to listen to themed playlists with gifs on them so i have a “timer,” background noise, and visual stimulation. Often times, it keeps me from getting distracted and doesn’t leave room for intrusive thoughts!

This probably sounds crazy (or sad) but when I was little I used to pretend there was another person doing the dishes and I was trying to beat them to get them done
I imagine being in a championship speed (insert thing) tournament. I award myself style points for clever "moves".
I always have to play mind games with myself to get things done!!!! It's, it makes me feel like I'm crazy and sad. Learning more, watching these videos, etc... is helping so much, though!!!!

I never took that extra step with pretending that everyone was watching me, but the public setting helped a bit.
I actually find trying to clean everything as you make the mess is much more manageable as it prevents things from becoming too overwhelming, it makes the task significantly less draining overall, or else I’ll just push it off indefinitely. I also find sharing a task load is incredibly helpful, it feels like you’ve done 4x less than what you did for me when I have someone else helping and talking to
For me cleaning as I go feels like it's a neverending job. If I clean things before I go to bed, it feels like it's a task with clear boundaries and is actually doable. This is why I love it when people share their ways of dealing with things! It's much easier to find a good method for myself if I can see all the different ways people have.

Sometimes listening to one song on repeat does it for me. XD I always have to much energy and walk/dance around, sometimes for hours cause I don't realize.. . After I realized I could use that to my advantage and just clean my way though my apartment. I'm unstoppable now xD
I'm a teacher, and in my country there are many ADHD kids whose parents don't accept their diagnose, therefore they have little to no help. I try to help as I can and the first example was me just yesterday, I have to admit. I'll definitely suggest my students use these strategies and see what happens
The song thing is genius. And you just explained why I always studied better in the library where I felt like I was in competition with everybody else who was studying.
I do the song thing for study (diferent song/Playlist for each subject, and try to do us much us I can in one song) and to force myself to read books (find song that I like and that suits the book atmosphere and listen to that song every time I read the book, moreover I had to read the book every time I wanted to listen to that song ,so every time I wanted to hear the song, I also made myself reading)
And that works much better than, turn aside all the stuff and just do it (like my parents always forced me to do, and I know I'm not alone in this) and fill yourself with guilt that you can't do such a simple thing.
Like, all that I had read in my teenage years was one book that I get hyperfixated on , and even that book I couldn't finish.. but now when I figured out that tactic I finally finished one book in just 3 weeks and now reading the second book .
Just think about how much shame it could prevent just from acknowledging the difference between adhd brain and nerotipical brain.
And yes I diagnosed with adhd just few months ago, and that really make a difference.
The first one actually helps me so much even at work. There's cameras, but no one actually is watching them. I just pretend someone always is and is tracking how productive I'm being.

There is this site where you can join a giant zoom call with all kinds of students worldwide and then you put your camera on (it’s automatically muted for everyone) and go to work. It helps me when I’m studying at home alone and feeling unmotivated. I forgot what it’s called though lol

professionally diagnosed here, caffeine can be a decent test (though a few folks with adhd respond better with depressants). i hated the taste of coffee but loved caffeinated soda and thought that the caffeine was 'waking me up' a tiny bit, until i found out i'd been chugging Dr. Pepper with NO idea that it was caffeinated, and felt nothing. That broke the illusion and I've since realized I can drink entire energy drinks and take a nap, all it does is help me lock onto tasks rather than struggling to focus because it's a stimulant similar (but much weaker) than most ADHD meds. I wasn't diagnosed until I was given test meds, and instead of euphoria, I had a complete fucking revelation where all the blurry static that I hadn't even realized was happening in my brain at all FOCUSED into one channeled train of thought. I could literally choose to tune in to my math teacher talking if I wanted to, and it wasn't like trying to push a boulder up a mountain. It was INSANE. I hadn't even realized that my attention had been controlling me and not the other way around until I tried that tiny dose of ritalin (though I'm pretty small & underweight so meds hit me hard) and discovered that it was actually possible to 'tune in' on purpose and that literally everybody could do that. That's why I heard 'just focus' or 'you need to listen better' but I'd never understood it until then.
The neurobiology of ADHD is pretty fascinating and it's been a while since I did a deep dive, but iirc the communication between and levels of dopamine and serotonin are not only lower than most but there's an observable difference in sections of the brain related to executive function, and those stimulants (usually) boost your chemicals enough to be able to sustain the focus that your brain usually can't hold onto. A few of my good friends with unmedicated ADHD are absolutely overloaded on caffeine all the time and you wouldn't know it, and in my experience it's really hard to ever get caffeine jitters (still not sure if I ever really experienced it or just placebo-ed myself into thinking it) because you're not at the starting level a neurotypical is when they consume it, and it effects you a lot differently.

that can be caffeine tolerance. if you abstain from caffeine until it's completely out of the system and withdrawals is over, AND THEN you reintroduce it, I am sure it will feel jittery/wired and noticable.@@someguy34231

A lot of people put unfair stigma on self-diagnosis. The problem with self-diagnosis is when people stop with just that and think it's 100% reliable and never needs anything else. But *any* issue you bring up with a doctor begins with self-diagnosis. If you fell and injured your leg and told the doctor, "I think I broke my leg," it would be pretty unreasonable for the doctor or anyone else to criticize your analysis. They shouldn't say, "well, that's just a self-diagosis, it doesn't mean anything. Your shin could be bent at a 45° angle for completely normal reasons. And maybe the bone is sticking out like that because you're imagining it so hard we _both_ see it. Maybe you're just lazy and want to avoid standing, so you're making up this whole _broken leg_ issue. Just get through it with _willpower_ and you'll be fine." They'd be looked at like a crazy person if they treated a broken leg like that. But broken mental processes? If your ability to concentrate or filter out overwhelming sensory information or process impulses or manage mood or even just exert willpower in general were broken, they feel perfectly justified in unloading all the criticism in the world on a person who deigns to try understanding their problem enough to realize they have a problem, and then take those suspicions to a professional.
Only *you* can know, for sure, if the mental processes happening in your own head are facilitating or impeding your ability to live your life the way you want to. And when you go to a professional, it's not to get "permission" to have a disorder; it's to identify what the problem could be. If you have something in mind, they can either verify and validate that _yes,_ you were on the right track; or _no,_ it may resemble that, but it's *actually* this other thing. And the difference is _this_ issue that you weren't taking into consideration because it didn't even occur to you that it was atypical. *Many* people deal with atypical mental processes, or lack thereof, that they _aren't even aware of;_ incorrectly believing that their personal, inner experience is universal. For a *long* time, I believed many things I was dealing with were just things that _everyone_ deals with and wondered, "how is it that other people can get the results they do while dealing with all this?" I wondered "how can people make the decisions they do in spite of their minds screaming at them not to?" Or "how can people _not_ do things in spite of their minds constantly screaming at them to do it?" And my fundamental misconception was in presuming that their minds were _actually_ screaming these things at them in the first place.
Being academically competitive is probably what got me thru school to an extent

I have to say genuinely thank you for making video’s, your tips for dealing with my ADHD come in handy way more than any therapy has ever and it feels like someone actually understands how it is to live with it and it be one more thing on my list of many struggles I deal with everyday.

The first one! This was literally me in undergrad every time I went to the library before my diagnosis. I never sat in the private rooms unless I was taking an exam bc I wouldn't have that competition. It actually helped me so much!!

Okay the task music one is 50/50 bc adhd is commonly linked with anxiety and anger issues. So if u dont get the task done in time u may feel useless or like ur not good enough (atleast thats what happens to me), so u should test it out and think how u would react if u didnt finish it in time b4 doing it!
