I was a not as trained in trucks when I bought my truck.
I was trying to fix my car but parts were unobtainium. They kept looking for parts for what became weeks. I was losing faith for a repair.
The truck was about a year old. A fella bought it as his first new vehicle, bought the custom, did some changes, was pretty proud of his truck.
But it got costly to run. 10 mpg costly. He heard I was considering a vehicle and asked If I'd be interested in his truck.
Ok so I got it, it was basically brand new as he took care of it. As I recall, about a year old.
so that was 1987, so we move to today.
The truck has been the most reliable vehicle in my collection.
Down the road, that Crap Clear Coat peeled. and we had problems with the cab corners.
I had it fixed BY A REPUTABLE SHOP, I thought. I paid enough. The paint looked good but they filled the cab corners with BONDO.
I learned later, they screwed me.
so the truck had a few years in storage, (bad idea folks, drive em) and when I brought her home, WOW.
The Driver rocker rusted out, part of the driver floor rusted out, of course the darn cab corners were gone.
I have my fixes for all that.
I am doing it over now again.
RUST is the culprit. And the reason the rust got me was the COWL.
Folks I am here to tell you, that freaking Cowl lets debri in your system, deposits it in the fenders, in the rockers,
and if you dont know, the air flows up the windshield pillars, over the roof and down the cab corners.. So you are wondering
why the cab corner rust huh?
The GM cowl is a bad design for stopping debri, it lets it pass through.
The rockers have a plate the is bent to prevent critters from getting in, but it keeps the debri in, and as it sits wet, it rots the metal.
there are two other hot spots, well maybe 3.
One is the hood. If you have not applied something to stop the rust under the hood, your gonna need a new hood.
Rust gets in the metal pinch areas and it starts rusting. My cure is to spray Mineral Oil in the hood front, sides and back and some of the
braces. Mineral Oil will seep where ever there is rust, rust sucks the oil like a sponge and the rust stops.
behind the rear wheels on the box is another spot on the fender.
yup mine had rust. I thought it was surface till a hole showed up. Both sides. yep were fixing them too.
I said 3 areas. The lower area along the rear of the cab, between the cab and the box gets rust, at least mine did.
this one is tough because you really need to remove the box to fix it. I'm going to do a temp fix for this year and
fix it right next year.
I have grown my ability to handle these messes watching Pole Barn Garage. He can take basket cases and get them running and some of the body work he has done is incredible.
My truck should be done for this year in a couple of weeks. My thanks to yTube vids for keeping me going. That includes you Unc Buck.

Just bought a 1973 GMC 1500 square body. 86 running gear, reserve gas tank, and a bit of rust. Great interior. There’s some work that needs to be done but runs like a charm. Didn’t know where to start and now I finally found someone restoring these beauties to watch.

Hate to argue, but my 77 c15 has never been in a wreck, been in the family since new. My doors sag like crazy. Started doing the restoration 10 years ago, all rebuilt drivetrain, fuel tanks, lines brakes, everything. Then it sat all this time, finally got back at the old girl, she's running good, time for the body work...

Speakers in the door sound better. It fills the cab with sound more evenly and unmuffled. Subwoofers would be obviously better placed behind the seat. Door speakers are also better if you’re camping or tailgating.

The Square Body Mafia in my area don't mess with rust or bondo. They have contacts in Mexico and Brazil where they can purchase any body part made from carbon fiber dirt cheap.
The hole for the 6x9 is for the sound if they had done that in the back of the seat the sound wouldn’t have been the same being that the seats covered the sound!

I own and drive it daily,a 1973 C10 Custom that has a 250 six, three speed manual, manual steering, manual brakes,no a/c. It has a lot of rust on body but the frame is straight

I have a 88 Blazer with 79,000 original miles that's been maintained regularly and parked in a garage its whole life! The driveline needs to be rebuilt with new seals, but that's about it.

Send 'em all up here, no title needed in NH for anything that old. Up here I'd be restoring that truck and putting it on the road. I've got a pretty clean '77 c15 I picked up last year. Came from VT, nice and straight truck. Sometimes I think the 2wd trucks didn't get driven much in the new england winters.

Seriously, I'm in NH as well looking at the rust on this truck, and thinking, "That's no parts truck" - Give me a few spare license plates and that'd become my daily.
Replacing the front lights and signals along with the old push bumpers with rectangles running lights is the hardest part for me.

I got an 84 custom deluxe army truck (cucv) a few years ago. Getting that title rearranged for me was a little tricky i recall but it got done. No ac but its awesome!

No title needs in most states, I found a 1987 no rust with tile and manuals with all the work done on it within the Hilton manual. I did have to fix the front passenger side, so I bought new doors, front fenders seat covers from LMC truck! I am putting it back together adding electric fan with aluminum radiator. Not changing much else. I may put a Digital gauges?

I bought my 81 C10, from original owner. Sat outside in colorado since 1981. It has a title. It has been wrecked and rear bedside still shows it. It has rust in doors and sills. It has a 250-6 and three speed hurst on the floor (Thank god, although I would love a 3 on the tree again). Its now my daily driver, 2 wd, year round in Co. I think there is a third category, 1, build, 2 parts, and 3 daily driving truck. My brother calls it a farm truck. I call it Ralph.

Don't want to be a pain, but, I need a better 4 speed than my standard Saginaw 3 speed. Do you think the saginaw will stand up behind a 350 with about 300 HP? Do you have something that will?
i have a buddy that uses 89-99 3/4 or 1 ton 5 speeds. they seem to hold up and the Over-drive is awesome
I got a 1974 c20 camper special 454 just last September. Had title and all never been messed with trim and all still there. Hard to find one that has never been altered . Also no speaker holes in doors. Also number matching frame cab And engine.

Throw your magnet in the trash, its pointless. 73-80 squares always have Rust issues, shoddy bondo repairs, thats expected. 010 blocks can either be a 2 or 4 bolt. You wont know what you have until you tear the pan off.

Anything in Alabama pre 1975 and older can only sell with bill of sale just how are state is. But if we buy anything out of state we need a title to register

I bought a straight 83 Silverado the other day lwb for 300 body only. Luckily i live in Alabama and you dont have to have a title for a car over 35 years. That works out great for me because the newest vehicle ive ever owned was a 89 gmc jimmy(s10 blazer) with a built 4,3 in 2005. Ive had maybe 50 total C10 half 67,-72 about half 73- 80 now the 83 I love C10s. I can just beat myself senseless thinking about the ones i let go

My 74 chev has a lot of rust issues, but not in places that are not typical (note that i've seen personally) like in the bed pan and the quarter panels above the tire, the front clip is not original, fenders pretty much split in half like a fortune cookie about 15 years ago cuz of the rust. Other than that though, ots a straight as hell truck that we've had since 1978, and im only 16. Its the truck the family uses to either drive to school, or to cruise around.

Also Buck...another common problem is water leakage into the floor when it rains...you will think its a leaky widshield but in reality its coming from the body seal that has gone bad in the cowel area below the wiper area...just needs to be resealed.

Just picked up a 84 Silverado k10 4x4 with a 350 in it and with a title it’s not horrible but not great gonna try restore enough to be my daily driver. But man the steering is loose and sloppy lol. Has to be one of my favorite things I’ve picked up. Great video

I recently got a '76 GMC Sierra from my Dad who bought it new then took off and has saved the original parts but made it a high performance race truck. Put it in shows, took 2nd place. After that he drove it during the summer, stored in winter. Was undercoated in '77. 400 Small block, 68,000 (+-) miles. Dual tanks. Been stored now off upon jacks for now 20 years, no bearing issues. Wheels turn easy. He's stored it okay. A tire delaminated many years ago so there's a dent there. Every factory option, even AC. I have everything, even the window sticker.
What's it worth? $
Can't put a price on all that family history. With out seeing it, driving it, I would not feel comfortable giving a hard number. But, to the right person it could be worth a bunch. have a great weekend
You should see one of them it still has the paint on the frame and yes I heard my titles are worth $2,000 alone

I'd add to check the steering box bolts in the frame on the 4 x 4's they're known for wallowing out or cracking the frame there. And also the cowl fills up with all kinds of crud like leaves and pine needles depending upon your location and it does the same thing you're talking about under the battery tray.

Thanks for the additional tips! Checking the steering box bolts and keeping an eye on the cowl are definitely important maintenance steps for 4x4s.
Its not just a K10 frame. I am working through a C10 frame conversion right now that has the steering box issue. I was surprised to see it.

Guess I’ve been lucky on all that, as I’ve never had an issue with buying an old square body with a title or even getting a title on an old square body. As for the magnet, yeah that works in most cases if it’s a back yard bondo job. I’ve always used the tap test, as bondo is always going to give off a different sound when tapped. My biggest problem has always been that dang, foldable hood early square body’s have. As for the rusty body panel’s, I can buy those dime a dozen off of LMC trucks.

In my opinion the number 1 thing to check is for a rusted out firewall/windshield frame. If it has that, its pretty much fatal to that cab, unless you are super talented at metal work or have super deep pockets to pay someone to repair. In FL i see these trucks all the time with lower windshield frames totally rotted away or the firewall seem rusted like swiss cheese.
I have heard that is an issue on the coasts. lucky we don't get that here in Oklahoma. Wishing you all the best for the future builds.
@@unclebucksgarage7695 yep, it's a real issue and it really sucks. I have an 82 c10 and whats crazy is that it actually has good floors and decent rockers but due to bad luck it has a 100% rotted out windshield frame and a super holey roof skin. It's a common problem in my area so donor cabs are in basically the same shape and finding patch pieces at the junkyard are not an option because they are always rotted too or someone else's cuts them out.

@@unclebucksgarage7695 yep a lot of people in my area buy parts trucks from out of state just to get useable/decent cabs. Believe it or not even though FL is considered the "south" our old cars get some pretty serious rot around here.

My daily looked a lot like this when i pulled it out of the ditch it had sat in for 8 years. 5 years later and shes in much happier condition. Even has a 5 speed now 🤘

Last k5 I did you could open the door and walk all the way to the tranny hump. There was no rocker or floor at all! No biggie though, just cut the parts out of one of my parts trucks and weld it back together. 😎

Got mine in the profile pic when I was 14/15 been slowing restoring it since. Now 21 and I daily her. She’s not as pretty as she was In the picture like when I first got her but the drivetrains all built frame is pristine she’s got a lil rust here and there but the body’s pretty much clean. Beds seen better days lol. But cabs solid.

Hey! So, I have a '74 K20. I got it running and driving, but it didn't have much power when I stepped on the gas. I thought I needed to adjust the timing and tweak the carburetor. I started with the HEI distributor, set it to top dead center, dropped the distributor in, and put the spark plug wires in the right order. But it's still not running right, even though I know there's spark and it's getting gas. It cranks but won't fire, and now the carb is spitting gas out the top.
It's 180 degrees out
does sound 180 out, pull the distibutor out a little spin it 180 Degrees and put it back in, try that and let me know

I'm like you I do not understand about people having a squarebodys setting in the woods park the truck and take the keys out and let them sit there and rust away but they say oh I'm going to restored you go back 10 years still sitting there and will not sell it trees grown up around it and will not sell them I know where there are two Chevrolet trucks 81 model and 82 model saying their rusting away and will not sell them but they say they going to restore they've got trees around and we got to take the chainsaw and cut them down I mean drove into the woods at the edge of a field and they left them there Chrome intakes and more and will not sell them why not you're not going to use them so Nola I can go pick them up but can't move them to the trees that's bulshit I've got a 85 Silverado 4 wheel drive sitting in a barn I bought it for $1,500 I've been offered $8,000 for it right now but I'm going to use it I just put a new transmission in it last night I'm restoring it if you like to contact me I'm in North Carolina there's old Square bodies everywhere

Im looking at a Chevy truck for a build project and the dr side foot well section of the floor and the rockers and the floor pan it's almost rusted completely off, but I am still considering trying to get the truck until 3 years ago it was sitting for a junk rear diff,79 Chevy k10 Scottsdale with ac regular cab long bed.
Same thing as the underhood with the truck considering..
Anyway the truck i was talking about the passenger side isn't bad why i am still considering it and it is a Ohio truck.
The 79 Chevy k10 Scottsdale i just mentioned has a clean title..
