I live in a gated community for those 55+. Although I agree with you that masculine type clothes can add a touch of modern, the problem I've noticed here where I live is that the women dress in such a head-to-toe masculine way that it not only ages them but makes them look almost indistinguishable from their husbands. I dress in the opposite way with slimming feminine dresses, heeled shoes/boots, shoulder length hair, and well-applied makeup. It's then not surprising that I get comments from the women here that I'm too young to be living in their community and to come back in twenty years. I think the secret is to dress more feminine as you age and to add just a touch of masculine like that lovely leather jacket you showed-which I have too, of course! Thank you as always for your excellent channel.

No one ever commented on my hair when it was long and dyed. But since I embraced my natural grey and got a pixie cut I've received loads of compliments! If you pair short grey hair with more youthful or even edgier pieces like the moto jacket it works much better than going the baggy trousers & cardigan route.

    Dear Ms. Lecouer:
The black, leather jacket is very modern and youthful and looks amazing on you. I love the touch of the unexpected (socks) to boost the mood. As for hair, if one has a youthful face, then she can still wear her hair long and it looks great. But with a lot of wrinkles and sagging skin, the long hair does age the face; you are absolutely correct. I like the idea of wearing jeans that are flattering (not baggy); they really do add a youthful touch. Thank you for these tips!

I think your ideas are marvelous - with one exception: I have long, white hair and it suits me well. When my hair was short I looked 10 years older! But I think it's an individual call. I also love to wear button down, masculine shirts. I have a big bust and try to minimize it just a little so men actually look into my eyes instead of at my chest. BTW, I just purchased a moto jacket in darkish blue. Love it! Thank you so much for your wonderful videos.

My belief is that it is all in the cut, and a great stylist is pure gold. It is easy to frame the face without compromising too much of the length. Gaging from your profile photo, I think your face would look lovely framed by your hair, and you wouldn’t have to compromise on the length to get that effect. I will send great thoughts and vibes that you will find an amazing stylist if and/or when you decide to take the leap. ❤️❤️❤️

I remember my mum and my nan having their hair coloured - it was like a helmet with no natural difference of nuance. I sweared I would never do that, and I haven't. I love my grey hair - still with a lot of my natural brown (but getting less with time). The colour doesn't seem to age me, but that may be down to the cut, and that I've switched up my make-up.

@Annike deGroot, Me too. Although my hair is still dark (I have a few strands of grey appearing here and there), even when I wear my hair up, everyone comments on how much it ages me, including my son who is brutal with his honesty. So much depends on how well we take care of our hair - regular visits to have it trimmed and using good products to clean and nourish our hair.

Marie Anne: I’m glad you’re feeling better.
European women tend to cut their hair short as the American women tend to have it bit longer hair. I think as we age we can wear it longer as long as its taken care of it, also depends on each person. I have a lots of hair very full and looks good on me, it’s little over the shoulder and I keep it well styled . I always ask my daughter and she assures me that it’s okay I look good 😊 she tells me shorter hair on me makes me look older. I do dress stylish as you’re showing in the video and that helps too.

Obviously It's all individual choices, but I don't think short hair is always such agood idea. I wear almost shoulder length with a fringe. And yes,it is dyed in my natural colour to cover grey streaks.
Here in Germany many hairdressers want to cut the hair of women over 50 short, but in all honesty on many women this looks very maskuline and unflattering. -There are exceptions.

I am 73 and I let my grey hair grow out during Covid lockdown. I love the freedom of not dying my hair. My hair is just touching my shoulder and I can wear it up or down and is very helpful when exercising or cooking. It has long layers that keep it from being drawn down around my face. My biggest problem with lighter hair is my dark brown eyes look intense. My dark hair balanced the color. Thanks for the youthful tips. I love a pop of color in my handbags. I get more compliments on them than my expensive jewelry. I change my bags frequently and carry minimal things.

Love your tips and totally agree about the long grey hair! However, pixie cuts are not for everyone. Marie-Anne you have a beautiful bone structure and no double chin! A lot of women here in Oz wear very short haircuts when they are older and overweight, it's for convenience I think. In Australia the neck can get very wrinkled with the sun too. In any case, if your jawline is less than perfect, some longer hair to frame the face and soften the edges doesn't hurt.

  • @Patriot1789
    @Patriot1789 Před 2 lety +6

I think the ideas here are great and I actually do use a fair number of them. But one of the joys of getting older is that some of us are able to finally develop an attitude of “couldn’t care less what you think of what I’m wearing.” In addition, as you age your body shape changes even if you weigh the same. The midsection gets larger no matter what and that often makes jeans uncomfortable. One of the great freedoms of getting older is that you start to care about comfort just a little more than being “stylish.” Doesn’t mean we should look dumpy, but I’ve never seen a headstone that said: “She was always stylish.” For example, I love the look of high or even medium heels but my arthritis and remnant problems from cancer treatment just doesn’t allow that and I think it is foolish to suffer pain for the sake of vanity. Balance in all of life is always necessary and always chic.

Everyone has seen those women that still style their hair and dress as if they are perpetually 20. Accentuating all your physical assets at one time is what a girl does to draw attention to herself, knowing how to emphasize and dress those assets is what a woman does to be memorable!

I am 71 years old, going on 37, (in my head and heart) and taking my time about it! I love most of your tips for French chic and a freshness to one's style, but I dislike leather anything, especially jackets: had one years ago, found it way too hot (not in a good way) to wear here in our African climate! I also do not enjoy wearing anything masculine, as I really enjoy being a girl! The exception is a well tailored black blazer - this smartens up anything for a meeting! Currently, here at the end of our springtime, our temperatures are in the low 30 degrees Celsius already, so I am wearing a youthful, sleeveless white crinkle cotton dress with a turquoise mesh cover up. (My arms are really ugly, so I need to keep them covered.) And flat nude sandals.....already this morning someone told me I look like a cool drink, full of freshness! I cut my hair to a very short layered bob, and it looks lovely and is cooler to wear. And yes, I wear dark wash denims, but not when our temps are so high! (My other 3 summer dresses are colourful: one blues and white, then a pink hued print with touches of blue, very bright, and a kind of tropical print that somehow works. I always get compliments......HAPPY! And I am always ready to see clients during my unpredictable studio hours....

The leather Moto looks try hard on most and can accentuate the fact that someone is older. Especially men will say " look at that old lady in the moto jacket". Leather is also bad for the environment - and the animals. Not that anyone seems to care anymore.

You have lots of good ideas. My Covid hair is longer but I had a pixie for years and will go back to short hair soon. I have great boots and socks that are fun! I live in a cool climate so bare feet in boots are not sensible or comfortable! I am 66 and often people are surprised at my age. I have a decent skincare routine and tend to smile whenever I can. Thank you, Marie-Anne, for such wonderful tips. I want you to know that I returned to a shorter pixie hairstyle in part by how chic you look in yours. Your last tip, "think young" really is a great one...I honestly don't know if some ladies even know how, I see so many frowns on ladies in their 50s, 60s, and beyond. May I add that smiling makes a woman of any age look younger. Also, the way a woman carries herself with her posture, which if it's slouchy, etc., it can make her look very old. I saw a couple of ladies (i'm guessing) younger than I am, and they were both walking slumped, heads hung low, and shuffling their feet with sour looks on their faces (they might have been related, come to think of it, their walking style was so similar), and they both looked SO old! Less to do with age and more to do with condition of the hair and face shape. My 30 year old neighbor had long, thin, dark hair which made her look nondescript. She cut it off very short and dyed it blonde. She looked amazing!

thankyou so much. This is one of the best fashion videos I have seen. I am 64, but people always think I am younger, fortunately. My day to day look is .jeans and tee shirt, but I will try the stripey man look now. I love wearing my motorbike jacket, but things I will look out for are the lovely little bags you mentioned and the socks. Great ideas. I love living in France as well x

I adore biker jackets, including with a dress. I rarely wear a blazer except with jeans or trousers. My style is lady biker, I think. I like to wear dress, biker jacket , heels and some edgy jewellery. I always think of older friends and what they would say if almost 56 year old me said I am old! I’d get lynched!

Your tips are marvelous! For me, jeans are everything, youthful, classic, tailored, a bit masculine, a bit dressed up, a bit dressed down, very rock and roll, and completely sexy! Thank you for giving us styling ideas that are accessible and that instantly boost one's style. I would love to see a video from you on attitude behind the look, or on how to pull your look off and make things work in French chic way!

Just what I needed was this video. Think younger yes - I need to think younger. I look younger than what I am but lately I feel old and feel my age. You are right jeans and a leather jacket does look younger. I wore a Royal blue leather jacket with jeans and it looked great. All I need now is to get my head to feel younger.

Even though I’m only 36, and technically the age-specific advice doesn’t apply to me yet, I really enjoy your videos and learn a lot! You have great style, which I hope to have when I’m older. And something I definitely agree with you on, is having a young-mindset! That is crucial, and something I want to hold into for the rest of my life. 💗
Thank you for another great video!
(Also, I think I’ll try to start wearing my dad’s old, leather, Harley Davidson jacket more. He decided to give it to me a couple years ago. He wore it in his 20’s, during the 1970’s, when he rode motorcycles. 💗)

I enjoy telling people that in 3 years I'LL BE 70 -- yes, I flaunt it and love it! You should see the admiring glances I get in response. I love wild and wacky colorful socks for all occasions. I've gone to the big boys shop for tailored slacks and button down shirts that suit all. Suggestion: if you haven't done so already, how about doing a video on dressing TOO YOUNG. Unfortunately, I've seen lovely ladies of all ages who dress like they are still skinny mini teens from decades ago. Merci for all of your help and upbeat attitude.

Agreed 100%! Aging with Grace doesn’t mean pretending you’re still in your 20’s or 30’s. I see so many women, especially those with teen and young adult daughters, dressing like their kids. You know, ripped jeans, mini skirts, etc. You always look best in quality pieces that flatter your figure. I was in Paris in September and paid particular attention to how older women dressed. Thanks to you I was very frequently mistaken as a French woman, which I consider such a compliment!

Interesting about the hair. At Christmas I cut my collarbone length hair to just below my ears. My girlfriends and I loved it, but the best comment I ever received from any of the men (including my husband) was, "it's your hair but I liked it better long." I'm trying a shag as a compromise--longer in the back, shorter around the face. And I absolutely love how easy it is to style!

I do not agree about gray hair. Not all grey hair are the same...50 shades of gray! Textures turn out to be very different too. I am 63 and I started to wear my hair medium long ( colar bone) and layered ( so versatile). I Got so many compliments amazingly from young people. Short or long as long it is modern. Get advices from a modern, up to speed hairdresser.

So do I. I've white hair, transitionef to it 3 years ago, a bob, and I never looked younger since my 60ies. I've heard that people think my white is very expensive made by my hairdresser, but no, it's made by nature and I'm proud of that color. Thus, with short hair I looked older and "like the others", so I was told. I'm 74 now, luckily without wrinkles, and everybody thinks that I'm much younger, as I am used to "modern" clothes and am still working.
