    I found the 32 inch Mivitar brand parabolic softbox to be a better buy. It has the same construction as the Light Dome SE (the metal part), but it is only $100. Can't beat that with a stick. A trick for setting up the box is to pull only 4 rods into place, all 90 degrees from each other, and then set the end of the rods on the floor and push down on the middle. All the rest of the rods will snap into place without having to do them individually.

    I learned a lot from all the details, much appreciated. Myself, after shooting through an umbrella for a few months, and waiting a long time for the Light Dome II to even be in stock at the places I usually buy from, I just recently tried one (35 inches) from a company calling itself NiceFoto. I'm not sophisticated enough to judge the details, but it does replicate the easy breakdown of the Light Dome II. Sadly, of course it does not have a gel holder - I could use that for the old Aputure light I have (it runs a little on the cool side, the older C120D). Anyway, it's about $129 US. I've been enjoying your videos for a while ; they are both fun and helpful. - Dave

    Sorry to be commenting after 3 years but I found this video now, good work on everything except at 3:44 when you talk about the quality and say that there's no difference I have to disagree, either the lights where set up differently (angle, distance, power, etc) or the SE has a worse quality. You can see on the left side of the face the rolloff is much smoother for the LD II, no harsh edges more uniform fill (even with youtube's crappy compression). The fact that the SE is shallower and smaller is the main reason for that, the distance from the diffusion element plays a big part in lighting.

      It should be :) I have the 60x and I shoot it through 2 stop diffusion material. Although, it does depend on what your intended purpose is

  • @almanages
    @almanages Před 2 lety +4

    Great review thank you. Although I must disagree with the output where you suggest there is hardly no difference between the two. from your own video I can see a very noticeable difference in softness and drop off. which is not a bad for say. if this is what you are looking for than great. The difference in the two dome is the depth. the farther the light sit the softer the light will be. on the other hand you can't make it crisper if you want the look of the SE but you can soften the SE with an additional difuser if you want. so both dome are great as you mentioned and the weight also matter I agree, especially if you have to back pack all your shooting gear on location lol, I'll take the lightest any day.
