I would put the truck bed liner below the waterline where the ducks cant see it and makes the bottom more durable. Camo paint the interior where the ducks can see it. Looks nice tho!
Did a good job! Now for those that wonder ill share some tips. As far a bedliner, Raptor liner is superior and not as gritty plus is uv protected. Also patterns get full of paint quick so using real or artificial leaves work better and are cheaper. True cam must have a minimum of 3 colors and black is mandatory for depth and shadowing. Good advice to add a clearcoat for enamal paints even once cured are soft and not very durable if abused but easily touched up! Great video.. PS I've done a ton of camo trucks so I do know what I'm talking about from experience.. Happy painting!
Its a pity you are allowed only one "thumbs-up", and why do they even call it that when you are allowed only one per person. But anyway thanks for that mate!!! Thoroughly enjoyed your contribution.

Working through this same pattern and color selection on my jon boat. The stencils sure get messy with paint that builds up on the reverse side. It ends up putting extra "globs" of paint where you don't want them when moving the pattern. Me being OCD, it's driving me nuts. My wife says I'm overreacting and you won't see those imperfections once all the paint is scrambled together. I believe she's probably right.
Hey man just want to say it looks amazing. I’m trying to order the stencils. If you remember the names of them. What are the 3 names of the stencils you used. Because it looks like the 2nd and 3rd you used are the same ones.

I did a kayak last year quick and just sprayed it on. Looked great until I moved it and paint immediately chipped off. I now know I should have sanded and applied a base coat or primer? How has your canoe held up, I'm pickin one up todah and I'm going to paint it. I like the truck liner inside, dose that aid in gripping? But mainly is there anything to prep the boat that would help the durability of the paint job since you have done this? Looks great!
Thanks for watching! Kayaks are tough because they are typically made out of plastic, and I’ve never had much luck with paint adhering well to plastic. My canoe is all fiberglass so the paint has held up really well aside from oyster bed scrapes on the bottom. Sanding before painting and adding a base coat to the plastic may help. The clear coat on mine makes all the difference. I do have to touch up the truck bed liner every year or so just in spots where it wears. It helps with gripping and cuts down the glare from the original base color. Hope this helps.
Thanks! You can definitely camo the inside after the bed liner dries. It's more of a personal preference. I have a camo blind for the canoe, so I prefer the dark backdrop behind my blind to give it a shadow effect.

Question - How did it stand up to use, as this was posted almost 2 years ago? My first time painting a boat this winter /spring, I am in the process of sanding old paint off now, while I "break" from doing that, I am looking for ways to paint when done. This looks fantastic! I contacted RustOleum, about primer and use of the paint you used, and they are telling me this - " The Self Etching Primer and Camouflage coatings may be used above the water line; unfortunately, they will not stand up below the water line. The coatings are not designed for water immersion and will likely bubble or peel from the surface." However, my boat will not be on the water all the time, only when I am out hunting or fishing...then I pull it out and it is on a trailer when I am not using it, similar to a canoe. Usually canoes are not in the water 100%. Did you have any issues with that bubbling and peeling they say will happen? They also directed me to marine paint for the hull, I am thinking they expect it to be in the water 100% maybe. I did e mail back and tell them it won't be.
Hi Terry. Thanks for watching. The paint has held up really well over the past two seasons. There has been minimal peeling and no visible bubbles. I think the key to that is the clear coat. I store the canoe on an outdoor rack so it is exposed to the elements 24/7. The bottom of the canoe has scratched a bit but that was to be expected since I have dragged it across rocks and levees on many hunts and fishing trips. I would say the the paint on the bottom has held up well even for that. Aside from the scratches on the bottom, the exterior paint looks almost identical to how it did when I painted it two years ago. I will say the bed liner on the interior does wear in spots and needs to be touched up in the off season. Hopefully this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.
@@fowlfishingoutdoors8780 You're welcome and thanks for the response! I was thinking the same thing about the clear coat, it would help prevent any peeling or bubbling, and agree, I think that is the key to longevity. Scratches are to be expected, that's for sure. I realize your canoe is aluminum, I am doing fiberglass, and will probably use self-etching primer before I paint. I am doing a fiberglass 14 ft V-hull, older 1972, open topside, three seats. Sanding old paint off the hull, once the color is gone, there is like a yellowish /cream color material, really smooth, not sure what that is....is that what is called gel coat that is put on fiberglass when they build them? I have no idea. It's extremely hard, and I do not intend to remove that, just don't know what it is! Looks like who had it before me painted over one other color, with a color under that, so three coats of paint, then the cream color appears. To reduce sanding time, where it seems the old paint has stuck really well, I am going to try to feather that smooth while sanding, just eliminating the cracks, peels and bubbles that are predominant in ...well...a lot of areas. Your response has helped in my decisions and pushed me closer to how I am going to finish this project! As for the bed liner, I may do that, unsure at this time, I may just paint the topside olive drab. For the hull and sides, I am like 85 to 90% sure now that I am going to follow what you have done. I like that and how it turned out! Time will tell, I have plenty of time to think about it while I sand away! Any other tips you may have will be appreciated!
The spray liner holds up pretty well. It will most likely wear down in high traffic areas over time (primarily beneath your feet). I typically touch up the worn spots with more spray liner before each hunting season. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for watching! The canoe is actually all fiberglass. It’s my grandpa’s old canoe that’s over 25 years old. I didn’t have any issues with the fiberglass. I’ve done the same pattern on my Jon boat and it’s held up for years on all aluminum. I’m not sure about plastic. Yes. I’m a Bengals fan. Who Dey! Hope this helps!
I really like your video and am likely to paint my old red canoe is a similar way, mostly because your paint job looks cool. Additionally, my son wants us to try waterfowl hunting so maybe eventually we will use the canoe for that. If you use your canoe for waterfowl hunting, why did you paint the inside solid black instead of camo? It seems like the solid black interior would be very obvious to birds. (I assume you use a net or some cover over your boat but a camo interior might make the cover less critical.)
Thank you for watching and I’m glad you enjoyed the video. I hope you and your son enjoy years of waterfowl hunting like me and my dad. I didn’t paint the inside camo because I wanted a more durable coating on the high traffic areas. I also typically cover the inside with camo burlap and netting to blind in the inside of the boat. The black adds a shadow effect through the burlap and netting. By the time the birds come in that close, it’s typically too late. Splash down!
It looks super nice the only question I have is could you have gotten away with skipping the bark pattern cause the way u put so much grass on it you can't see it?
The bedliner holds up fairly well. It is not rubberized. I typically have to touch up the bedliner in the offseason for chips and wear spots especially under my feet.
I have a canoe that is already sand in color. If I start with that as the base instead of green, do you think it would turn out okay? If so, should I use the same topping colors? Thanks!
I think it would still turn out great. Since the base coat on your canoe is already sand, I would suggest using the forest green with the cattails stencil and then overlapping with the brown. You could always add more overlapping with the sand color if necessary before adding the clear coat. Thanks for watching!
The clear coat does an excellent job of preventing the paint job from chipping, so I highly recommend applying a clear coat. I painted my Jon Boat with the same camo pattern over 5 years ago and have been on countless duck hunts and fishing trips without hardly a scratch. Depending on your terrain, you may experience some chipping. For example, if you hunt salt marshes with oyster beds there’s a good chance the paint will chip if you run across rocks or drag the boat across an oyster bed. Aside from that though, the paint job holds up very well, and if you do ever experience any chipping, it’s super easy to touch up the paint job. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
The paint is still on it and it looks great aside from some scratches on the bottom from dragging over rock levies. The bed-liner on the interior needs touch up in some spots but for the most part held up really well. Thanks for watching!
I haven’t noticed much of a difference with heat after using the bedliner. My canoe is fiberglass, so I never really had issues with heat prior to applying the bed liner either. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

How did the clear coat hold up ? Did it flake off in time?
Hi Vernon. The clear coat has held up great. The only paint that has come off was due to dragging it over rock levies and sliding it in and out of my truck bed. Overall it still looks great. Thanks for watching!
Wow!
Did you use any primer before painting it
Thanks for watching! No I did not use primer.
Did the clear coat make it shine any? I would be worried it could possible flare birds if it was a shiny clear coat.
Thanks for watching! I haven’t had any issues with birds flaring away from the boat, but my canoe is typically tucked back in the cattails with netting and palmettos sitting over it and sits low to the water. @@fowlfishingoutdoors8780 How many cans did you go through for just the bed liner? How many cans did you go through for the other spray paint?

The total number of cans may vary depending on the size of your canoe. I don't recall the exact number of cans used for my 16 foot canoe, but I'll try to give you my best recollection:

• 4-6 cans Deep Forest Green
