Hi Kiesa, lovely cover and you have a beautiful voice.
Just a friendly tip though, try to be really careful with tension in your lower jaw (so that you can see it yourself in the video: 0:26, 0:39, 0:50, 1:09, 1:15, 1:49, 2:42, 3:36), assuming that the video is from the same live audio recording, you have a tendency to push out or tense the lower jaw, noticeably more so on your forward vowels. It can seem like it's making singing easier in the short term, but really it's quite damaging to the chords because it heaps a lot of strain on them, and I just don't want you to end up with polyps or nodes because of it!
We've all got different facial structures, but if you want to find out what your own dropped jaw position is, just tilt your head all the way back, then rest your face as if you are sleeping with your mouth open, and hold that mouth shape as you tilt your head forward again.
For instance though, at 1:09, the reason why the jaw is coming forward is because you're trying to find a way to bring the resonance forward, but in the line before that - "time you're there" - the word 'time' is being resonated in the oropharynx (very back of the throat) and it's coming out through the nasopharynx (nasal cavity) which is dropping your soft palate quite a lot.
But when you come onto the word 'stay' in the next line, the soft palate is too low for the resonance to come forward on those AE and EE vowels, so your body is trying to compensate by pushing out that lower jaw.
Jaw doesn't need to come out though, it is easily corrected by opening and raising the soft palate for those two vowels again.
Hard to convey tone through writing but I mean it with all good intentions, not to be mean or anything! :)
@@AmberJays hi James! I appreciate your comment, and you’re right on point. Around the time that I filmed this (about a year and a half ago now), I was working on tension release in my articulators (lips, tongue, jaw, etc). I felt I had mastered (as much as any singer can master😁) breath control, but still felt tension. Working on releasing my articulators and allowing the breath to naturally flow worked wonders on the tension and disruption I felt. This is something I am still working on continuously as it is a big barrier to healthy singing. It’s crazy how small adjustments to our articulators actually disrupt our singing voices in such big ways.
I didn’t start taking voice lessons until I was 16, but I had been singing for years before that. Because I was so late to the game, I picked up on a lot of unhealthy habits just to get my voice out. While a lot of those have been squashed or worked on, there is still a lot to be done. I appreciate your comment and that you recognize the importance of healthy singing too. I literally just found this song today through Sarah Cothran's cover on Tiktok, and I was blown away by the notes and decided to find the original song, I didn't like it as much!
