  • Rolf Stommelen crash Montjuich 1975
    F1 - 1975 Montjuïc GP
"Unfortunately, Rolf Johann Stommelen inadvertently played a role in the end of the Spanish Grand Prix's tenure at Montjuich Park in Barcelona when he crashed there in the 1975 race after the rear wing of his Hill GH1 failed which caused his car to fly into the crowd, resulting in the deaths of five spectators and him being seriously injured."

The drivers were shocked by the poor condition of the track and wanted the race cancelled but were ordered to drive because of their contracts. Emerson Fittipaldi drove a few very slow laps in protest and quit. I cannot imagine what went through his mind when he saw the aftermath of Rolf Stommelen's tragic misfortune. Stommelen broke his legs in the accident.

not only because of their contracts. In case of a cancellation, the spanish military government threatened the teams with locking them up in the Montjuic stadium (which served as a Paddock) in case of a cancellation.

His rear wing came off and 5 spectators died in the ensuing crash. Stommelen retired in 1976 and died in 1983. You can just see his wing lift off the car as he moves out of shot.

I read that the struts supporting the rear wing were carbon fibre which was a novelty at the time.
The track was a very up and down layout and there are pictures of the cars jumping off the track at times like at the Flugplatz on the Nurburgring.
The jumps over stressed the wing supports and they failed on Rolfs car and he cleared the barrier killing some onlookers.
      Not good.

A rear wing failure is one of the scariest incidents a driver can have, as all of a sudden, the driver has no control of where the car ends up. Sadly, spectators paid the ultimate price in this case and Stommelen sustained a broken leg

I agree, but the spectators and photographers were standing in an exclusion zone at their own risk.

As the car flew high in the air it severed TV and phone cables and news of the tragedy only arrived at the pits 10 minutes later, at which time the Clerk of the course raised the Red Flag to terminate the event. Jochen Mass was awarded the win and given half points.

I remember seeing a pic of Ken Tyrrell out with a wrench tightening armco before the race. That’s how poorly organised it was. I hope the organisers had those people’s deaths on their conscience for the rest of their lives. Scandalous!!

His car took flight as it touched to side fender of Paces Brabham and hit the third rail of the barrier as it was rising. This caused the car to jump up higher and crash on the other side of the barrier after smashing into a lamp post breaking it into large, separate pieces.

Rolf Stommelen the driver who crashed due to rear wing failure recovered from his injuries and continued racing. He was killed in another crash in 1983 driving a Porsche 935 at Riverside in California. Ironically his fatal crash was caused by rear wing failure at 190 mph. The Porsche hit a concrete wall, somersaulted and caught fire, Rolf died from head and chest injuries in the massive impact.

Stommelens rear wing became completely separated from the car just at the beginning of the climb up to the Stadium jump and his car went wildly out of control as he crested, smashing into the right-side guard rail and rebounding across to the other side at 155mph!

Stommelen's car in 1975 went into a restricted area and four people died...NONE of them were spectators. Three of them were corner marshals and one was a photographer and all of them knew the risks of what they were doing!...That does not diminish the loss of life, but spectators were NOT involved and Rolf Stommelen was pretty badly injured!
