- After the Detroit Pistons only won 17 games last season we both thought there was no way a team this season would do worse than that. Fast forward to today and we have three teams on pace to win less than 17 games this season. In todays video we talk about tanking in the NBA and how it has gotten completely out of control.

No they’re definitely tanking, they are trading away big contracts and their most valuable assets to collect draft picks and are not trying to win games, idk what else you would call that

The GM and ownership made their team suck on purpose because they sell no tickets so they are turning every ounce of player value they have into draft picks so they can win 15 games and get a lottery ticket.

Some of these teams aren't even tanking. They just blow. I'm speaking as a Pistons fan, we didn't expect to win more than 35 games, but we weren't actively trying to do anything other than continue developing our young core.
Basically an evaluation year that yielded an answer of "blow it up". That's just too brutal.

I know nobody really watches the Wizards but Deni Avdija and Corey Kispert have been breaking out for them this year. At least give them some love
sad to say it but wizards were one of my teams to watch this year, not that I had any faith in them, I just wanted to see how Tyus could be the starting guard, but I didn’t realize it was going to fall apart so quick, Deni is a legit star, I’ve been a huge fan of his going into his draft year, it’s great he’s finally getting recognition

Tanking is how you build longterm sustainable success and how you build a contender. The teams that tank and fail are bad organizations that are just bad at drafting, if you nail on your picks, you can build a fanbase because people identify with those players.

You don’t want to end up like the kings for 16 years: barely being good enough to not tank, but not bad enough to pick generational talent. I know they had Boogie and IT, but Divac was in charge so winning was never an option.
The lottery causes teams to only view these two extremes (only winning or only losing) as profitable options for long term growth

I've heard a lot of people say that "Oh, American sports need relegation". But a lot of people need to understand that franchise owners here won't have the balls to do relegation and there's not enough teams to do that.
It's more of a money issue than anything. This is the best way to make money without too much risk

In Belgium (11M poeple) we got like 8 soccer divisions , America are just selfish and only support the best . Not saying players in our lower league's make big money but a system with relegations does work perfectly fine here
I've become convinced hat if you're gonna make your fans go through 3-5 years of being bad intentionally and you don't get a ring out of it, then it was a failure. I don't care if you contend for 10 years, if you sell a shitty product on purpose then you're not worth the benefit of the doubt or the "good moments" without a Championship.

For many teams tanking is the only way. Free Agents won't go to them but winners. Without tanking upside is like 7th seed aka getting trashed by top team and since its playoff team no high draft pick. In that only way to build is draft and for top picks you need top odds and for that you need to tank

Absolutely nothing you can do without MAJOR changes to how the league works. Tanking is here to stay bc no way the owners or players do anything about it.
For small market teams that can’t get big name free agents there’s only two options, be like the Pacers and constantly build towards the middle to then hopefully retool into a Championship roster when you nail a draft pick or trade, or tank

The Pistons aren't even tanking, they were trying to win games but kept losing nail-biters every single time.
The PWHL the new women’s hockey league has an interesting system for the draft lottery, pretty much once you are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs every win you get counts towards you draft ranking if you have the most “loser points” out of all of the eliminated teams you get to pick first. Would be a good way to keep eliminated teams competitive too as they are still fighting for something
Tanking is a game within the game. It's inherent and vital to the process.

Wizards are not tanking! I've watched them play, and they are playing really hard. They actually won the last 2 games. The Pistons aren't tanking. They can't win, because they are poorly constructed. All they do is quadruple-team Cade. I can't speak for the Spurs.

You have to tank to be competitive, and thats true in general but especially true today with how good so many teams are. You have multiple play in teams who could win the chip (if healthy). If you dont do a full, proper rebuild then you can build a good team but you'll never win a championship

Relegation is the best way to solve it honestly, that’s the only solution like it or not. The bottom 3 get dropped and top 3 from G League go up and also get the highest draft odds
That doesn’t make sense from a business perspective. Imagine the nba sending Wembanyama to the g league, even though the nba is clearly trying to set him up as a future face of the league. It also doesn’t make sense for individual organizations. Detroit, Washington, and San Antonio would lose their teams for a season in favor of three teams that are worse than them? NBA is different from Football leagues.
@@obi3924 the spurs really wanted to not be in the G league, they can do. Their position in the league right now isn’t true to their potential. Teams lose games on purpose, the Spurs isn’t that bad. If every team actually tried, you’ll be surprised how bad some teams are. And that’s just part of the game if he goes down, this will push him to want to get traded or not resign if his team doesn’t bring players who can keep him in the league. It has worked for over a century all over the world in other sports
@@obi3924 Yeah people who want relegation don't really comprehend the insane talent level gap btwn a bottom 3 NBA team and the best G-League teams compared to a lesser talent gap btwn the Prem League bottom feeder and the 2nd tier level in England. Also USA is also way more spread out geographical,all the big 4 sports don't really have more then a handful of new markets to enter. In England their were over 50+ clubs who averaged 10,000K fans a match in the 2022/2023 season and there is even more clubs who have arena's that hold a 10,-000 K + capacity that they would reach if they got into a higher division.

The Spurs I can live with considering that, yeah, we're still a young team, and by God, tanking is probably the only thing I can see in the future at the moment, but the Pistons are the antithesis of pure trash, and I love watching them fail
Part of the pistons issue is that they’re very unlucky. They drop in the lottery almost every year, and it’s gets compounded by the fact that they already don’t attract free agents. Dropping to 5 the last two years especially has hurt their current rebuild.

The only miss was Killian, and that was during the Covid year, where scouts didn’t have much opportunity to evaluate prospects, and we saw multiple busts in the top 10. Cade was the obvious number 1 pick. Jaden Ivey was considered a steal at 5. Duren was considered a steal at 12, and Ausar was considered a good pick at 5 in comparison to who else they could’ve taken at 5. But again, they keep dropping. The 5th pick sometimes isn’t enough for the worst team in the nba, with a small market.
FYI about Relegation and B-teams: If you were to be relegated, the Remix would need to drop to a lower tier
Relegation systems would fix tanking in American sports
If the league wants to eliminate tanking, they need to implement a hard cap. No more LA paying $200M in salary and another $200M in luxury taxes because they are loaded. Everybody gets $150M. You get a 10% discount on players who have been with the team for 2 or more seasons, 15% if you drafted them. Done. Smaller market teams just cannot compete with the salaries of larger teams, and so they have to tank to get talent, and especially talent that will hang around.
If the main team got relegated normally they also move the B team to a lower tier. So it really is a painful loss for the entire organization.
At least in football (I mean soccer).

american sports are motivated by entertainment cause thats what brings in money. a team isn't encouraged to tank for a long time because it will eventually bankrupt them. relegation would only upset fans of long time franchises leaving the league during a mad year and make the nba so much more toxic.

My brain immediately jumped to Anthony Bennett as the most recent #1 overall bust, but I think if we’re being honest, it’s gotta be Markelle Fultz. I know he got injured and sure, he hasn’t been nearly as bad as Bennett was and he looks like he’ll have a decent career as a backup pg, but he’s still a bust

The tanking this year makes no sense to me when you consider the draft class. There’s no Zion, Ant, or Wemby sitting at the top. At best the wizards, pistons, spurs are gonna pick a contributor who will get minutes while they tank next season for Cooper Flagg.
At this point the NBA should put a stipulation on the top 3 where if you land a top 3 pick the previous year, your odds are adjusted down for those positions in the draft.

I think at that point, Adam Silver would have to step in and adjust the lottery odds, because it’d be crazy for a team to have the worst record two years in a row and drop to 5 both years. I understand the nba wants to dissuade tanking, but they went too far. The pistons aren’t even tanking. They’re just bad, and they don’t attract free agents because they’re a small market. The lottery is pretty much the only hope they could have for becoming a good team. This is the whole point of why the lottery system was created in the first place.

I think a part of it is the concentration of talent in the NBA right now. Combined with player movement, it means the good teams are REALLY good and the bad teams are REALLY bad.

The draft system in US sports is like socialism in the most capitalistic country on earth, while soccer in the rest of the world is free market capitalism on steroids. The richest teams in Europe buy the best players, end of story....Now while US fans of tanking teams might get pissed off at watching a full blown tanking, there is always the chance that they land on a future genius in the draft or trade, transforming the fortune of the franchise... On the other side there are European soccer fans who know that the chances of their hometown club ever winning anything during their lifetimes, bar some kind of miracle or multi billionaire saviour, is zero.
