  • I FINALLY got my certificate online for TEFL English Teaching, and I have. a TON of thoughts on it. The site I used, how much I paid, and frankly, is it even worth it over another kind of English Teaching Certificate? I answer all these and more in this week's video!

      Hi , I just arrived in Japan and I would like to be an English teacher. Do you have any tips?

    • @VoylinsLife
      @VoylinsLife Před rokem +12

      @@jmtrogneux The only advice I can give you is to not become an English teacher unless you want to be treated like trash and fall into a depression ^^"
      I did have fun being an English teacher, but only the teaching and kids part, the moment that it came to the workplace, managers, company rules, colleagues, ... quite a poisonous environment. Unless you can work for a real school you'll have less of a bad time I guess, but those after school places are ... apparently I was in one of the better ones ^^"
      If you can, try to get into a real school or start your own English teaching business (That's what a lot of foreigners do to avoid bad working conditions here). Sorry that my tips aren't really great. If you just want tips to become an English teacher here, if you speak English and look motivated, you'll get hired no matter how bad you think your interview went. Because of their bad working conditions they are always looking for new people as people keep leaving after 1 or 2 years.

      @youknowkbbaby Not as simple as you can just start. You need to do planning (or course, just like when starting a business anywhere else). You need to make a big investment financially, have your own actual location where you'll work from and hire at least 2 people. These are the general guidelines, better check how to visa system works. If a visa is not a problem (wife is Japanese by example so you have a spouse visa) than you can basically get yourself a location and start your school without needing to have 2 Japanese employees.
      Really depends on your visa, but you can start nearly any business here rather easily, even as a foreigner. But again, really depends on your situation/visa and this is by no means legal advice. If you are serious about starting your own business here in Japan you better get in touch with a lawyer or something to figure out the legal stuff.
      Short answer: Yes, Japan gives people permission to start an English teaching business. If you comply with some of the prerequisites.

    Just to bring some reality into this, most job postings require a bachelors degree. I'm currently working on completing my certificate and it seems they make it especially long and difficult so that you have to pay for extensions. $75 for a month. The assignments are graded by an actual person who can dictate the pace. I had 7 written assignments in my first task and they make sure you follow a strict word count. With word limitations you are forced to leave out essential information. They can ask you to redo assignments if they are unsatisfactory. You also don't get the opportunity to ask about the written assignments leaving you to guess and hope for the best. If it weren't for this, it would have been a better experience. I hope this helps.

    wow! i'm really glad you're going to russia and i hope you'll be enjoying yourself here)
    although winter and early spring isn't the best time to visit, with some guidance you'll have lots of fun) i'm sure your friend will tell you what to expect and how to be prepared but here're some hints from me:
    if you're going to Moscow in Jan and if the weather at that time will be like it was in the last two years - grey, wet and brrrrrr, please-please bare in mind that it's far more beautiful in May)
    if you're going to Saint Petersburg, please try to stay away from the roofs of old building with their icicles)
    oh, and take the shoes that are warm but you wouldn't mind ruining them - in winter to get rid of slipery roads some cities use chemicals to dissolve ice and if you're going to walk a lot you might have white stains on your boots that are hard to remove. i'm not sure if they're doing it in Saint Petersburg but they're sure do it in Moscow)
    there're more cozy and unique cafes/restorants in SP but you can find a good place in Moscow as well)
    I hope you'll be lucky and it would be christmasy weather while you're staying and there would be lots of good memories made in Russia) cheers :)

      You don't need a TEFL at all, but you 100% need a bachelor's degree for Japan :) If you don't have a bachelor's degree your chances are near 0 sadly.
