ANGEL Hernandez STRIKES Again

  • Angel Hernandez recently threw out Lance Lynn out of a spring training game twice. The first time he threw him out because he was complaining about a call, and the second time he threw him out of the bullpen for not actually leaving the game. He also threw out the Cardinals manager who started to complain. Now, this is typical Angel Hernandez behavior, I just didn't expect it to start up so soon. What do you think about the situation?

      @hlcepeda Před 3 měsíci +7

      It's not a sandlot pick-up game. MLB likely have rock-solid stipulations that contractually prevent players from refusing to play. Way too much money involved: MLB; networks; the cities and private entities that own the stadiums; and the advertisers. Heck. Have you ever seen how (understandably) pissed off many of the players look and act (quickly turning away; ducking behind others; disgustedly looking into the camera pointed at them... then spitting) when the network turns their cameras on them when they're in the dugout? They hate it... but they have no choice. MLB wants cameras in the dugout and up the players' butts for the viewership, to make things more interesting. The players know that... and where their multi-million-dollar deals come from.

Put him at 3rd base every game where he can't screw up nearly as often and let the other 3 rotate. Or maybe the Union would fight that, too. Who knows? The only umpire who I have ever seen worse is Eric Gregg, who was so bad that MLB refused to rehire him after the union went on strike. He was the lone exception.

    I’m not saying Angel Hernandez is a bad ref, but he recently complained to his doctor that both his strikes were hurting. Then he threw the doctor out for arguing they were clearly balls.

    Hernandez, 57, has plenty of reasons to keep umpiring. Now in his 26th year, he earns a base salary of $400,000; with 30 years of service time, he would jump to $430,000, the current top step on the pay grid.

    If I was pitching I would bank on his erratic strike zone and throw a high hard fast ball to Hernandez's face, chances are even if it misses, it would probably be a strike.

    A few years ago, I was sitting behind the plate just a few rows off the field at loanDepot Park for a Mets-Marlins game. Hernandez had home plate that day, and although he called a pretty good game, I was jawing at him for every questionable call, and serenading him with “Three Blind Mice” between innings. I’m waiting for the day Hernandez tosses a fan out of the ballpark (I was daring him to do so) for similar behavior.

    I watched two MLB games on a Saturday over a decade ago. One had Hernandez, the other featured Bucknor. I was so disgusted by their horrifically bad performance, and the clear fact that they were far more interested in being the center of attention that officiating a fair game, that I decided then and there to not watch MLB ever again until they got rod of the worst of their officials. It's been a lot of years since, and I've not invested a minute of watching any MLB game on TV, and haven't been to a live game in all that time. I used to attend 4-5 live games/year, and watched dozens on TV. I'm guessing MLB's treatment of Hernandez and his ilk have cost them billions in lost fans over the years.

    Angel Hernandez actually had the audacity to sue MLB for not allowing him to call playoff games on the grounds that MLB was discriminating against him for his Cuban background. Thankfully the judge for this case threw it out because there wasn’t enough evidence to support this claim. Did Angel Hernandez ever stop to think that MLB knows how bad he is at being an umpire? Maybe not since MLB continues to allow him to umpire games

    With all due respects, kicking him out of the pen was a BS move that if I were the Cards I'd be writing to the league to raise serious concerns - not like Lynn is going out to the pen for milk & cookies, he's going out there to stretch the arm out ahead of the season. Should also be said that I don't care how "powerful" the union is, Magoo could see the guy's the worst ump in the game by a long ways, when you underperform for THAT long it's time to issue marching papers.

    Managers, of both teams, need to refuse to let their players leave the dugout at the beginning of the game (enough to affect television airing - which will cost $$$ for the network) if he is behind the plate or at first base. Every player (batter and pitcher) needs to argue balls and strikes and get thrown out of the game. When 40 or so players start getting thrown out of the game every time he umps, things will change. Fans need to throw beer bottles at him if he approaches home plate. You can't throw ALL the fans out of the stadium. Catchers need to let a 104 mph fastball "pass" into his chest or head, Oops. Repeat. Repeat.
    Be like Gov. Abbott of TEXAS and think outside the box. If enough money WALKS, so will the ump.
