  • The Empire had crawlers, like the Sandcrawler used by the Jawas, on all sorts of scale from the small TIE Century, TIE ap-1, PX-4 Mobile Command Base, Imperial Crawler Tank of the Sith Empire, and one of the few tracked TX-225

That's the problem with dictatorships. Papa Palpatine was a politician and a Sith in the tail end of a thousand years of peace. He was no General, yet, as the Emperor, he had final say on things he had no business deciding on. He was all about strategy and fear and knew little about tactics and logistics.
Palpatine always wanted the "visually intimidating" stuff and "Instilling fear in the very SOULS of my enemies." nonsense. Intimidation rarely lasts past the first couple of blows. Either the enemy resolves to either fight or surrender or to feign surrender and dismantle from the inside.

    • @undraftedboomer5055

@@taitano12 I think you downplay the Empire a little too much. Almost every vehicle and ship they had was well designed in its dedicated role, but it was the way they were used, especially in the early years is what screwed them over.
It was the chain of command growing increasingly green. Tarkin was onto something, he wasn't stupid. His whole life he saw the effects of fear. It can definitely be a weapon.
The ISD was a flagship designed for the Republic's needs during the clone wars. It practically denied the early rebels from fielding their capital ships. But the escort fleet (18 ships) was often spread too thin on patrol.
Without that exhaust port design flaw, the Death Star would've been unstoppable. Fear IS an effective way to quiet the galaxy, and the Imps had plans for a Death Star in every sector.
The ATAT was a very effective assualt and ranged artillery platform. It was never meant to be unescorted or used in urban environments, and most legends Imp vehicles were actually really smart and well designed.
The TIE fighter was loud and scary, yes. But it was the perfect balance of affordability, maintainability, and combat effectiveness (for the first 20 or so years of the Empire). It could combat Pirates and smugglers no problem, and TIE pilots were exceedingly well trained.
After Peace officially turned into war, the Empire was unchained. Imp battlegroups had their escorts and carriers. This, along with Improved TIE models and more gunships made the fight more than even.
But by now the NR was far bigger than a group of snub fighters. Their Navy was becoming more modern and well equiped than the Empire's, their pilots, soldiers, and officers had tangibleexperience, and they had some of the best military minds.
Imperial Arrogance was definitely a thing, and it was the only reason the rebels got a foot in the door. But by the middle of the fight, the Imps had, for the most part, gotten their act together. The Galactic Civil War was a much tighter battle for freedom than you think.

In legends, both the Imps and the Rebels truely had some of the more practical and/or realistic ground vehicles in SW. Always loved this era of vehicle and ship design. Only other place you sort of see this is with the CIS. Great vid Meta, always thought the PX4 was a floating fortress on tracks.

Tracked vehicles have always been my favorite in sci-fi, shame the Empire didn't like the genius design philosophy behind it. The Tie Mauler and Tie Crawler are noteworthy ones I like, even if they are silly designs using the TIE as a base.

    Hey metanerdz,
I noticed something neat, the px-4 concept art looks really close to an unarmed saint charmont ww1 french tank wich later in that war got used as self propelled artillery... thus the px-4's movement can be kinda interprited like the saint charmont since there is one still running in a french museum but got moved to the uk once of twice for an event called tankfest if i recall correctly...(maybe an interesting addition for this video or perhaps yt short as a kind off part 2 for this video😉)

I am sure there could be a whole host of tracked vehicles that aren't seen because they are more niche. Seeing as they made a submersible out of an AT-AT and the TX-225 had both a repulsorlift and tracked variant. The Saber-class assault tank spawned a decent sized family of variants, and I wouldn't be surprised to learn that a tracked version was counted somewhere in it's number. The company Yutrane-Trackata also produced the T3-B and T4-B tanks for the Rebels, as well as the chassis on which the MZ-8 was based on.

  • @ariabritton9669
    @ariabritton9669 Před 3 měsíci

of the VERY few things i liked from the sequel trilogy, one of them had to be the tread-bikes. (idk what their lore name is though) they looked rather menacing, and they would seem to be more resilient than a speeder bike. however it's hard to tell because they make rey a ma-rey-sue, so of course she ends up one-shotting them by throwing a rope into the treads which somehow makes them malfunction.

Honestly I think all designs have their role. I mean I like AT-ATs simply because they don't need waste laser cannon energy on every single hazard or obstacle the enemies have. While fast repulsor craft are really good either flanking the enemy or harassing the enemy in other areas. Like the imperial hover transports might not be great at assault an enemies fortified hq. However what they can do is attack the enemies outposts and lines of communication as well as deal with enemies own scouting patrols if you have the element of surprise and then further lengthen said time period of surprise. Quick lightly armoured units are just great for that. Attacking the enemies lesser defenses as well as means to communicate with each other. if the enemy can't hear back from scouting teams its harder for them to get a picture and react to enemy attack. while your own commando raiders or advance force troops can start gain intel feeding it back to the battlefield commander in real time.
From their they can find a suitable location to deploy walkers, track and or wheeled vehicles making up the main assault force while a portion of smaller walkers like at-sts and at-pts as well as light tracked tanks cans with smaller trooper carries can then secure captured terroritory as well said captured smaller outposts in which additionally light forces could be deployed secure the area as well as harass the enemy. And by the time the main assault force, shows up with heavy walkers like AT-ATs, and these heavy tracked tanks as well maybe even some Juggernauts your enemy will already be scatered in its attention that by the time see they the main force its pracitcally on top of their base. Plus AT-ATs are good for getting through energy shield barriers if for some reason some tracked or wheeled tanks might struggle not that would but just all these vehicle types have their roles and used effectively as well as supporting each other it can be very power force to stop even without facting in air support.

the at at wouldnt break the shields for hover units. they would have to be perfectly positioned to cross the threshold the same exact time the legs do. the head of the at at wouldnt enable anything below that height to enter the shield unimpeded. nothing in animation is concrete in any universe

The idea of hover vehicles in SF, even for some animal-drawn vehicles, is ridiculous in strategic terms. Militaries use vast amounts of equipment, it's not like some sort of small group of anime or super sentai warriors that have small amounts of superior weapons to almost anything in the galaxy and only take a single episode to take down the alien villains latest attack that makes the planet's army look like a bunch of airsofters who forgot that their weapons were toys. Consequently, the equipment looks great and mighty but was made by the lowest bidder. And the lowest bidder probably wasn't using hovering designs.
The tech base will be easier and cheaper to build up, too; which leads to my theory that anyone using tanks after the apocalypse will be using things like the T-55, for the same reason that it is THE tank in Africa - while more modern tanks wipe the floor with them, they can be maintained by a tech base that simply cannot provide parts support for an M1A1.
The only reason tracked vehicles are rarely seen in Star Wars would be logistics, in the form of spare links and wheels; but, yeah right, like a Galactic Empire hasn't got that sorted already.
