Pogacar did that to himself when he almost came to a stop, rather than go early. He slowed down so much that he didn’t have the momentum to keep the other two riders behind him in the final sprint. What an incredible finish!

@@dryter Yep. Pog was riding for 2nd at best as soon as he didn't drop MDP on the Paterberg. There was no way he could take the sprint from MVDP, even if Mathieu had led out the sprint from the front. Remember 2 years ago that a fit WVA couldn't come around MVDP when Mathieu led out from the front.
The best Pog could have done is attack with 1k to go and hope to get a gap and TT it home. He would have still likely ended up second, but at least he would have had a podium.

He caused every major selection on climbs himself. If he develops a team that can get guys in moves so he can just really conserve energy he obviously goes on these cobbled climbs at quite a pace led out last several. Had vdp in gutter on patterberg he got out and on wheel with guts sprinted with strength overhead view he was losing it 1v1 regardless to mvdp giving up first wheel was tough call but he can't lead mvdp out in sprint damned either way but strongest two should have been on top two steps mvdp followed on all the final climbs as tadej caused selections got gap ,they seem friendly, but from first wheel vdp will regret not just beating pogacar straight up as pogacar raced him on climbs. Tadej has only himself to blame but he was so locked in on racing vdp to line don't think he expected vdp allowing him to get boxed. He said after race " he was the strongest, maybe he needs to sprint more in these races" long season probably poor choice considering how close they seemed at tour. If he's going for green doesn't need to burn bridge with pogacar. Might gladly see that go to someone else as of today I'm sure. Maybe set pace Wout can climb and not Mathieu. Got chopped a bit too not relegation worthy but not what he deserved again he's as much but you saw how he led out Lombardia being better sprinter think he expected same. Just not 4th

Hanging on to Pogacar by a knife's edge up Paterberg (650 Watts for a minute, maxed out heart rate at 187bpm), he hit 1400 Watts for three seconds and held more than 1000 Watts for another seven seconds in the sprint to leave everybody in the dust. MVDP had nothing but respect for Pogacar as do I. Tough racer who, like most in the pro peloton, would be playing a weak hand in a two-up sprint with MVDP. Absolutely spot on, VDP was winning sprint regardless this wasn't colbrelli or even asgreen size power wise, when you have built the lead on the climbs attrition was his only shot he needed to keep pace up even last 10 k's were too slow I thought nevermind last k for tadej and take first wheel hed been there for 50 k. I honestly think MVDP just getting back on Patterberg was the race with that 10 k's left he is so much bigger and stronger Tadej should have gone from longer range and hoped he cramped basically exactly what asgreen did VDP had to follow on all the final climbs he had to just push on and trust his condition not a drag race. Thought It was shame VDP left it that late wasn't necessary he got there on tadejs wheel on climbs clearly gapped him from overhead shot in sprint they should be steps 1-2 on podium. Lesson learned for tadej maybe bridge burned for mvdp never seen Tadej angry they have always seemed friendly admirable at races of each other. Might be different this year at tour no hugfest:) Think we all learned tadej can win all monuments even if he never wins another. Hes gone win, win, 5th, 4th from last year to this roubaix he excels at races with extra 100k

He even gave MvdP 5m gap in the last KM. You don't do that if you want to win. Mathieu is a cyclocrosser. All those races start with a 300m sprint out of the pack. This is what he does best at the long distances. Your only chance is to use him as a leadout and pray you have the legs to come around.

@counselthyself I don't think he had legs I just think he wanted a 1v1 sprint and inside last kilometer (which is why he was upset vdp saw what was coming) his instinct to look for win and weakness when there was none ....cost him podium. I think if he kept pace on after patterberg even solo effort from 2k what's worst cooperation stops ...happened anyway and he gets on podium in honest sprint of that group of 4 comes together anyway I think so just stuffed it not accepting he couldn't win after racing so well that has to suck it's Flanders and even MVDP said tadej was strongest on the day. Lots of things have gone his way im sure his day will come he looks amazing in every race with extra 100k/monument was smoothest on cobbles who thought that would be case? Always climbs great but body moved less than MVDP on pave. His team will get better trentin was solid but he needs team in moves allowing him to conserve energy.

@@manydman yeah he knew he wasn;t winning sprint unless MVDP cramped with way run in went over head of sprint confirmed that, but to let him get boxed in and even chopped a bit after leading out last 5 climbs with him right in the wheel never complaining or backing off I think MVDP will eventually realize makes sense to have other strongest rider in race on podium next to him. Tadej has himself to blame and won't make same mistake again but im sure was expecting something similar to what he did in lombardia except MVDP to lead out being bigger stronger finisher like he was in Italy. Last 4 monuments in succession for the kid win, win, 5thMSR, 4th today so pretty solid:) always better to have allies than enemies on the road. Especially ones with really good legs. They were all hugs and fist bumps at last years tour. Never seen tadej mad ever after a race and he has lost gold medals, plenty of monuments and sprints already even basque country mugging. Pog has no one to blame but himself for that dumb, junior mistake. To allow the chasers to catch you and beat you to the line because you're too stubborn to take a turn at the front is just a stupid mistake. But given how MVDP accelerated from essentially a standstill to catch up to the speed of the chasers and still beat them shows that Pog would have not stood a chance regardless of his mistake. Well done MVDP.

First time to see Pogacar make such a big mistake. Am sure there will be lots of tough talks in his camp this week about strategy, support etc. No doubt he was the rider of the day in every move except the one that mattered most. I personally don't think he could beat MVP in a 2-up sprint, but to end up 4th is just crazy. Might as well have pulled up and chatted to the fans at that point! Guaranteed he will go on to crush the TdF now.

Today certainly won the man in condition of the moment in the group, but I don't think he would have won that easy if the belgian idol Van Aert hadn't stopped him from COVID19.
Van Der Poel was very clever, playing with a pinch of mischief because he knew he was the fastest even against Pogacar: he waited for Van Baarle and Modouas to come from behind, keeping them behind until the finish line, but for a moment at 200 final meters I thought that Van der Poel applied the theory of: "today I don't win but neither do you!"
