You can steam it, just make sure to cover the lid with some cloth or anything similar, so the steam air will not fall into the food, it will make the ingredients you cook wetter

Honestly, "mochi" means something chewy, so the filling or topping is additional, there is even type of mochi that you adding to savoury soup, it called Kiri Mochi, and it plain
