Why Warcry Worked and Kill Team Didn't

  • Warcry and Kill Team are both great skirmish games. But one has seen tremendous repeat play at our table, and the other has fallen by the wayside. Why did Warcry succeed for us while Kill Team didn't?

    I am a big fan of Warcry. I played the original Kill Team but by the time the second edition came out, I had started playing Star Breach and Space Weirdos, both mini agnostic games with cheap or free rules. I haven't gone back to Kill Team.

      I've been interested in Five Leagues (Five Parsecs) and Space Weirdos but haven't given them a try yet.

    Helpful, ty. Trying to decide which one to jump into. Warcry definitely sounds better for dipping my toes in.

      Warcry is simpler for sure. And, in our opinion, more enjoyable.

    As someone else with a kid Warcry wins without a doubt. There isn't an attention span to dig into kill team.

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I picked up the kill-team octarius set but just couldn't make it work. I regularly play 40k, but the fantasy side of warhammer is calling out to me, and I think war cry would be a good way to get my kids in to tabletop games

    • @battleready7214

    If kill team was more streamlined like warcry it would be legit.
    That's what people were hoping for with the leaks before the mew edition dropped.
    The bespoke warbands in warcry are the second largest seller for me. The models came out stellar

    • @battleready7214
      @battleready7214  Před 10 měsíci +1

    • @blkjet117

      It's the rules and how each figure has it's own special abilities. Warcry streamlines and makes the special abilities, work quickly and easily. Kill Team would benefit tremendously if they used the Warcry system, I would get into Kill Team in a heartbeat.

    • @battleready7214
      @battleready7214  Před 8 měsíci

      @@blkjet117 That's true. In Kill Team basically every operative is unique. But in Warcry, you usually end up with a few that have the same abilities. So less to remember.

    What is an example of a 'twist' in Warcry?

    • @battleready7214
      @battleready7214  Před 4 měsíci +1

      There are a ton. But a recent one from Hunter and Hunted is "Inimical Enzymes." At the start of each battle round after the first, each fighter on the floor takes d3 damage. So it encourages you to make use of terrain.

    • @lystic9392
      @lystic9392 Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@battleready7214 The floor is lava! Cool. That gives me a bit of an idea of what that's like. When you said twist I got really curious.

    • @battleready7214
      @battleready7214  Před 4 měsíci +1

      @lystic9392 Yeah. They are randomized and each one adds an extra (fairly simple) rule for that play. Some are more impactful than others, but they are pretty much all fun.

    I think the point the gentleman in the blue shirt made, rings true with me the most. Kill Team has similar complexity to 40k, just with less models. For example, you still have around 10 different "units". I feel like 10th edition combat patrol is much simpler than Kill Team. Warcry has less of that complexity and rules bloat.

    • @battleready7214
      @battleready7214  Před 9 měsíci

      I couldn't agree more! We've been playing a little bit of combat patrol recently and I've been enjoying it wayyyy more than kill team.

  • @vmarshall2799
    @vmarshall2799 Před rokem +3

    I started with KT and enjoy it, never tried warcry. One note - you said that in kill team, every unit has a unique profile. That's in the previous edition, which is KT 2, which came out in 2018. In KT 3 (2021), teams are broken up into smaller "fireteams" which have more repeating units with similar profiles. I heard that Kt2021 is similar to warcry mechanics, and anyway, I think KT2021 is the best edition thus far. You should give it a shot if you havent tried the new edition yet. I recommend the octarius terrain for unique matched scenarios; its some of the best kt has ever offered.
    Might try warcry though, since i have tzaangors from KT i can use

    • @battleready7214
      @battleready7214  Před rokem +1

      Thanks! I was talking about Octarius and the specific teams that came with it. I've only used the Octarius and Chalnath teams. I know you can bring 40k models and make different teams, but I've only used the bespoke ones.
      And Kill Team is a fine game. It's not "bad" and has a lot of good to it. But it just wasn't for us.

      Maybe I will! I'd be interested to see how they did it. We did a couple of Warcry battle reports a few years back but they were awkward to film, didn't turn out great, and overall made the play experience less fun. Thanks!

    My family loves Warcry for a quick "beer and pretzels" game that we can play multiple games and simply have fun without having to sweat too hard.
    My son (17 y/o) and I play Kill Team when we want to get REALLY tactical and spend hours playing out one match, agonizing over every move.
    Warcry is for laughs and having fun, Kill Team is for competing.

    • @battleready7214
      @battleready7214  Před 4 měsíci

      That's a good breakdown. Though I think there's probably a little more strategy to Warcry than implied. Still, no denying that Kill Team is far crunchier.

    • @wtfserpico
      @wtfserpico Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@battleready7214 There certainly is strategy in Warcry, but it's all on the fly and you end up winging most of the time based on how the cards set the game up, and it's not required to think tactically first-and-foremost to have a shot at winning.
      One bad move in TP1 can cost you a game of Kill Team. You'd really have to pull some shenanigans for the same to happen in Warcry in my experience.
      With all of that being said, there's a reason that we play easily 5x as much Warcry as we do Kill Team, because the "fun" in Warcry is much easier to access.
