  • Money is a commodity. Like oil or water. And that American dollar, is the best brand there is in the world. Those of us who have it. Can make more of it. By loaning it to those who dont.
Julian Beck, as banker J. J. Johnstone, Miami Vice, Prodigal Son, 1985.
Died of cancer of the stomach, two weeks before the episode aired.

Julian Beck was an amazing actor. It's too bad he didn't do more mainstream stuff. His voice is mesmerizing.

Classic scene from "Prodigal Son". Will always remember this scene with Julian Beck, but in a way he's almost telling the story of American Capitalism. "When the US sneezes everybody catches a cold!"..I guess it happened in 2008.

That background music that starts at the :40 mark, I used to hear it all the time during the first 3 seasons. I even find myself humming that when watching modern cop shows (ex. SVU and CSI). Julian Beck is actually pretty creepy in this scene. He's saying "It's nothing personal, it's just business that you happened to get in the way of." Sometimes, those with deepest pockets are the cruelest.

I've seen a lot of great actors, but very few people who can act as well as Julian Beck. That guy instantly commands attention in any scene he's in. As far as I'm concerned, the stage and the screen lost an irreplaceable giant when that man passed away.

If MV would have kept this same formula of C and T equal partnership, this show would have stayed on for atleast 10 years. But starting in the 3rd season. Tubbs screen time and swag was reduced , and the storylines were more centered more on how they affected Crockett. I love DJ, but for the shows long term success , Tubbs needed to be a central figure as well, not a background player.

I think you're right. The swag was gone and instead he had the well-trimmed beard, and Crockett spent more time in therapy. What a mess.

This was the best TV show there ever was. There were so many actors who later went on to be big-name people it's silly. This show was a stepping stone for these actors of the time and most of them went on to be notable if not high-profile actors.
Unfortunately, most of the main crew of Miami Vice weren't so fortunate, although I don't know why. But oddly that's how the industry seems to work much of the time. I know Don Johnson certainly didn't have the movie career he hoped he would afterward.

  • @affordthis

Wow, Just today Elizabeth Warren was grilling the U.S. Treasury about laundering bank money to drug cartels and how nobody gets prosecuted for it. It made me think of this. The more things change, the more things stay the same. Now I know what they mean by that saying. Miami Vice was and still is my favorite show of all time. They were ahead of their time

the 80's, good old days, majority of the people (as usual) did not knew nor cared were warned/explained how Banksters (intelligent greedy psychopaths) get or got what they want, at any cost, because of the system (Those of "us" who have it, can make more of it, by loaning it to those who don't), that creates money from nothing, and is in private hands (against the constitution for those who read). Today 2011, Still to many people refuse to learn or simly ignore what keeps us in debt.
