Finally someone runs these bailers to their fullest capacity. The 4955 is all mechanical that’s why it’s loading/smoking when the plunger is hitting. They all do it.

The 4955 hits the nostalgic buttons... all that heart aside, the newer tractor gets the job done with less fuel and less wear/tear. Hurts me to see a machine run at its maximum for hours and hours. We used to run two 4755's on 12 row corn planters.. sold them in 1997 for 8400's. The newer 8400 one was a lot better tractor in various ways. Thanks for sharing this great video!

I don't know why, or what it is exactly about it, but the 4955 has to be the best, coolest looking vintage-ish tractor going. Old Case's are a super close second but there's just something about the 4955 especially with some nice, super wide tires on it. Ooof.

That technology stopped with the 4960 and the revolutionary 8000 series took command as the flagship row-crop tractors of the world!! Today's 15 models of the 8R series are topped by the mighty 410 horsepower offerings! First is the 8R 410, with rubber tires.. Then there is the 8RT 410 with twin rubber tracks.. And last, but certainly not least, is the mightiest of them all, the 8RX 410 with quadruple rubber tracks!! And, yes, every one of 8000 series ever built is capable of farming in the rows!!

The 8430 is rated t 305 continuos and 250 PTO HP The 4955 is rated 225 engine hp. But I think this one has been tweaked just a little bit. It was not uncommon that they pulled in the neighbourhood of 230-240 PTO hp. - With some more smoke out the pipe. You can also hear that it has a slightly "hysterical" exhaust note. A clear indication that the pump limit have been turned ½ to a full revolution. But it - is still the old VP pump engine, so it is a little down on torque compared to the newer common rail diesel in the 8430. Back in the days the 4955/60 tractors were hard to beat in the field

So what are we looking at here to bale some hay?? Over $1 million per tractor and baler packaged together?? Or dammed close. So at that price that thing better be working ALL SUMMER LONG NONSTOP. And if you can't do that and keep it "fed" you don't need that setup. It's nice to look at especially when it's working. But OH that price tag. That would bum me out even if I could afford it...

sure its quite some money. that's why they are baling that fast.
An ag contractor gets paid per bale made(atleast where i come from) they have to push as many as fast as possible through, against the wether and competitors that's why they want to drive good maintained up to date(expensive) machinery. because money makes money.
As i am an dairy farmer, i like to have an contractor that gets the job done with reliable machinery. i dont want someone with pieces of crap that break down alot. or dont go fast enough when my silage is drying out, or rain is on the way. that just costs me money and an customer for him.

This 4955 needs the governor 'desensitized'! These tractors were built with the minimum droop physically possible with the mechanical governors of the day, resulting in jumpy PTO operation!!

@@mardukyakovlev6936 , because I wanted to reply to each commenter that thought the 4955 was showing its might by puffing smoke on every plunger stroke of the baler! There is damage being done to that tractor, and possibly the baler, by continuing operating with the governor droop so sensitive! This problem occurred with the later mechanical governed, inline injection pumps. The early 8000s, with their electronic governing, would exhibit the same smoke puffs on big balers if the governor droop was set at minimum. A simple change of an address in the control unit for the PTO smoothened out the governing. The later 8000s, such as the second baler tractor, had the ability to adapt automatically to the load characteristics by electronically changing the governor droop to fit the operation..
Both of the tractors in the video have more than enough horsepower to operate these balers at the speed they were traveling!

If ever you’ve seen a diesel loco start up from a stop and I do t mean cold start, you can see when they get loaded up because they will smoke. It’s just the turbo playing catch up on the load like on a loco. It’s what’s known as turbo lag it lags behind a bit. It doesn’t cause damage to the engine. I wouldn’t say it’s water. The engine would suffer damage and wouldn’t run.

@@few_tv_dk9674 , I stated the factory observed horsepower as shown in the tractor specifications.. What you are hearing is possible by over fueling the engine.. This is done by breaking the factory seals on the injection pump and adjusting the fuel delivery higher than stock!! I would question the ability to produce 515 horsepower with a stock fuel injection pump.. That's over double the factory setting!! Most generally, the maximum fuel delivery achievable won't exceed much more than 30% of the factory setting..
The 7.6 litre Deere engine is capable of producing 2 to 3 thousand horsepower for Super Stock tractor pulling.. This can only be done with extensive modifications to many of the factory components.. That 8330 tractor's 9.0 litre engine has exceeded 4000 horsepower in tractor pulling!! (about the only part of the engine that is actually used is the block!!)
