At first I was like this is a big gimmick However thinking more and more about it if we can flash it those lights would be a really good way to trigger specific notifications from HA
You could do all sorts. For bedtime timers, room temperature indicator to intercom bells etc. It's a great idea in my mind. All we need is a custom control over it. You could also use the colours and animation to switch control layouts

Is that they are using the resistance without a neutral?
Something of this sort with 2-3 sliders, being UL (or at least ETL/TUV) listed, and zigbee would be great for a home assistant programmable widget. Especially in new construction one wouldn't need any complicated switch wiring, just wire to lights, one wire to switch, then handle it all in software. Would be an issue for resale, but meh :D
Edit: I guess RGBGenie RGBW Remote is what I'd want, but hardwired on a wall...
There are literally hundreds of smart switches out there, some have swipe functions, depending on price point. If you are building your own new place, you coudl specify to use any one of the smart switch options. Smart switches will not be a default install for general construction for a long time because there are just too many ecosystems, some quite locked down, and at this stage, home automation is still a relatively niche market.
That all said, I am a nerd and love this stuff and honestly, this size is based on the standard UK/EU square wall plate and it would be easy to retrofit a switch. I would like to see them release this in a No Neutral version. Aeotec can do it with their Nano Dimmers and wall plates, so it should be achievable from a technical perspective. For a lot of people removing a wall switch and retrofitting may be beyond their knowledge or comfort zone, so they'd get a sparky in. For us that are comfortable, retrofitting these switches is a pretty easy task as long as you have a neutral at the switch for the current iteration of it.

Would anyone know or could you guess if this light switch could be paired with the Fibaro Dimmer 2?. I am thinking this Sonoff 3 x gang switch can handle the smart on/off switch on one gang, and the other 2 x gangs could trigger the Fibaro dimmer to dim up and down?. I know it wouldnt be cheap but should it work?
When can we expect a video of you showing us how to flash it as I cant find how to initiate the boot
Can you find buttons in the dark? With that I mean: can you slide/search a button without looking and then when pressing, it wil react with a certain force? The problem with touch buttons is the they activate when slightly touched.
It should have some kind of force sensor
You could just map slide gestures to do that directly and set them to be active at night.

Tasmota flashing is new to me.. If I flash this to Tasmota and then use Tuya-Convert to flash my Tuya devices to Tasmota would they then play nice together and allow me to link the power on & off and swipe left & right to my Tuya ceiling fans so the power on & off turns the light on and the swipe left & right changes the fan speeds?
Yes. If all devices have custom firmware then you can use these together. It would be either via REST requests or MQTT.

Would love a dimmable version of this. Can the swipe actions be used to adjust brightness of the sonoff D1?
You could use these to set 2 brightness values. I wish more devices supported dimming. I settled for light control and then smart bulbs in my lamps for more subdued evening lights.

Dimming is hard. Not from hardware perspective but from compatibility stand point. It was easier on incandescent bulbs but with LEDs every company has their own way of making LEDs work and that's hard without making a smart bulb
@@notenoughtech if you can but a rotary dimmer that is LED compatable (trailing edge) I can't see why we can't do this with smart switches. Would be great if they could merge the D1 with the MINI
Because each time a customer gets the "dimmable" bulb that isn't compatible with a switch they would blame the switch for it. It's just a bad overall customer experience and a risky business.

can I ask why you'd need a power monitor? Generally lights have a fixed power usage.
These kinds of switches look really cool, but I'm not sure I would like them when fumbling to find the right switch in the dark. I will probably stick to the new Lutron Caseta Diva Smart Switches, even though they're twice the price.
The fun part is that you can set the swipe action to specific activation time, so it triggers light just the way you want it in the pitch black room.
The swipe actions do sound cool. But, you still need to locate the switch in the dark and then swipe. I can see myself accidentally activating the swipe actions while fumbling for the switch I want to press.
I do like some of the features, though. Perhaps I just don't have an application for such a switch in my home automation.
Each slice has a ambient effect for on/off which you can adjust the colour and brightness for and enable on a schedule. It highlights the slice with faint light from the top and bottom

I was looking forward to this, after watching your review and trying to order it seems it requires a Live cable. Most homes in the UK are not wired this way. Shame because I wanted to order 10 and do many things with it.
Unfortunately that's the same problem i have. Without running an extra wire it's hard to deal with these. It's not the most efficient bypass but you could run L&N to the switch (rewire from ceiling) then use the relay to control a smart bulb or small switch. You'd retain all the fancy features like RGB etc. Not ideal but also a workaround
@@notenoughtech Wondering if they hit a power limit when drawing off just the neutral? Although that's why most manufacturers provide a bypass module. A bit of a oversights from Sonoff's part.. I'm sure they are well aware this will impact their sales. It would be nice for them to provide a reason why they choose this design or if they have plans to release one in future. Going to be tough marketing this in the UK at least.
Bypass usually is to reduce flickering. And make more bulbs compatible
I already have 1 NSPanel and 1 Switman I use ESPHome on both. I would like to be able to take off the front plate of the Switcman and plug this is instead as I had to get an electrician in to install the NS Panel and switchman as the back box wasn't deep enough. I don't want the additional costs every time I want to change the light switch.
There is always a standard that will make an implementation difficult. I have some wall boxes that are 15mm deep and long time ago I decided to close it off and use a ZigBee switch (battery operated) than fight with the idea of cutting into wall.
No automation is perfect it's about picking your battles in a smart way
Totally agree with Zigbee comments. Surely the days of running mains wiring to switches are numbered.
I work in automation. I can assure you it's not the case. Each way of automation has strengths. Imagine what you say it's true and you are going to stop wiring light switches with mains and rely on battery ZigBee switches. Average house would need approx 10-20 batteries per year. That's 20 milion of households in the UK asking for 200.000.000 to 400.000.000 batteries just for one country.
Future houses will be built not with ZigBee but simply signal wires to each outlet and a single connected microcontroller. Your entire house can be controlled from a single esp32 device of you care to re-do the electrical wiring for each light and socket. It would be cheaper to run and maintain. More robust and future proof as if protocols change you need to change a single board.
Disadvantage is obviously prohibitive cost of retrofit but relatively low cost for new builds.
Does this work with Philips Hue lights?
Define 'work' it will cut the power to the light bulb which is not what you want for the smart bulbs.

Probably not the best type of switch for that. As per matter support... It would be relatively easy to OTA on every device with esp32. Espressif mentioned matter protocol support for esp32 and C/S variants.

What disappoints me with these type of switches is that the still insist on only providing WiFi 2.4GHZ. I know the bandwidth is not a big deal but with how congested the 2.4GHZ band for so many people, it would be nice for these to be dual band capable, which could be done with an ESP32 C3 or C6. I guess they likely have a stack of older ESP32's they need to use before worrying about firmware. The exposed terminals is not great, especially if you have metal wall boxes.
The 5amps per gang is great for lights. I like that and there are a lot of good features on this switch if you like some extra bling with the RGB and sound. Not quite my cup of tea for a switch, but I get some will like it.
I hope Itead take the feedback about the terminals on board as I see this as a safety issue.
Oh and I hope they consider a No Neutral version of this, even if it has the swipes but not the LEDs :)
I think as more and more devices are ac/ax sticking to 2.4GHz makes actual sense at this point. Mostly cause it's the most penetrating band we have with best range.
The rest of the criticism is very valid
Not sure why I keep seeing requests for 5Ghz, maybe because people think its newer/the latest thing? 2.4Ghz has plenty of channels and I've installed hundreds of devices with no issues. I keep seeing requests for 5Ghz but people don't know what they're asking for. 2.4Ghz is superior when it comes to penetrance through objects than 5Ghz or higher.
If they made a version with a good quality dimmer instead of a switch I would immediately get it. Now... I'm wondering, I just like having all of my lights dimmable so I can make them less bright in the middle of the night.
Dimming is troublesome simply dut to the sheer number of bulbs available.
@@notenoughtech Yes, I am aware. I've had good results with the Fibaro Dimmer 2 devices though, but they have configurable dimming methods (i.e. trailing edge and leading edge) which has not been an issue with any of my lights so far.
Try starting a channel, recommend a dimmer and see your inbox flow with issues :)
I appreciate sample size of one and I'm always happy for each automation. But if you sit for a day where I sit (I talk about these things with ppl and manufacturers) you get to see both sides of the same coin.
Is it doable sure... Profitable? Well... There is a reason we have shit loads of smart bulbs not dimmers to pick from

With low quality dimmable LED bulbs they are probably going to have issues as well... those are problematic (color correctness for example) regardless of the type of dimmer.
Still though... I wish there were more options for dimming existing fixtures.

@@notenoughtech Auto-captions. Near the end you begin talking about "gangs'". You should try watching your video with captions turned on. You might consider providing real captions instead of auto-captions. It's rough on those of us who are hard of hearing.
I used to do this. In 2 languages. Sadly there is only so much time in the day. I have a full time job as it is and CZcams is a hobby.
On positive side each video comes with a written article for all folks who would like to fall back on a different medium. I found this to be a good compromise

What's wrong with WiFi specifically?
@@notenoughtech power draw and reliability are the major drawbacks of wifi for me. A proper quality zigbee switch consumes less than 0.5W, most wifi equivalents I've seen use at least 2.5W. With my current energy prices that's a difference of about ~15 euro per year and that quickly adds up. I currently have 60 zigbee devices in my network, if those would all constantly consume 2W extra that would make my energy bill around a 1000 euro a year more expensive.
If you have reliability issues your issue isnt the protocol but equipment. Whole world uses WiFi on such scale that it simply mind blowing. The protocol can easily handle a simple switch.
Power concern is one of 2 valid arguments. The other one is the bigger security risk (assuming the device is connected to a network open to the internet)

1) wifi is not so easily scalable as zigbee/zwave/bluetooth mesh. You need to add several hotspots for big houses
2) Devices on it are more power hungry
3) No direct binding and single failure point to loose connection to this switch
4) Some local api's (sonoff is one of them) are just bad. Tasmota is ok, but you need to dissasemble the switch to flash it. Now imagine doing it for like 30 switches for a whole house
Wifi is good for general devices like a laptop, not for a smarthome
@@notenoughtech That is not what I meant, it's not so much that a wifi connection itself is unreliable but it introduces extra failure points. With zwave or zigbee binding the devices link directly to each other which guarantees a fast and reliable connection.
With wifi devices the common way of linking Tasmota or ESPHome devices together is through Home Assistant or Node Red. That adds yet another point of failure, your Home Assistant or Node Red installation and perhaps an MQTT server. Naturally you can directly link Tasmota or ESPHome devices to each other, but that requires having static IP addresses or the resolving of hostnames (which can be slow). And that's quite a bit more complicated to setup.
