Got mine for 89$ about a year ago. I've used it a ton. It's super helpful.
You can laminate a couple sheets of plywood together and then screw a 2x4 underneath in the center so that you can clamp it in the jaws of the Rockwell and it'll act as a makeshift table in a pinch.

Great review, thanks! I have had mine for 2yrs and absolutely love it! I’m a hobbyist woodworker and usually working alone. This thing has made life much easier. I also find it useful as a quick workbench when I need to work on something outside. I will just clamp in a 1/2 sheet of 3/4” MDF and I’m good to go. You are right about it being heavy though....it’s a pain rolling it up and over my garage side entry door’s threshold. It usually tips sideways. I end up having to lift it more often than I would like.

I've had mine for two years and i absolutely love it. It's built like a tank. This thing has a thousand uses and there are way too many examples to talk about. It's definitely that second set of hands when you need it. I don't know how any DIYer or workshop Pro can do without one. I actually got a sweet deal on mine by the manufacturer thru ebay. It was an "open box" but looked brand new and untouched when i received it. Tip for whoever is interested in one.

Lowe's seems to clear these out annually to rotate stock. I got my first two (in orange) for $45 each in Savannah back in 2015 and another pair (green like yours) in Virginia for about $60 each last year. During my time in Columbus, GA I used them with some shelving to serve as a table.
I also managed to pick up a couple of the Jawstands for cheap. Both are wonderful tools!

Big Boss $199 now on Amazon!! It’s a shame when companies have a great product and raise prices because they are selling. I was going to buy two until I saw the price, now I won’t buy even one. Most likely they will lose money at this price. Keep the price down and sell triple the product and double the money they’re getting now.

Thanks! I recently got a larger version of this second hand, and this video was very helpful to learn how to set it up and use. I found that pairing the unit with a simple sawhorse made cutting firewood a breeze. The clamp keeps the branch in place, so I can use both hands for the chain saw or pruning saw. This unit is definitely a game changer.

About 7 or 8 years ago I bought one from a tool outlet. (I think about $100) after using it for a week or so, I bought the two remaining ones. I use them constantly. Just a few weeks ago I discovered my most FAVORITE use.
For years I have been looking for an easy to use beer/soda can crusher. This will crush 2 or 3 cans at a time to 1/4 inch thick "pucks" with 5 pumps with the foot lever without being in the "lock" position.
BTW: don't forget to remove the rubber pads before you clamp a part to gas weld. OOPS! I won't forget that again! (Oh well, I still have two more jaw horses that still have rubber pads!)

I agree about 75%. I have had mine since it first can out. I find it is very clunky to move so I just leave it in my shed. It is a glorified vice. It is very heavy. I have used to to hold doors while installing. It is like having another set of hands. It helped me do things I may not have been able to do alone. I am a senior woman but I am very strong and do all my DIY's myself. I built a very Large CHICKEN COOP 10'x8' and 4 ' off the ground with all the comforts, and this helped a lot. It is not indestructible one of the plastic knobs broke right off. Other than that is is pretty much worth it..

I have two. I mount a 3/8 inch steel welding table top with 2 extensions that on one of these. The table is 30x36 with the extensions and heavy. It works great and the height is good to weld from. I use the other one to help hold something large.
Just break it down and stack it in the corner when your done. The shop is 22 x20 so it saves space to have that feature.

I love my Rockwell Jawhorse. I have the older gen model that was on sale as an old stock at one of our stores here. Currently, I use it mainly to hold my power tools: bench grinder, miter saw, band saw, etc., Without this, I would have had to bolt them down to a work surface. Now I can store all of them away and take them out when I need them, greatly increasing space in my already crowded work shop. Such an amazing tool and I am glad I have it, there's a ton of projects that I have planned and this will greatly help me out. Greetings from the tiny Pacific Islands of Palau!

Agreed! I have an older version I use for property renovation projects. It’s well designed and beefy! I have the table attachment and tool box accessories that i use a lot. Well made and fairly priced for the build quality. It’s one of the best quality/value proposition in tools these days.

  • @JamesPhillipsOfficial

I have a similar 1 by Triton and thought about a second one to hold long lengths. They are superb, we used the design to help repair balcony boards, This design is proving to be timeless, I like them so much more than a big standard workbench, people complain about them being heavy... But that is helpful to make it stable, the high weight limit allows to use additional weight like a bucket of sand when working with small items. 2 of them is good for those long 4 metre lengths of wood. For wood working there is nothing better out there when considering its semi portable, indoor or outdoors, strong clamping force, foot operated freeing up hands. Excellent aid for DIY

  • @johnheaney3349
    @johnheaney3349 Před 4 lety +4

I've owned one for well over a decade, before it was Rockwell. Definitely one of my best, most used purchases. You didn't mention it, so I will. Clamping with a foot pedal is pure genius. Note only can you apply amazing clamping pressure easily, but you have two hands free! That means you can use both hands to align multiple parts or even just get the exact position you want with one part. It also means you can hold your parts with both hands while using the quick release, so getting workpieces in and out of this thing is really fast.
Flipping the jaw around for the extra large opening is not something I use much, but I have clamped an entire door (widthwise) in this thing.
I used to have a shop with a plywood floor and I just screwed the two front feet down. Absolutely rock solid at that point. If you have a spot where you want to use it regularly, you can just screw it down to a rectangle of 3/4" plywood. Otherwise, the secret is to get a foot onto one of the two front feet and use your weight to hold it down. Those splayed front legs make it super stable, but you have to ensure the whole thing doesn't move. The other nice stable direction is straight toward the back leg. So just apply force going side to side or front to back. You can also put the far leg up against a wall or some other stop. That's if you're doing something like hand planing.
One thing you need to be wary about when cross cutting with a handsaw: the front legs splay out and typically end up under the cut. If you follow through the cut, it's difficult to avoid whacking the metal leg with your saw teeth. I've lost many delicate Japanese dovetail saw teeth to this thing. One tip is to clamp a piece of rubber or wood to the side of the leg so the saw hits it, instead of the metal leg. Or put a sacrificial wood scrap under the piece you're cutting. You definitely want to do that if you're using a reciprocating saw or a chain saw!

I can't remember how long ago it was but I'd go to check out Lowes black friday sales. And Lowes was selling the Rockwell Jawhorse for under $100. They don't deep discount stuff anymore but right around 2009 when the economy fell out from under us prices fell sharply. A couple of years later they had the same discount and I bought another one for my son-in-law. He told me he uses the Jawhorse all the time just like his father in law. A cool tool is one thing, which this is, but i just don’t see enough value to get one. It’s basically a sturdy sawhorse with a vise. If I were working at home I’d just use my bench vise. On a job site I’m sure if I worked with metal I would use one but I work with wood and so far I can’t remember a time I needed a vise to hold down any door or piece of trim or ply. And most guys I’ve seen who work with metal have a vise mounted to their bumper. A set of sturdy sawhorses has worked great for me so far. I just don’t see the value other than the feeling of buying a new cool tool.

I use my Rockwell JAWHORSE to securely hold heavy duty pruning loppers which makes an efficient setup to cut up fallen branches and brush into small pieces that drop into trash containers under the loppers. This method alleviates using two hands on the loppers and bending over to cut up branches. Use one hand to feed the material and the other hand to operate the loppers.
The JAWHORSE also works great to hold large branches when using a chainsaw. Position your garden cart under the branch to catch the cut off pieces. No more bending over to pickup the pieces.

I have this same Jawhorse and I love it. Its built solid and can take abuse, and because of the three legs its very stable, its very useful, but. I used it to process many of the same sized items on a project, opening and clamping in the same spot and the clamping dogs wore out and so the clamp will no longer lock and hold. I still have it and am thinking about how I can modify it so that I can use it again but have not come up with the solution as of yet. Again, I loved using this tool, was very happy with it. Maybe the company will see this and harden the clamp dogs or come up with some way to improve this one key component.

Nice video. I am glad you showed the set up and take down of it, the other three videos I’ve watched did not do that.
I am a wood carver. I’m torn between this and the stand. I like the ability to really multi task the jaw horse with larger items and how stable it would be. I like the stand for how easy it would be to travel with. I do a lot of carve ins all over once or twice a week with fellow carvers. The stand could also be multi-use to an extent, and also has ample stability and capacity to handle carving. What I really need is to see them side by side set up and just play with them before purchasing. Problem is, I’ve never seen them out of the box. Any words of wisdom?

Since I posted my comment I saw a comparison video between the Franklin (Harbor Freight) and the Rockwell version. It seems that they are mostly identical and my impressions that the Franklin is 'beefier' may not have been justified. Seems that there are only minor differences between them. Watch the comparison video. I just want to say that my Franklin version of this is a very sturdy (and heavy) piece of equipment that I use a lot and I'm glad that I bought one. Its refreshing to see real quality kit. I had an original Black & Decker workmate (sadly not the cast frame). It eventually wore out but had loads of use & abuse.
Sadly I made the huge mistake of not repairing it. The replacement versions are cheap & nasty by comparison.

Oh yeah I think I got one of these for my brother-in-law it was yellow so I'm thinking it was De Walt but it had the same feature so I guess It's a co-branded product. Another use a lot of people might not think of is he used it to hold his gun while aiming in his sights or scope. I've got a buddy who does a lot of interdisciplinary work that calls for a wide range of tools to be used on the fly sort of like a service truck but he does complain that he has a lack of ability to hold stuff in a vise. Hitch vise's are a possibility, but a birdshot filled square tubing of steel with a plate to bolt down a vise is going way past 50 pounds without good stability and cost more! He might have a surprise under the Christmas tree 🌲

I have the Titan version of this in the UK. It’s amazingly useful. I have the toothed jaws as well for holding logs when I use my chainsaw. So much safer then cutting with out holding the logs.

The jawhorse sheet master is not much more then this model its 180 for 1 of them but it does way more in size and weight with more clamping force does 49 inches or a 4 foot by 8 foot sheet

That’s the way tools are becoming, we are getting spoiled! I’m at that point now that if it’s to cumbersome to move around or if it has a cord most likely I won’t use it anymore. 🤦🏻‍♂️

I bought it too for about $125 that came with clamps to hold 2x4 legs of you wanted to use it as a table with plywood. I have rarely used it. Works awesome for holding a bicycle at any angle while you work on it. I almost considered selling it in a recent garage sale but wouldn't be able to live with myself seeing it go after what I had paid for it. I know further uses will follow maybe inspired by this video.

Can you give an update on this? I have the same clamp, however, those holes that the clamp keeps grabbing, they do bend up inside because the item you clamp might not line up the holes correctly. this has happened twice and I have had them fix but they bend up and now that spot is not grabbable. such as 2x8 on its side or for that matter 2xanything. the clamp will not hold tight. so now you need to pad out the clamp to grab different holes. I wish it was more of a cog wheel that grabbed the holes it would be better. Just wondering if yours has had this issue.
