We use 10 portable ballast inside the boat in addition to the boat's ballast. Much more portable and hassle free to move around that inflatable ballast.

Thanks for sharing this,when we swapped from wake surfing to foiling we noticed you didn’t need much of a wave and we changed from a T22 Axis to a Nautique 210 and we only run about 15% ballast in the 210 to get a nice wave.
Hi Richard - that is awesome that you found a wave that works great for you. Our intention is to actually maximize the size of the wave while keeping it clean - to find that perfect mix of peaking the wave giving it the most power up until the point of diminishing returns where the increased power becomes disruptive to the wave. Make sense?

Outstanding! I will clean up the bubble-line as I now see my shaping of the second wave has been all wrong. The second wave has been elusive to me, this is going to really help. On the T23 (our boat also), I suspect you use much less ballast and no wedge to clean up the second wave. Great video, much appreciated!
You'll need to explore the use of the wedge. I'd start with zero ballast and the surf gate engaged on the opposite side to fold the wave over. Add the wedge incrementally to see the effect and then explore a little bit of ballast on that port side. Please let us know how it goes!

Foiling expanded our boat options when we started looking for a new boat. We just bought a Cobalt R3. Didn't think we needed all the ballast since we're foiling and chilling most of the time. We'll see, the boat should be delivered in the next couple weeks. The boat I just sold was a 2001 Tige 20ci with no ballast and we had the best times foiling behind it.

@@HALFLIFEVIDEO I will, it will be interesting! Slingshot WF1, 61 cm mast but just bought the 90, Infinity 76 wing. Didn't try 90 yet. I'm 210 lbs, worked well at 9mph on Tige boat turning slightly towards the right (I'm goofy). I was boating in Tahoe all summer.... Great times! Can't wait for new boat to get here!! Love you videos!!!

Super helpful video! The wake school i've been getting water time at has a different boat model I think, but will try to get similar settings dialed in next time I go. What's the difference between surf tabs and trim tabs? How would you summarize the settings in general terms? 25% ballast on the left side and full tabs?
Hey Greg -- surf tabs and trim tabs are similar....it's just that surf boats manage their tabs to crank up the wave, typical boats manage trim tabs to keep the boat level or change boat height. The goal here is to manage the tabs to move the white water to the offside wave so that you have a clean surface to foil on. So if you increase the surf tab setting on the side you're surfing it should push the white water to the other side. Yes - we go 25% ballast on the port side to offset the natural rotation and increased wave on the starboard side.

@@HALFLIFEVIDEO super helpful! will give it a go next time I go on the lake. Your videos have been extremely helpful to progress my foiling. I'm also on an Armstrong setup (1850/1250) and mostly prone foil. I spend a couple of months/year in Portugal but landlocked the rest of the year, although near a lake with a wake school! Learning to pump behind the boat now and hopefully start doing wave transfers soon. Another completely unrelated question, but to learn to pump do you guys prefer the 0 or +1 shims (the old TTF)?
Any tips for setting up a nautique g23? Last season, we set it up like a surf wave but that’s probably not the best approach. Foiling an HS 1550 front, V200 tail and 85cm mast.
Also, how’s the new WKT board? Seems pricey but could be worth it?

G23 we haven't calibrated that wave - we've only stolen the wave which is an awesome wave. Look to fold the whitewater from the riding side to the other with your tabs.
I am still learning and will give this video a shot. I have a question that would mayb save me a ton of time, what length would you suggest the rope to be at for 2nd wave?
Hi Jason -- have you watched our 'how to wake foil' playlist? if not - check it out. Depending upon the type of boat - 60' to 75'. To start with, I'd just use whatever length you have available. If you're ordering a new one, go with 75' because you can always shorten it. Make sense?
@@HALFLIFEVIDEO I can get up and get air sometimes I have been trying on 1st wave but I hear mix reviews if it is better to learn on 1st or 2nd wave. I haven't been able let go of the rope on the 1st wave i feel i get going to fast and almost into the boat so why I think the 2nd wave might be better. I have a 2020 Tige RZX 23 which I have not been able to get up behind yet, I was able behind my 2014 Malibu but I didn't have my longer rope and was using a surf rope and the wave was double the size. Anyway I will give the longer rope a try and use some of the info from this video. Can you send me the link to the video you are referring too?

We actually learned on the first wave - there's no rules on which wave so do what you're most comfortable with. That said - most people enjoy the smoother, less turbulent water that you can get to on the second wave with a long line to give you flexibility on where you are on the wave. If you're on the first wave, know that you can be back quite a bit from the critical part (steep part) and have plenty of push to be going.
