    I've been using Linux since 2004-2005 and I love ZorinOS. Its not just for Windows users, its for ppl who actually want their Linux distro to work out of the box without having to tinker with it for weeks just to get simple things to work. I've come full circle. I started with redhat, went to Ubuntu and later Mint. Found myself fiddling with Arch for years. These days I love distros like Zorin that just work out of the box.

      Ive been running the same arch for a hot minute now, im not even sure how long. I setup qtile & all my configs & backed everything up on git as well as a list of all the dependencies I found i needed for the softwares I use.
      Since doing that, even a fresh install of arch works practically out of box for me

      lolwut? I just re-installed an Arch box yesterday; took about 5min to install and half hour to install packages and configure ... I suspect you're trying to do it through clicky-draggy GUI crap rather than with config files which are transferable and can be versioned.

    Zorin and Mint are both nice for beginners moving over form Windows. Zorin 17 has the advantage of being shipped with Wayland by default since it uses a heavily customized version of Gnome instead of Cinnamon. On Mint, Wayland is currently an "experimental" feature.

    I think the Zorin layout is actually a better option for Gnome than the default layout. As an ex Windows user myself I like to have a start menu that is easy to navigate. I am using Gnome myself but I have installed the Arc Menu which gives it a Cinnamon style menu that new users would be more used to. Gnome used to have this menu until they changed it in Gnome 3 but I think Gnome should offer users a choice of menu. Which could be the default Gnome or a menu like Zorin. KDE offers several style menus for their desktops so I don't see why Gnome can't. I have tried Zorin out in live mode and I would be happy to have it on my desktop. Not sure if you can disable the Snaps or Flataks though.

    • @plektosgaming
      @plektosgaming Před 4 měsíci +1

      My old Cinnamon build years ago was tweaked to look almost identical to the old MacOS from 2010 or so. Clean and easy to use. This looks like it has the same ideas in mind, where being able to just navigate and find things quickly is set up for you. Which is 90% of the "battle". Even as a bittervet myself ( heh ) I really appreciate when it's simple and direct as after a while, I just don't WANT to deal with the extra time and work to do what even my budget phone does by default.

    • @plektosgaming
      @plektosgaming Před 4 měsíci

      @@synapse-nova lol. It really doesn't mean much to the average new user, but it DOES matter what distro you use when it comes to patches and updates. I liked Garuda ( as an example) but one man's obsession and love with precious little backup in case a random delivery van took him out one day (we never know when that walk across the street will be our last - lol) was not good for anything other than as a hobby/curiosity.
      Zorin is... I'd call it barely viable for mainstream use at 7 employees. Still, far better than 1 or 2 like many smaller distros. My main complaint with almost all distros is that they are still in the "free" camp, which is, if I am playing for an OS, I fully expect them to pay for the licenses to use the official drivers and APIs what Windows developers do so that emulation and mouse input and all the rest works perfectly. It's a few cents here and there in the price of a typical piece of software (per copy), but it's also why, as an example, everyone in a business environment uses Parallels on Mac instead of some kludgy "free" emulator. In fact, I think it's the main reason Linux in general hasn't caught on. They cling to that "free or die" mentality like a Libertarian prepper rather than run a business. That Nvidia driver nonsense? Pay to use the official ones like Zorin did. Can you use Nvidia's official drivers? Absolutely. For a nominal fee like every other developer. DUH. Oh, look, stuff doesn't crash or go wonky!
      Yes, it's a little money for the Pro version, but it's pretty clean from what I can see. And you DO get better stability and support for that price. Free only goes so far.

      You still can't properly import documents saved as word format into Google Docs. Libre Office fonts are alternate/free fonts and it chokes. I had to take my Libre Office file, copy it to Google Drive, re-download it to my ancient Macbook Pro that had a real copy of Word on it, and re-do all of the fonts and formatting that while it LOOKS the same, wasn't industry standard. Then save it, re-upload it, and then import it into Google Docs. So them fixing it by spending a little time and money is a big deal. This is WHY you pay money for a hybrid/commercial product, IMO. Support, patches, and if they need a codec or font of video driver, simply pay for it and add it to the product.
      Zorin seems interesting to me as it gives you some of this for a nominal price.

      Wine is a framework that provides a Linux substrate bridged with Windows and works in most intended scenarios. The compiler guys call this IR, Intermediate Representations.
      Either way and nevertheless, virtualizations and emulations are technical approaches to the same problem; just like hyper-visors.
      All gaming distro's include Wine, as well as most Educational focused distro's, like LinuxFX. And also security oriented OS'es ship Wine by default, hardly without exception.

    • @SriHarshaChilakapati
      @SriHarshaChilakapati Před 5 měsíci

      @@MsDuketown I didn't understand the comment. IR in compiler design is the internal representation which multiple frontends can emit and have a common backend. The GCC project and the LLVM projects are a good example of it, where in GCC, we have C, C++, Ada, D language frontends emitting the same IR which gets compiled to different architecture specific binaries by different backends. The same exists in Clang as well as Apple's platforms.
      What I meant by translation layer here is that WINE acts as a program loader and runtime linker assist, as Linux usually only understands how to load and link ELF binaries, not PE binaries. Technically both are different.

    Zorin is great, my daily driver. BUT you need that Windows compatibility - you can't escape from it. For example, if You want to play upper tier games (and I DO) you'll have to install Proton with Steam; no tweaks needed but with proprietary video driver. Also, some apps for Linux just don't exist or are too expensive, like PDF editors.
    In addition, I listen music on Hi-fi system and sound quality is very important for me, so I tested several live Linux distros and Zorin won.

    I've had Zorin on my second laptop for years, but it's an older version that I don't want to update because I have so much on there (specific device drivers for older hardware peripheral etc and specific system-level command line installed stuff, a lot of which is not necessarily easy to source again now).
    May be time to spin up a newer version though... But I'll have a lot of stuff to add again.
    My main reason for having a Linux machine is because I work with a lot of devices and system that use file systems that Windows can't see and takes a lot of fiddling with VM's etc to do, where with Linux it's all just there.

I don't like seeing so much remote connection sofware on it as such things are a boon for scammers but that's another story. I put on Zorin 17 but that is more like a tarted up Ubuntu than Zorin 16. If you want to play games occasionally, Linux can do it but it's not for that, if you play games most of your time then stick to windows. People just love to influence others to be like them. I am no Windows Fan ever since Windows 8 disaster Microsoft did... But Linux is still another SHITTY OS to even begin with.. and the lack of Support for some of the Major Application Suites and Popular Gaming is making LINUX at the bottom of the LIST for me to consider moving it to even if I am so pissed off at MS and the overall Windows and I am Pissed off at MS and its fkd up Windows Updates and all that Pathetic ADs thing

      GNOME stands for "GNU Network Object Model Environment". Since GNU is pronounced as "g-nu" (with audible g), GNOME is officially also pronounced with an audible G. But it's fine to pronounce it with a silent g as well, many people do that.

    Never understood the point of this, if you want to use Windows then use windows, Linux isnt anything like Windows and attempting to make it act like it just sounds like unnecessary confusion

      Can you not imagine scenarios? 50 year old man. A Linux admin as his job. Has a mother of 80 living on her own on the other side of the country who never needed to use a computer for her job. She only needs a computer for a browser for email and something like internet banking. Her 50 year old son is tired of getting calls from mum saying her Windows laptop is playing up again. The son knows it's because of Windows. Xmas comes and the son goes to stay with mum for a couple of weeks. During that time the son shows his mum this Zorin OS on another laptop and his mum gets to grip with it quickly and likes it. The son leaves his mum the laptop but also leaves mum with her Windows laptop. Over the next few months mum transitions from Windows to Zorin and is perfectly happy with it. Something that might of helped with this transition is because parts of it are like Windows. Take away from this is that the world is made up of people who have had a very different life experience to you and me. And if it wasn't for the mums of the world then none of us would be here.

      Well.. the thing is, that Windows shamelessly copied everyone else. There are elements of Windows 3.11 that copied Amiga and Atari 16 bit OSs, Apple, and others. And so on until Windows 7, where it started to look different - but still a fancy shell on top of crap code. So, design elements are just that - and good ones are not OS specific. So I feel no shame in taking the best from everything and making it actually work well. That was the problem with Linux for more than a decade. It was honestly kludgy and harder to use than my old Apple IIGS on a normal day. Changes like this are absolutely necessary if you want to gain wider acceptance.
