Is Zorin OS the best Ubuntu Based Distro? What sets it apart from it's competitors?

- Today we take a look at Zorin OS 17.1. We try to find ways that makes Zorin OS unique. How is it different from Ubuntu, Linux Mint, or Pop_OS?
Edit: Zorin OS 17.1 uses Gnome 45.2. I state that it's Gnome 3, I obviously was wrong.
Quick edit: the Gnome version for Zorin 17.1 is 45.2.

You sound like an experienced Zorin user and we know there are a lot of other wonderful free Linux flavors out there and still, you can help us Windows users to embrace your suggestion about Zorin because we depend on Windows third party software that have windows versions only.
Here is what you do and please do so in a detailed video.
Here is a suggestion for the video title-
"How to run Windows 3rd party audio and video software on Zorin".
Show all of us, former Windows users if those third party windows software for both for video and audio will work on Zorin 17.1 core in their Windows versions, and if they are, show us how to do so.
Having those met, will make many windows will gladly embrace Zorin for good, we would really like to support the developers and we missing videos about that subject, then you can also help doing this video and also support the developers at the same time.

Gnome extensions work well, eg I always limit battery charging to 80% on my ThinkPads (Linux & Windows). I also appreciate the Ubuntu installer which "just works" better than any other Linux Distro (particularly for dual boot). It might be easy to dismiss Zorin as just another shiny windows look alike, but it is far more than that.

Where are your video tutorials of how to install third party windows software on Zorin?
Installed 17.1 on my roughly 1 year old laptop mostly out ot curiosity, and was pleased to find that I all the hardware was detected automatically. Everything just worked and I've yet to have to use the terminal for anything. Compared to Windows 11 the system was ready for use so much faster for a clean install.
Wouldn't be surprised if I get to install Zorin on quite a few Windows 10 systems next year.

Zorin has past up Linux Mint as the best desktop Linux distro you can install at this point. Most don't even come close. 99% of people don't need the newest version of Gnome or even know what that is. Zorin is beautiful , fast and stable. You can also install software from pretty much anywhere. Whats not to love?
As a veteran LMDE user, I disagree.
@@nosotrosloslobosestamosreg4115 I've used LMDE and the standard versions since its been a thing and Zorin has replaced mint for me at this point.
Honestly the only thing I never really cared for in Linux Mint was the UI. After theming it, it never seemed as snappy anymore. Zorin does everything Mint can right out of the box and more plus it looks a LOT better and is snappier.

There is something to be said about how many videos there are on easy to use distros or just linux in general lately. Its great to see people are moving to linux. I know these videos takes time/effort without crazy pay off but as a semi new user i still find these very interesting and informative. You sir are doing your part in contributing to the bump in linux market share. Helping new users get comfy and break that wall to learn! Thanks Jeremy! Keep it up!
I really like the customizations that Zorin do to their UI. The older packages aren't really my thing, but I understand they make the right choices for their users. Respect to them.
I've always liked Zorin, even though I generally prefer to use Mint/LMDE. The 'only' issue I had using it last time was, believe it or not, with my HP printer. Printing was no issue, but when I needed to set up the scanning part of it I found it wouldn't let me without having a root password. I could probably have got around that if necessary by setting up a root password, but still, I was surprised that something basic like that was an issue.
Fresh. Fast. Consistent - that's all I can say about Zorin OS. A ready to use system out of the box that does look and feel like a commercial product. A big thanks to all devs of this masterpiece.
Iv seen people compline about thew pro addition. It seemed to me like just a way to support the project.
Nice job once again, Jeremy. I use and prefer Mint, Zorin Core, and MX (in that order) on three machines. My disposably cheap travel laptop runs Zorin lightning fast despite its mere 4/64 gB two-core system. I recommend Zorin Core to Linux converts who are coming over from Win 7 because look and feel-wise they'll be right at home. (And Mint for W-10 users)
used linux off/on for years. Love Mint. Laptop died so bought Latitude 7390. Tried Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora, Big Linux and Manjaro and none would even load. Could get Ubuntu and Mint to load using safe mode. Mint screen brightness would change keyboard brightness. Ubuntu no option at all. Tried Zorin 17.1 and loaded up perfect and everything working correctly. No idea what is different with installer on Zorin for it to work perfect yet the others wont

I run everything on Pro, even the 15 year old Del 16 notebook - 4core,etc - It is running on new ish pc's otherwise - 7 - with two as Dual boots with windows and the old Del - running 4Tb ssds and 16 gig ram, with the screen the best of it's time with touch and 1080p resolution is runnig a Zorin/KDE Plasma Neon dual-boot. I run Zorin withthe KDE Plasma desktop.
I can verify that Zorin works well on older computers: Zorin Education 17.1 on a 15 year old i7-950. 😃
The Pro edition, tbh, is all stuff that you _could_ do for yourself, entirely, once you figure out how GNOME Extensions work. _However,_ the real point of laying down money for the Pro edition is to support the Zorin team. For that, it's well worth it.
They should have waited until LTS 24.04 came out to put out this version. The software is too old no matter what people say. I have supported them for years and have purchased several of the pro versions including this one. It looks nice BUT I want a newer base for my newer hardware.
Zorin Grid has been “coming soon” for years now. I was extremely excited about it but I’ve basically given up on that ever coming out.
I'm running 17.1 Education on a first gen i7-950. And, yes, it's a really smooth runner. Amazing since the machine it's on is now 15 years old.
I installed Zorin OS 17.1 Core alongside Windows 10 Home . I noticed that on installing Zorin l had to reconfigure the SATA controller Mode in Bios to AHCI to complete installation. But for the Windows to run it has uses RAID not AHCI in Bios. So everytime l open either OS l have to change the Bios. This doesn't seem to be like that for Linux Mint Cinnamon or Ubuntu. I like the Zorin desktop and that it allows Window programs to ve installed. I aim to use both Zorin and Windows OS.
My personal choice is Zorin. Having tried all the others I found that Zorin came complete straight from the installation. I am not a gamer so cannot comment on that side the system.
I wish content providers wouldn't change the screen default to a black background for their videos, I find it harder to follow.
I agree. They all go in for Dark Mode as if it's somehow more "cool", but it makes things harder to see for the viewer.
@@jimkyle8008 I'm not sure what it is. I think it takes me a second to adjust and by the time I have, it's on to another picture. Anyway, glad to hear it wasn't just me.
Installed 17 on my old ProBook. I could not get it to install UEFI without a Bios boot menu. Legacy failed. I got around this by installing 16 in legacy and then updating to 17.
Does Zorin force the Snap version of Firefox like Ubuntu?

I think that if Zorin had a sliding scale perhaps set at what they want but adjustable down to fifteen or twenty dollars they might get more users.(Like Elementary OS) It is almost impossible to convince someone to spend almost fifty bucks on a Linux distro, after you have worked hard to get them to switch to Linux in the first place. I have installed Zorin free version on client's computers, but have always given them the option to buy the Pro version and the reaction to the price is almost guttural repulsion across the board. (Note I demonstrate several popular distros with a Ventoy drive usually). Some people choose not to use Zorin free just because they have a paid version, even if I tell them that it is 100% free.
I totally understand their perspective though. They probably feel like just because there's a paid version, that getting the free one would be like getting a system that's "less than". Nobody wants that, so it's not a surprise that some people shy away.
@@SirCacobut the free version isn't a downgrade, you get practically nothing for the pro version apart from the feeling that you supported them.
@@shamrockisland Of course, I know it isn't. I'm speaking from the perspective of someone who doesn't, though. You see a free version and a paid version, your first thought is, well, the free version must be stripped down somehow. Again, I'll reiterate that I'm not saying it is. I'm aware of the differences, but I'm just trying to put myself in the shoes of the average Joe here.

It has a customized version of GNOME, yes. Kind of a patchwork of different GNOME versions, IIRC; some is 42.x, some is 43.x.

I was looking forward to trying Zorin Grid, they coming "soon" I think it's been 2 years already.....

if you came from MAC - POP OS( Better than Classic Ubuntu)

perfect distro would be zorin DE on suse tumbleweed base. that aint going to happen, so suse gnome + extensions it is. problem with debian/ubuntu base is prehistoric package versions.
Its so hard for me to be in the same room as my homeschooled student. Thank god there’s finally a remote solution that lets me interact with my homeschool child in person as little as someone who sends their kids to public school.

Are you suggesting EVERY TIME you want to update Zorin, you must PAY for the new version?
Since Zorin is based on Ubuntu which is based on Debian, why not go with the ORIGINAL?

Nope! It's not good. Sooner a polished enough Android x86 will take advantage of Microsoft doing absolutely everything it can to make people ditch Windows, than the average Betty will be able to fix a faulty app installation without the terminal, which requires learning the terminal, which tons of IT experts don't care to bother with, satisfied with working on Windows or Mac, cause it pays off. Like I've just commented, Android proved a user friendly Linux is doable, but to PC Linux distro developers, solving even a minor problem without their holy terminal, would be some utter herecy 😮! "Thou shalt conjure thy Linux distro's functionality from the depths of agony, by typing thy ass off in the password prompt, and the sacred Linux terminal of the mystical Linux commands!" You get the picture why even a Mac is more convenient.

Zorin is heavier than Linux Mint and has less customization and is too flashy with the animations. Animations slow down your computer. Linux Mint is a much better option if you choose xfce or mate!!
