The Fiat Panda makes a very good citycar. The key problem is, for Fiat at least, that there are any number of other urban scoots that do much the same. Why would you choose a Panda over, say, a Peugeot 108 or a Volkswagen up! or even a Hyundai i10? Yes, the image of studied Latin nonchalance might appeal and a base Panda sitting outside a Soho espresso bar would probably be cooler than any of the aforementioned alternatives, but where the Panda really shines, where it really becomes something special is when it sends drive to all four wheels.
Fiat sells two kinds of four wheel drive Panda, a standard 'Panda 4x4' and a slightly more capable 'Panda Cross 4x4'. Think of the latter as a Panda 4x4 plus ten per cent. It's more capable, more hardcore and just more of everything. It's what a 108, an up! Or an i10 could never be.

Many people just don't realize how practical and capable this panda really is. The twinair 85hp engine is a gem, punchy and torquey, is very well balanced and keeps up even on autoroute at 130km/h in relative quietness. But in 4x4 Panda is not really economical. I daily a Panda 4x4 twinair after having many big suv s and this little one murders them in 99% of the time in real world use.

It would be great if you could consider reviewing the Panda Cross and giving us your view between the two.

Wrong the panda 4x4 did very well on the 4x4 test track so deserves more credit than this reviewer gives it.

Sorry for my english, my 4x4 is a great car.
It run's great at snow,i think it is a very good car.
I have a 0,85 fiel Version , but i think, a Diesel Version is ...a little bit better.

Introduce a few better colours and seat coverings and they'll sell a lot more

I think I would prefer the diesel version of the Fiat Panda 4x4.
Although in a little over 7-8 years from now I strongly suspect that it will not be between petrol or diesel but rather between full electric or hydrogen fuel cell.

I wouldnt get the diesel, I had a new one, big mistake. Gearing is not suited for motorway, revs its nuts off at 70mph. Twinair engine is far quieter and more relaxing at speed. Ive had one of those in standard Panda form.

Diesel is more economical, better for road use if you do many miles, if you're thinking on going off road, petrol is better. If it's just unpaved roads Diesel is more than enough. Things a little bit more aggressive the diesel lacks torque at low revs ... 1st rule of Off-roading " As slow as you can, as fast as you need to.

    Twinair 4x4 should have automatic

The Cross 4x4 has hill descent mode above the standard 4x4 and that’s it. The rest is cosmetic.

@@welshman64 the standard 4x4 has the ELD button for locking as well. The Cross version is not worth the extra. Its looks a bit OTT in my opinion, a bit tacky with the fake looking cages which incidentally are not solid metal.
