  • It feels like the Nintendo Switch is starting to enter the last phase of it's life, which means a shiny new Nintendo system will come out eventually. Here are a bunch of my thoughts on what that new console might look like, and what I hope it ends up being. As long as there's some new system music I'll be happy. Thanks for Watching!

I completely agree that the next console NEEDS new music. The Wii U had different themes for pretty much every different menu (and they were all bangers) while the switch only has that opening jingle that plays the first time you boot up the system and then you never hear it again.

#NintendoNEXUS I hope the next Nintendo console is resembles the Nintendo 64 with FD add ON "except" it has a High Dynamic Range Disk player to play games and movies. Also a special slot for a cartidge area for Static Read Write Cartridge for optional special games. An SD Card reader. A System Expansion Port. 4 controller ports. System specs greater then Xbox X. Someone make a mok up of the old NINTENDO64 WITH Floppy Disc add on and make it look amazing! Controllers should have those center touch pads, maybe even with a touch screen instead since their cheap to make these days. They should call it the Nintendo NEXUS. Love the name of it... sounds nice and reminds me of social inclusion. Let Nintendo Switch remain as superior handheld selling side by side. The next Nintendo counsole should make us all feel like gaming went into the future and does things never done before. #FUTUREGAMING

I hope the new Next Gen Nintendo console will get a UI overhaul I want it be whimsical and fun like the Wii U and Wii menus! The Switch menu is boring as well. Backwards Compatibility gotta work similar to DS and 3Ds where you can insert the Cartridge into the system and pop it in.

Love your concept for the next console. I'm gonna take a Sony approach to the name and call it Nintendo Switch 2. And while I'm at it, I'm gonna predict that the next Mario Kart will be released maybe alongside the system and it's gonna be called Mario Kart 10. Mainly because Nintendo seems to be acknowledging Tour as a main entry in the series ( from my perspective anyway ). Would love to see a new Animal Crossing game during the first year ( although I still haven't finished working on my island in New Horizons ).

I'm predicting 2024 will be the Switches last year as Nintendo main system, but I definatley think it could serve as a small cheaper alternitive to the next system until 26, 27 or 2028 before being officially discontinued. Kind of what they did with the GBA and DS, and (To a lesser extent) the Wii and Wii. U!

They should release a Switch model without a screen.
Hear me out, rather than have a hardware clone clogging up a new device, make Switch 2 be a portable dock, like a laptop. Use it for backwards compaitiblity, card slot, controller connections management, but mostly have it run Miiverse as an overlay to the new console. And I'm thinking orange on black bubbles would be a cool marketing color.
With a new update Switch would still run Miiverse, but be pretty lackluster as it would jsut be "look at Miiverse: the game". On the new console games, you could actually integrate a lot of functions because the entire resource loss would be out of the Switch, not the Switch 2. It should have graphics rendering layers to separate the streams like AR, so if the Miis start lagging the main game is still unaffected.
The device could be a super wide aspect ratio, curved screen and extended battery monitor for Switch, and feature a lot of art functions like a drawing tablet in the keyboard half. Not much taller than Switch but wide enough to play 3 people, no more complicated to carry than a tennis racket. Very detailed 3D photos could be taken if there's two cameras at the opposite ends of the wide monitor, and the image rendering could work like SNES mode 7 and have all sorts of wacky implementations. Let's have another go at Virtual boy.

Given the amount of DLC content still lined up for the Switch, including but not limited to:
    - MK8 Booster Pass
    - Confirmed Sparks of Hope DLC
    - Probably TotK DLC, seeing how BotW had that too
I wouldn't expect them to release anything before 2025.
I also wouldn't put it beyond them to just push another mainline Mario game on the Switch, or just introduce out-of-nowhere DLC like they did for Mario Kart to extend the Switch lifespan even further.
I'd come back to this by the end of 2023, when we actually have confirmation if the Switch will get more Mainline content, which is a good indicator for if and when a new system will come. The next few Directs will be very clear indication of where we're heading.
Edit: Well, given the recent announcement of a new mainline Mario game being available on the current switch, my expectations on the topic have been somewhat reinforced, I won't expect a new console until at least 2025.

I don't know anything about tech so what i'm saying could be literally impossible, but imagine everything you mentioned for hardware (a more powerful hybrid) but also with a more relevant touchscreen. Switches have touch screens but they don't work with styluses and don't impact the games whatsoever, but if touch screens were improved that could open the door for MANY amazing remakes of popular DS and 3DS games that were heavily touchscreen reliant, like Tomodatchi Life or Rhythm Heaven. Sure, they could change controllers and adapt it for a non-touchscreen console but i feel like that takes away a lot of the charm. AND BECAUSE IT WOULD MAKE IT LIKE IMPOSSIBLE FOR THEM TO NOT DO A TOMODATCHI LIFE SEQUEL OMG I WOULD SELL MY LEFT KINDEY FOR AN IMPROVED TOMODATCHI LIFE SEQUEL.
I know Tomodatchi Life is not that touchscreen reliant and not the best example but I didn't really have many other 3DS game experiences of games that weren't remade or ported to the switch (AND ALSO I LOVE TOMODATCHI LIFE BUT IT NEEDS A SEQUEL SO BAD)

One issue I can see imagining something like that is weight. I think most people like "big" screens so holding a device w/ a screen like the Switch or bigger + needing one hand to interact with the touchscreen seems pretty uncomfortable to me. In my mind, wuthout realisig at first, I just accidentally went to the Wii U trying to think of a solution for touchscreen mechanics in docked mode 😂

What I would think Nintendo would do for next generation:
Software: A brand new interface with some apps on the eshop and launched, a smartphone like interface with slightly rounded square icon and have the 3D look similar to Mac OS and Wii U. The Mii sounding too similar to Wii distracts Nintendo from using it so I would rename it ‘Mytendo’ and you can now universally apply clothings earned from games. The Miiverse, social channel from Wii and picto chat features have all been merged into Nintendoverse. A meta verse sorta thing that focuses on game and fun in a community) rather than productivity(Metaverse sucked because Meta can’t admit it’s another social media). You can move in this interactive and there’s different hubs for different games, find strangers in the hub or just chat using the quick chat interface. You may send coloured drawings or stamps you earned in games. You may also teleport to the poll room for polls or the Mii room for a Mii contest. A mail function is also there so that it can automatically package long messages. You may sent it everywhere or just your friends. Menu music and also some photo, sound , new & weather and Nintendo news apps to play around with, this time they won’t be pre-installed. Themes would be cool and folders functions like the Switch or you can put it on the Home Screen. Thats’s about it for software
Hardware: I think the new system should have a innovative new feature, my concept is basically a slide rail for second screen, VR and cameras. The second screen can be attached when in handheld mode and a hinge is present so you can use it comfortably like the DS and detached docked for Wii U like experience and you hold it like a gamepad with two joy-con slot, there can be a 2D screen and a 3D screen which have stereoscopic 3D with a slider resulting in it being more expensive. The camera can be attached for AR games or motion sensing similar to what you’ve seen in DSi/3DS and can be detached when docked for not carrying the entire console around, there can be a front camera, two rear camera for zoom in/out and 3D photos and a microphone. VR is currently too expensive for it to be immersive so Nintendo’s VR band is just a plastic band that attaches into your system, allowing for cheaper cost and similar experience for VR games. It’s what I have for the ‘attach’ slide rail accessories, all of them are not bundled and I think Nintendo can go back to the Wii U route of a basic set and a deluxe set with the screen and camera accessories. The console is underpowered so it’s just enough to run first party and a couple third party well with the performance of PS4, Xbox one and steam deck, sitting at 1.5 tflops while portable and 1.8 docked, it’s a new experience but the console will still be backward compatible with switch games and have the successful hybrid from factor. It will not be affected by inflation as it’s cheap to make, standard model for $299 with OLED 5.5” with 64GB of storage and $349 for OLED 7” with 128 GB of storage. I think they would call it ‘Nintendo Attach & Switch’, leaving switch brand to be back. Having a launch in Spring/Summer 2024.
    Games:
-New Super Mario Bros Switch(cross gen game at launch, this one is a bit different, having a shake up with 3D visuals similar to 3D world in Mario maker or donkey Kong, revamped life and coin mechanics and shake up in world theming like a fall theme)
-Super Mario Galaxy Returns(Open world games are hard to develop, I would predict one with bowser’s fury’s vision will still be working in progress as it started development in 2021 so it make more sense to be there in 2027, this one is a galaxy game but having new mechanics like Luma power up and combining themes for new galaxies for a linear experience)
-Donkey Kong: New Jungle(The big 3D donkey Kong that blows people away similar to breath of the wild, must be launch title)
-Mario Kart 9(A twist in Mario Kart but still be Mario Kart, having double kart and item mechanics from Mario Kart: Double Dash meanwhile having new mechanics such as drilling and sky driving)
-Yoshi’s 3D island(3D Yoshi game with a painting like artstyle)
-New Super Mario Party(Balanced better than Super but keeping the dice and other mechanics, boards now have open section similar to partner party and power ups for changing dynamic like fire flower or star)
-Mario Tennis: Ultimate(Similar to Aces, no more rushed game and a new power up mechanic)
-The Legend of Zelda: Master Aircraft(A game focusing on link being big and tiny with traditional mechanics but a couple things brought from the DS zelda)
-Nintendo Land Definitive Edition(Nintendo Land but with more mini game and comes with the second screen)
-Nintendo Play(Launches with the camera and have a couple mini games using it)
-Nintendo Sports(Returns to from with Nintendo Islands for the Mytendos and creative sports games)

On the real, I've prepared myself ever since the DS to say goodbye to Nintendo's current-gen gimmick. But they somehow always finds a way. The touch screen from the DS, the motion controls from the Wii- it all comes back. So they just have to bring back the portability aspect. They've already proved it's a serious competitor to both mobile and console.

The real kicker is Pokémon Gen 10, which one would assume will come Autumn 2025. Console sales are always heavily driven by Pokemon's release time, I think it would be smart to try and line it up as a first year release.

Call it the Nintendo Ultimate and combine all past game consoles - N64, SNES, GameCube, GameBoy, DS, 3DS, Wii, Wii U, and Switch, and allow for all previous games being able to be playable, and possibly purchasable in the eShop too, along with dozens of new games too exclusively for the console. Honestly, I don't know how it would look. Perhaps it would look like the Switch, but slightly smaller, and has slots for old games, plus a closable touch screen like an old flip phone, where you can open it and would be able to have a touch screen much like the DS/3DS. Who knows, though. It's just a thought.

I think it's likely Nintendo airs more on coasting off of the Switch than creating something new, probably in the format of a simply more powerful Switch much like the New 3DS. I recall hearing Doug Bowser discussing something along the lines of "using the Switch to redefine a console's life cycle" which would track with what I've stated.
That being said, I have to say that it is almost guaranteed that this new console will not be anymore near comparable to the Steam Deck's performance, even if it is released in some years from now. Consoles are always behind on the newest hardware, Nintendo consoles being consistently considerably further behind PlayStation or Xbox. Honestly, I think the best that can be expected is for the new hypothetical console to be on par with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One generation in terms of power. It should be noted that Nintendo is generally very skilled in optimizing their games to run impressively on their lower-end hardware, so how well Nintendo games (which tend to be less resource intensive anyway) run is difficult to predict specifically. Judging by flagship titles like ToTK being capped at 30FPS (which in 2023 is frankly pathetic), I think it's fair to say that Nintendo is beginning to struggle to optimize their games for modern gaming's increasing performance demands all while maintaining low-end hardware. All that considered, comparable performance to the Steam Deck is something I would bet good money against.
The only way I can imagine Nintendo consoles coming near Steam Deck (or even PlayStation/Xbox) performance is if they make notable price increases (relative to old consoles) which would be problematic for a variety of reasons. Nintendo's low-end hardware allows them to occupy a cheaper, budget-friendly, casual niche within console gaming that they basically have cornered. Pumping up the price would make Nintendo have to compete more directly with Sony and Microsoft which they absolutely do not want to have to do anymore than they already do. This outcome is interesting to speculate about considering Steam does seem to be trying to enter the handheld market in a way which is somewhat threatening to Nintendo's domination of it. Nintendo pumping up the hardware and price too much to keep up with the performance demand gap which, as mentioned before, is becoming harder and harder to do bridge with optimization, would weaken their edge competitively with the Steam Deck.
Lots of this is speculation based on my own perception of the gaming industry at the moment and may be misleading or incorrect but based on all of this, I think the most likely scenario is for a "New Nintendo Switch" which is just better enough than the classic Switch to get games to a consistent 60FPS. Same software with full compatibility with Switch games and accessories, purely a performance increase.

I think a cool gimmick for a new Nintendo switch would be the ability to fold it. (Either vertically or horizontally) like a Samsung phone. Where the screen folds too so there wouldn’t be a hinge down the center of the console. it would still have its handheld and tv mode. But now with the addition to fold.this would make it more portable like the DS. While still retaining the initial versatility that made it so popular. Some draw backs to this possibility are that the new joycons would have flat joysticks and a lip around the perimeter of the joycons and console. To allow folding. And the possibility of the foldable screens being defective on the first hypothetical launch. Like the first line of the aforementioned folding Samsung smartphones. This is just a baseless theory/wild guess though.

The problem with a hybrid system with 1080p in portable mode is that we already have a case study today on how well that would work - the Steam Deck and other Switch-clones out there have been able to beef up their hardware power but with a huge sacrifice in battery life and form fact which, frankly, do not meet Nintendo’s quality standards. Who really wants a portable console that will last less than 2 hours, with a bulky form factor? And that’s because the Steam Deck isn’t even at 1080p.. it’s at around 800p. So I think Switch probably hits the sweet spot at 720p, which looks solid enough and will grant a handheld system with a long-enough battery life and a thin form factor. I have no doubt that technology is advancing fast enough for us to have this later on, but I still think we are a few years out from have a Steam Deck-like system with a thin shape and that sips energy rather than gulps it in mouthfuls… and that can be produced in mass qualities.

I definitely agree that the style of the menus etc. of the switch are so simple, which is kind of the direction of design in general is seems; simple = better. But I would love to see more personality, especially with themes, I still can't believe no themes were ever released for the switch, they were a huge part of the 3DS. Great video though!

Just 4K Graphics while docked and an HD Oled screen would be great. Wireless charging or some sort of alternative to the bottom plug in would be great. And finally Bluetooth for wireless headsets and cross platform online multiplayer would really elevate this system up as a portable yet also equal alternative to Xbox and PlayStation.

If they make a new MarioKart they should have all the old courses included, but in like a little side folder type deal, that way you can encourage people to play the new courses which are at the forefront, but the option for all the old ones is still there. This would also make the launch of the new Mariokart sting a whole let less for people who bought the dlc if it comes out soon.

The name I'd want Nintendo to give to their next console is Nintendo Next. Simple and relevant as well as futuristic. It is also the name closest to the code name they gave to Nintendo Switch when it wasn't released yet.
Features/Games I'd want to have for the next console are the following: (regardless if they would retain the Switch Backward compatibilty or not:
    1. VR Games capability and exclusive VR Titles, (Similar to PS5) as well as accessories and add ons (wireless headset, a sword, a realistic bow that really has rubber or string attached to it - you know like it feels real during gameplay.
And I hope the next Mario Kart and Zelda will have the VR Capability too. Just imagining how Immersive it will be excites me.
A remake of the Zelda Minish Cap in VR, OMG imagine the experience of being small and exploring the Minish Woods and meeting the Picoris but in VR.
    2. Ability to gain trophies/certificate/points system(or any kind of recognition when completing quests or levels) (Similar to PS3-psvita,ps4 and ps5)
Nintendo why can't you make this happen?
    3. A Pokemon Game with 2d HD graphics. Fully polished, no glitches and packed with contents. A combination of all regions would be great. Gamefreak, No more new pokemon and gimicks please. and I'd love the Title to be Pokemon Together lol.

Add at least one scrollwheel, and ideally a rotational wheel with force feedback around the left joystick to better simulate a steering wheel in a racing game. I don't understand why no console has ever featured scrollwheels. Computer mice have them since decades. This would give for cheap and at very little risk another dimension to Nintendo games, like for faster weapon selection in FPS games. I think they should bet on adding more unique controls designed specifically for some genres of games. Here are two simple ideas that cover racing and FPS genres. More would be even nicer.
Also, I don't understand why Nintendo, who love to build accessories, don't embed an Arduino, along with a RGB lamp to simulate ambient lighting, a photolight sensor to detect if the player is playing in the dark or not, a mini fan to simulate wind, an infrared lamp to simulate heat. I understand that adding fragrances is not ideal, especially in a portable system (maybe as an option on the deck?), because glycerin creates a very thin layer of grease in the long run on your furniture (damaging them, this is why smells were ditched for the Xbox during prototyping). You could buy and plug a bigger Nintendo lamp, fan and IR light on the deck in order to facilitate use of those features for multiplayer scenarios.
One extra feature that would be very cheap to do but that would add a lot of depth to experiences is detecting the distance and position of the player in order to display 3D content that change perspective. This would be awesome for discovering secrets and would add a lot of immersion in virtual spaces without going VR. Exactly like that Johnny Lee thing who used a Wii but flipped everything side. Would also be super easy to add for all developers, unlike VR. Then, bring back autostereoscopic lenticular 3D. The best would be to have 4 superposed transparent OLED screens, so unlike lenticular 3D the horizontal resolution would not be divided by 2 and some 3D effect would help to distinguish the HUD from the game and the game background. That would eat a LOT of battery and be very expensive to build though so the lenticular approach is still the best one.
Honnestly, I think Nintendo should buy back Tilt Five and improve over their tabletop gaming concept. That is innovative, more social (perfect for Nintendo brand), high-tech, and would totally rock since it would be able to detect the chip on Amiibos and bring them to life on the table, even becoming the controller. Of course, robotic Amiibos would rock.
There are so many ways Nintendo could and should innovate.

That starting year line-up sounds like too much. I think a new 3D Mario for the launch game, and Metriod Prime 4 as the holiday release sounds more realistic. And have a few supplemental games like a new Mario Baseball, and a Kirby side-scrolling platformer racing game. Then having Switch games and reusing the online service continuing the current games on the platform carried over as backwards compatible would be a major selling point. Also, they could announce a new platform like the Gamecube being added exclusively to the new hardware. Then have a few 3rd party games too much for the original Switch, like Street Fighter 6, Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth, and Elden Ring to throw out a few examples.

I think the Nintendo Fuse would be a cool name...fusion of portable and home play... I agree tho that I'd much prefer if the new system to be a proper next gen console not portable... just keep the Switch/Lite to fill the space the 3DS left and the new console its own thing. No reason they can't support both!

    Here’s my idea
    Nintendo legend
Combines the looks of 2 popular Nintendo consoles
    Nintendo switch and 3DS
    Featuring:
Themes from all over the Nintendo multiverse each one have its own unique music when equipped
Mii verse lets you post online and get miis from all over the world and from your friends
    Street pass
Let’s you play street pass games from the 3ds era as well as street pass games Who are exclusive to that console
    Hybrid console
Mii maker with music includes every single mii part from every console
    And introducing the Avatar maker
Pretty similar to the mii maker but it have parts you will never see in the mii maker like the retro mii maker parts as it looked like if they planned it on the original Nintendo DS but with better quality
Otherwise everything else is the same as the Nintendo switch

I think that the Nintendo Switch(OLED) Nintendo Switch (Lite) and the Super Switch 2 will give the community what they deserve in a console. I find it saddened that they haven't released a new console as PlayStation or Microsoft has. Though, I have to admit that Nintendo is brewing up something desirable. My theory is that the Super Switch 2 will contain the VR capabilities a very High resolution output for "Docking" & Handheld mode. I really think that Nintendo will eventually dabble in VR Soon.

Nintendo just aren't going to make the new versions of joycons bigger. Nintendo designs family consoles, and the Switch is supposed to be more accessible for children to use than an Xbox or Playstation - hence the button setup being very simple and easy to reach for smaller hands. They're not going to give up that market angle. The Pro Controller is Nintendo's answer to adult fans who find the base design uncomfortable, though I agree it's an unideal one. I'd hope if perhaps Nintendo would release a console with a choice of controller, but that sadly feels unlikely..
