Ed, I am so envious that you do not have a deadline to get back home to the United Kingdom. "At your own pace" is wonderful way to live your life. Sadly, most people can't do the same. Everybody is caught up in their own lives and lose track of time. Before we know it, everything else passed us by. I've watched all your videos and I look forward to the new ones as well. God bless you! Safe journeys always!

Another GREAT video Ed! I know you're well into the USA now, but I assume you know the importance of "listening" to your body, backing off, and taking some additional rest when needed. Beck off and take it a little easy when times get difficult and you'll make it through (as I'm sure you've done many times over). Keep on keeping on! Love this video(s)!!!

The positivt and willpower that you usually show, almost seems superhuman, its a big inspiration to me and its an even bigger inspiration when after moments like these with your back, you are still pushing through and your determination is still on an all time high. Thanks for sharing your journey !

I was suddenly affected by sciatica when I was your age and it's a LOT to deal with then you're so young. You know older people complain about bad backs all the time but it does feel silly to have the issue when you're that age. My back remains delicate but THE GOOD NEWS about first having the issue when young is you learn how to deal with it at an age when most only first start to struggle. At 56 my posture is pretty good, I know how to sit well and, most importantly of all, I know instantly how to deal with the very first twinge and not let it get worse. Pilates helps me as does regular swimming but mostly it's about understanding just how important one's spine is and taking care of it in every way you can.

Wow suspenseful cliffhanger! I know this was taken like 3 months ago and you've probably dealt with your back issues, but I also have lower back issues and the way I deal with it is a nice stiff lumbar supporter belt and basic yoga stretches twice a day. The supporter belt cinched very tightly will get you through the unicycle rides, but it usually takes time to completely fix the back issue.

If you’re on a long bike tour the only thing I could recommend is taking aspirin and taking a day or two just to rest and yoga stretches for the back!

If it happens again & you can get a hold of some ice, try icing your back 10 mins on, 10 mins off. Several times. Together with so e ibuprofen, this works for me. Good luck bro & stay safe.

Glad to see you are in the USA finally. I am keeping an eye on your location in hopes of possibly meeting up with you. On bit of advice, you've been sleeping on the ground for basically 2.5 yrs, try stretching a bit before just hopping out of your tent from now on. I always try to pull my knees, one at a time, up to my chest and hold for a few seconds while still lying on my back whenever camping. Curl your toes and feet up stretching your calves and also lightly twist at the hips.

Cmo'n Ed give us an answer. I have no guess maybe 1700-2000 Miles per tire, I truly have no idea but for some unknown reason need to know how many tiers I would need if I was a uni-cyclist traveling the continents of the globe, I presume it would have to be about half of the tires that a normal cyclist doing the same journey seeing as how there is only one wheel instead of two to share the load.

It was actually kind of a bad coincidence that this happened shortly after leaving your parents. Sometimes, those weird pains seem to come from nowhere. However, taking it from your videos, this is only your second serious injury in years of traveling the world on a bike! I may say, you have been very lucky. I'm not sure if this is the right relation, but I guess I know how that feels. After hauling heavy shit over a whole day, my back really refuses to move as well. I can force myself, but this is never good advice. When your body feels bad, there is a reason for it, and you better don't ignore it.

    Acute back spasm, I assume.
    After a night of drinking?
Yes or no, dehydration can be a killer on the back. You've been pushing yourself for two years, come dangerously close to major electrolyte imbalance (a friend of mine suffered this and he's never been the same - careful!). In other words, a good recipe for back issues.
Hydrate and stretch. Be "back smart," or in other words, learn about back health and what to avoid. Ice and anti-inflammatories should get you straight. But there also may be more to back problems than we know, or are just coming to realize...
I was on my back for two weeks due to acute back muscle spasms after three years of intense bike racing. Lots of miles in my last year with two national championship events raced, my back was toast. Then a weekend away at a wedding and WAY too much champagne did it in. It took two weeks to be able to walk again, and then a few years to regain "normalcy." And when I was in the best shape of my life. But I didn't listen to the signs. Shooting pains down my left leg during races were key. This sciatica was telling me I was doing something wrong!
I eventually recovered and resumed normal life. But I would encounter back "episodes" every so often; I don't know, maybe every six months or a year? Either way, I would sometimes be incapacitated and it sucked. One of the worst happened right before a long Sierra mountain bike ride. As I was waiting for friends to get ready to ride, I was warming up and screwing around. As I rode a wheelie, I felt my back go "Pop!" and man, I KNEW something was definitely amiss. But I really wanted to show this ride (Hole in the ground) to a friend, so I went on as planned. After three hours, I was CRAWLING back home. Simply miserable. Ibuprofen and aspirin were useless. I then discovered naproxen sodium (Aleve). Wow, a savior!
Then about six years ago, I upped my dental hygiene routine. I went from flossing once a day and brushing twice a day, to flossing & brushing twice a day. Flossing felt so good at night, I figured why not do it after morning breakfast. Only until recently did I realize that I have had NO back episodes since improving my dental hygiene. Coincidence? Maybe. My general health hasn't been improving over that time - in fact, weight gain has unfortunately been pretty constant, so it's not like I also happened to get into much better shape in that same time period.
Anecdotal? Yes. But I also heard about a radio producer who suffered over a decade of back suffering, despite doing yoga, eating well and taking care of himself. No explanation for his terrible back situation. He visits his dentist one day and the dentist says, "You seem to have something going on; I see signs of chronic infection, so you should have a CT scan of your head and spine." Long story short, he discovered a tooth infection had spread into his spinal fluid and into his back! This may indeed explain his chronic back pain for so long. He had NO idea he had an undiagnosed tooth issue that had gone (somewhat) systemic. The guy then quit the radio show, so I never heard the conclusion of the story.
But I do know that medicine is learning how important dental hygiene is to general health. Like for example, if you have pretty much ANY surgical procedure planned, you are required to get a dental bill of good health prior to any work. So perhaps our teeth are far more crucial to overall health than we ever knew.

lightdark00 i dont even know what to say to you ... as I am a leader in Neighbors Against Racism in my community not only that this conversation is regarding speciesism and is related to an animal topic nothing more I simply asked him if he thought it was okay to eliminate a species because he thought one was overpopulating and just to clear one thing up I'm using a broken phone with a horrible iOS system that tends to mess up my texts before I have a chance to correct them don't be calling people racist unless you know truly what they are I mean I have dreads and I'm wearing a tie dye shirt in my profile photo

The impact of hedgehogs from the doc website page.
      "Impacts
The extent to which hedgehogs impact upon the New Zealand environment is only recently beginning to be understood in any detail. Here is a summary of findings:
Hedgehogs are proven to be a major predator on eggs of riverbed breeding birds such as banded dotterel and black-fronted tern, and have been known to kill and eat chicks of a variety of ground-nesting birds.
In the MacKenzie Basin (South Island), hedgehogs have been found to be responsible for one in five predator attacks on nests.
Hedgehogs have a voracious appetite for invertebrates and take many local endemic species.
They are known to eat the rare giant native centipede, wētā, and other rare insects.
They have been known to eat the native snail Wainuia urnula. Lowland populations of Powelliphanta snails may also be severely affected, particularly the Patarau and Otaki sub-species. Only smaller (juvenile) snails are eaten, but this severely affects recruitment and population recovery.
Hedgehogs also prey upon lizards, particularly in cooler periods when lizard activity slows. Skinks are particularly at risk.
It is possible that hedgehogs also prey on endemic frog species, as they are known to take introduced frogs and their range overlaps with some New Zealand frog species."

madhouse5213 sorry maybe I worded that incorrectly what you're saying about how head hedgehogs are just pests that can be done rid of is completely incorrect there may be an abundance of the animal but for you to just say don't be sad if a couple are dead is completely unreasonable and just the fact that you're sharing a government page tells me you're government brainwashed human being that I'm not going to continue a conversation with ⚛☮
