  • Your Path to United Airlines: bit.ly/UALPilotApplication ... One of the best parts of being an airline employee is the chance to travel around the world nearly cost-free. I've flown hundreds of times using these perks, touching every continent, sometimes in first or business class! Non-revenue travel (called nonrevving) is something nearly all airline employees share, so you don't have to be flight crew like me to enjoy it. It's often called flying space-available or "SA," because space has to be available on the plane for you to get a seat. Non-rev travel has made the world a lot smaller, putting otherwise unaffordable trips within reach.

My non-rev privilege's have let me see the world in ways I couldn't imagine, Venice, Tokyo, Brazil, you name it. I even went to Switzerland once to get my Mom a box of chocolates. I love my job as a baggage handler and the non-rev perks are like a whole other cake with extra icing. When I'm short on free time I like to go to Key West, Florida. It's a short flight from my station and the beach is right next to the airport. I get off the plane relax by my favorite coconut tree for a couple of hours and come back home refreshed.

I was ground crew for United stationed at SFO, and non revving was literally the thing I was looking forward to doing the most when I had my off days. I remember deciding to fly 13 hours to Frankfurt for a beer and 7 hours later flying back...just because I wanted to. I remember ID90'ing on BA to London just to get a flight on the Queen of the skies...also I remember doing countless trips to Hawaii....just because I could. I do have to say I had a knack for somehow always getting on a non rev flight and never missing one. The only time I didn't nonrev was to Sydney because it was my longest flight and it was my first time flying international...I paid $800 for a last minute ticket...which would have cost me $2000 as a regular joe.

Agree...just flying somewhere for no reason. Flew a number of times to Hawaii just for Dinner, then flying back NYC for a slice of Pizza, then to DC to watch the USMC Drill Team perform at the memorial. Listing to fly to Paris, getting 1st Class....or just deciding to list for the flight at Gate B10, and going where it took me. Now I'm in the 91/135 side, so no more "free" trips for me.

I can't tell you how nice it is to have non Rev as a privilege. (I am blessed to be a ramper) It helped me in college to fly home close to the holidays to see my folks. Helped me and my now wife go to Italy.
And when I need to get there and have to buy a seat it's nice to get at my airline 20% off a confirmed seat and if you add in 100 dollars round trip in bags it can be a savings so now when I need to go and get there and can justify a ticket I first look and see and do the math and if my airline is let's say only 100-200 bucks more I may as well book on mine and use the miles I get down the line for a huge trip which I can also get 20% off the total miles needed.

Some of us had a hundred fully transferable y-Fare tickets for nearly anywhere, positive space, many First Class. I never sold mine, others did, but it made holiday travel easy as. That is neat that you as a pilot can ride in the jump seat in the cockpit, even on other airlines with the agreements. It must be neat to compare the cabins and cockpits of the different airlines and airplanes that you get to fly on. I have had the chance to sit in the the cockpit of one of the first Untied 737 Max 8 planes when it when into service and the pilots were telling me about some of the differences in the Max Cockpit from the NG Cockpit, like the Heads-up displays. They told me that they weren’t functional yet because they hadn’t rolled out the training yet to the pilots, but that they were going to become a standard feature of them going forward. @@anabilrahmangaming7622 I'll be honest with you. It's not up to you. You are only 18, so by the time you are at a major, the 757 and 767 will be on their way to retirement (if they are not already retired). You can't choose a fleet that's no longer flying. However, you can apply to cargo airlines as the 757 and 767 will have at least another decade or two there. But at the end of the day, they will eventually be retired before you reach retirement age. By then, you can either fly the new generation of planes or quit. Your choice!

I flew with my dad on Delta in 2007, back in the apparently-crappy wavy gravy days. We were stuck finding a flight from ATL to IND. Instead we *B A R E L Y* hopped on a flight to FWA(Ft Wayne) a couple hours drive away from Indianapolis.
We were *RUSHING* through those Atlanta terminals. Stressful at the time but makes for good memories years later 😆

I'm the "registered friend" with flight benefits from my dear friend, a 25 year United employee. Boy, is it a game. In the old days with 747s there was almost always space. Now, we're lucky to get the worst seat...any seat, and we're grateful to get it!
I'm hoping to go to Buenos Aires next week!
I'm still thrilled for this benefit.

I retired from a major airline and non-rev'd many times. I wasn't flight ops or inflight so I didn't get the ability to jumpseat. It was a blast when I was younger but as I got older and my schedule was more rigid I started to buy my flights. However I did got to Ireland, Canada, the Caribbean, Vegas, Phoenix, and California multiple times. Can't tell you how many times I got amazing first class seats but also can't tell you how many nights I spent sleeping in an airport. Great memories of my youth and will give me stories to tell for years.

I used to work for a major airline and I rarely used the non-rev benefit (maybe 1 time with employer airline & 1 time on zed fare out of my 3 year in B6). It is a challenge especially you see the flight have over 50 seats open but by the time you get to the gate the flight is full. When I had vacation I just purchased a flight just so I dont stress myself and not waste any time on my precious Vacation time.
