- Big Jim Video Productions recently had the honor of visiting the Strasburg Rail Road as a part of the NRHS 2013 Fall Conference - a quick private charter was held with the railroad's first locomotive - the 20-ton gasoline-powered Plymouth locomotive. The train was a recreation of Strasburg's very first passenger train on December 30, 1958 - powered by the same Plymouth #1 engine, built new for the railroad in 1926, and a single coach. A few photo runbys were held along the line, and it was BJVP's first time seeing the engine in action. Enjoy Part 1 of the day's activities, and stay tuned for Part 2, a visit to the SMS Rail Lines shops in southern New Jersey. Enjoy!
A Plymouth HL. A rare beast indeed. I love the sound of the Climax R6U engine under the hood. It looks very well cared for.
also brings to mind sounds of 1920s and 30s airplane motors.
the bass in my headphones with this is awesomeXD
"20-ton gasoline-powered Plymouth diesel"
gasoline-powered Plymouth diesel
*It runs on gas*
S H I N Y Yes it does. Figured most people will think of it as either a diesel or a steam locomotive - that’s why I described it that way...
1:44 Motorboat Sounds
LOL indeed!
That thing sounds like an old aero engine idling before take off.
Love how it popped just a bit around 0:30
I remember that little engine back in the 1950s, the first time I ever saw the Strasburg.
Wow! Must be pretty cool to see it still running.
Just for the record, both #1 and #2 are powered by large gasoline Climax engines. #2 is a 4 cylinder and #1 is a 6 cylinder.
Hearing a new cast P3 on it just doesnt sound right lol
the engine was bought by the railroad in 1926....the only engine until it became a museum in the 60's
It actually has a really good sounding horn
nice video big Jim of the diesel engine pulling the passenger car in Strasbourg pa.
Thanks!
Your welcome.
Plymouth 1 is such a great lico. I wish they used her more
Me too!! She's undergoing repairs/maintenance right now, but she'll be out and about this year as shop switcher and stuff...
nice video! the horn on the Plymouth sounds similar to the horn that was on AWVR 1206
Jim, very nice Thank you for sharing.
That little loco packs a wallop!
Absolutely!!
These it run still?
It still does!
Awesome video
Thank you!!
Nice Little Locomotive
1:44 sounds like a helicopter
LOL!!
hahaha, what a funny little engine! Great shot with the Amtrak train!!
What's the transmission in this thing? It sounded like you were changing (shifting, in 'Murrican!) gear there at one point. Is it still the original gasoline engine?
+Steve Young Sadly, I'm not sure what transmission is in this - but I believe it is still the original gasoline engine. :)
If it's all original, & still the typical chain drive, then it's got a 4spd gearbox mounted in the floor. There's 1 pedal that controls the clutch & if the pedal is pushed to the floor, it activates the locomotive brake. The museum I work at has a 1941 all original Plymouth 30T, that's pretty much the same set up as all those little switchers had.
Plymouth has a 1 and Thomas there also?! Thomas : YOU DARE OPPOSE ME LOCO
HAHA I wonder who would win that one...
Big Jim Video Productions I think Thomas might win because from the looks of it Thomas is a lot bigger and is stronger from what I been seeing
Love how the bell is completely useless on this engine
Out of all horns, it has a P3?
sputta sputta sputta sputta sputta
She's an old engine - currently undergoing some repairs (or recently underwent some repairs) - but I love that little engine!
Hehe I want one like that. It's a cute little thing
Awesome I've always wondered about that Plymouth No.1 do u know if they still use No.2 Plymouth?
awesome thanks for the info and sharing your video
what horn would you say the loco's wearing?
I volunteer at the New York Museum of Transportation near Rochester, NY and I plan on restarting a project we stopped in 1981. I am planning on rebuilding our 1937 35t Plymouth ML8 locomotive. I am wondering where I may find diagrams to put her back together such as wiring, LeRoi Engine, and any other materials. Maybe even repowering her with Cummings or V8 350 engine any information would be helpful.
If you're not already on there, go to RYPN.org and post this request there. That is a railway preservation site and you should be able to find the answers you need there!
Big Jim Video Productions, thank you very much I will do that
what class is little Diesel shunter engine ?
It's a Plymouth engine (the company that made it) and as I've been told, it's actually a gasoline-powered engine - so it's not technically a "diesel" - but for simplicity's sake - I think of it as a diesel anyway :)
But it has a horn and diesel engine
He looks pretty cute as a small tank engine.
+Jian Laws (lil-Catty) Most, if not all, locomotives have a horn. As they said above, it is a gasoline (petrol) engine, not a diesel. This railroad is too small to need to classify its locomotives, so it is simply referred to by its road number or the manufacturer's name - Plymouth.
Big Jim Video Productions does Strasbourg own that Plymouth Locomotive
What kind of engine does the switcher use? V8 lmao
Not sure, but it is gasoline-powered!
Horn???
It looks pretty silly tho
Ehhhhh a bit. But it's what powered the railroad in its first few years of tourist service...
