  • Big Jim Video Productions recently had the honor of visiting the Strasburg Rail Road as a part of the NRHS 2013 Fall Conference - a quick private charter was held with the railroad's first locomotive - the 20-ton gasoline-powered Plymouth locomotive. The train was a recreation of Strasburg's very first passenger train on December 30, 1958 - powered by the same Plymouth #1 engine, built new for the railroad in 1926, and a single coach. A few photo runbys were held along the line, and it was BJVP's first time seeing the engine in action. Enjoy Part 1 of the day's activities, and stay tuned for Part 2, a visit to the SMS Rail Lines shops in southern New Jersey. Enjoy!

    A Plymouth HL. A rare beast indeed. I love the sound of the Climax R6U engine under the hood. It looks very well cared for.

      S H I N Y Yes it does. Figured most people will think of it as either a diesel or a steam locomotive - that’s why I described it that way...

    Just for the record, both #1 and #2 are powered by large gasoline Climax engines. #2 is a 4 cylinder and #1 is a 6 cylinder.

    What's the transmission in this thing? It sounded like you were changing (shifting, in 'Murrican!) gear there at one point. Is it still the original gasoline engine?

    • @Bigjimvideo
      @Bigjimvideo  Před 8 lety +3

      +Steve Young Sadly, I'm not sure what transmission is in this - but I believe it is still the original gasoline engine. :)

    • @MontanyeModels
      @MontanyeModels Před 7 lety +5

      If it's all original, & still the typical chain drive, then it's got a 4spd gearbox mounted in the floor. There's 1 pedal that controls the clutch & if the pedal is pushed to the floor, it activates the locomotive brake. The museum I work at has a 1941 all original Plymouth 30T, that's pretty much the same set up as all those little switchers had.

    I volunteer at the New York Museum of Transportation near Rochester, NY and I plan on restarting a project we stopped in 1981. I am planning on rebuilding our 1937 35t Plymouth ML8 locomotive. I am wondering where I may find diagrams to put her back together such as wiring, LeRoi Engine, and any other materials. Maybe even repowering her with Cummings or V8 350 engine any information would be helpful.

    what class is little Diesel shunter engine ?

    • @Bigjimvideo
      @Bigjimvideo  Před 8 lety +2

      It's a Plymouth engine (the company that made it) and as I've been told, it's actually a gasoline-powered engine - so it's not technically a "diesel" - but for simplicity's sake - I think of it as a diesel anyway :)

    • @lilcattythewildnorwester7786
      @lilcattythewildnorwester7786 Před 8 lety

      But it has a horn and diesel engine

    • @steveyoung8876
      @steveyoung8876 Před 8 lety +1

      +Jian Laws (lil-Catty) Most, if not all, locomotives have a horn. As they said above, it is a gasoline (petrol) engine, not a diesel. This railroad is too small to need to classify its locomotives, so it is simply referred to by its road number or the manufacturer's name - Plymouth.
