You may take them for granted, but your teeth are a marvel. They break up all your food over the course of your life, while being strong enough to withstand breakage themselves. How do they do it? Peter S. Ungar traces the evolution of mammalian molars from primitive cone-like structures to the myriad forms of today’s species, from lions to cows to people.
Lesson by Peter S. Ungar, animation by Cabong Studios.

0:18 Tooth has teeth
*Toothception*
Does one tooth of the tooth's teeth also have teeth?
TRIKEN stop it your making my teeth i mean head hurt..
*BUT* do the teeth of the tooth of the tooth's teeth also have teeth?
that's the question :)
TRIKEN STOP
Awesome. This inspired me to brush my teeth at least once a week.
That's overkill, once a month and you'll keep more of your bacterial friends.
But your mouth is gonna smell like a cows behind
alex murphy you dont like that smell?
@Jello Bean
Take the joke bro
@@AethernaLuxen He can't.
I didn't know the difference between _hard_ and _tough_ 😉
Onlime hard is just if it won't break at all....... tough is if when it does break, it won't spread.
The Story of Life
awesome, thanks!
@TED-Ed hardness is generally the difficulty of scratching a material not to force, so shooting arrows is misleading
So did I

3:53 *W O W*
"The myriad molars of modern mammals..."
I love that phrase.
Thank you!
*rubs tongue across enamel*
Bioglass. Biomin-F, Biomin-C. Now, last I read on these things was the FDA would not allow Sensodyne Repair & Protect with Bioglass in the states because of drug classifications and active ingredients maybe around 2013. This material temporarily binds to your teeth mimicking the enamel layer, sealing over the exposed tubules (I probably used the wrong term).
This video is really amazing and informative as always. But one thing that bothers me is that it hasn't told us much about how teeth actually evolved as a whole. Before this video there was one about the evolution of the eye which did a better job at elaborating the development of complexity over time. So watching this video about teeth evolving really makes me think about problems like when was the first form of teeth? Or what is the simplest form of teeth found in nature, and in the history of evolution? And how did it gain complexity through time?...
I remember hearing in another video that teeth are one of the unusual evolutionary developments that can’t be pin pointed with our current data, and the current theory is they evolved from scales on the face. Seems far fetched but I remember this being from a source that was mainly educational in nature.
0:12 a tooth with teeth
His teeth have teeth
The one that is missing got bigger and covered the smaller ones ;)
3:08 My goodness, that's an orthographic projection! Never thought I'd see one of those outside an engineer document.
Hahaha, the 'wow' sound! :D
My name is Joey I heard that too, kek
My name is kiely
When?
Usually I easily get bored by these educational videos...but the amazing animation in these makes it interesting to watch and learn. THANKS TED ED TEAM and keep up the good work :)
I gotta wonder if, and hope that we will ever be able to repair or create new teeth for those unfortunate enough to have theirs damaged or removed.
You can plant a fake tooth
Fill a tooth cavity
Gordon Tang well, that's not really the same.
Tyler Harris I really wonder why it hasn't been done. My brother grew his 2 fronts 3 times naturally but I've heard of something being planted so a child can regrow teeth
Im getting 4 molars removed for my braces... Why world.
Incisor: Tell us clear cut what happened
Molar: Yeah, you are grinding my gears now
Canine: Relax, I am getting to the point
Wow
This was really interesting for me, thank you ted-ed. A perfect video for me, keep on going everybody love your channel:)
Watching this while have really bad tooth ache.
AJacob217 Watching this after my apointment to the dentist ^^
very great animations! thanks very much for the entertaining hard work!
The job in the animation of this one was stellar, congratulations to the author.
Cristóbal Herrero Iglesias its amazing 🙌🏼🙌🏼
what? It was made by Cabong Studios/ Brazil

Not as good as the other animation ones.
Great video guys! Thanks for *filling* me in.
Sebastian Elytron 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
Haa, that 'cracked' me up.
Sebastian Elytron omg YAS
I had been meaning to *brush* up on this subject.
I have 'teeth'
Fun fact you didn’t mention. A lot of animals have Baby Teeth. If you’re a pet owner, you already know this. We found all of our eldest Dog’s baby teeth, but we found only one for the youngest one. .. We suspect he ate them.
*brace* yourselves for a great *dental* pun
😂
The Science Biome There’s the door. Now get out.
Outta here
😂😂😂😂
Lol
The Science Biome I
I love the animation, thanks Cabong!
Animation is stunning as usual 😍
One of the most important topic that i will do presentation for it as a Dentist ..
Beautiful animation! And a thoughtful lesson.
I usually don't brush my teeth before sleep, but this video made me do it.
Tats y my tooth enamel went off..
Good thing according to TED-ED, dentin can regenerate. Dentin is like the HP of your tooth that can regenerate. Enamel is like armor for the tooth that can't regenerate.
The animation on this was fantastic!
Teeth animation = teeth with a teeth
Hey TED-Ed I was wondering if you could make a video on what birthmarks are and what causes them. Thanks in advance if you can.
Why do crocodiles and sharks have regenerative teeth?
I don't think they're regenerative, they just make more if one falls out
err not really. it does have a whole field devoted to it, not very "mysterious"
Their teeth don't repair. They just made entire new ones
They dont regenerate. They regrow much like yours do at a young age, except they do not stop.
Tanner W to make themselves even scarier
Those animations were really amusing. I liked the different styles.
"Myriad molars of modern mammals'
Mmmmm, alliteration
I had to fight to keep that one in!
This is a really cool hybrid of animation.
Useful information
Very informative video 👍
I agree this statement that the sound is nice and i learn about your topic.

3:53 they really added the "wow" guy meme 😂😂

The style of animation used reminds me of cuphead
ehhhh...
it reminds me of old cartoon animation
the animation style for cuphead was based off of 1930's cartoons
You're the first comment that doesn't contain a pun
Same
Nice ❤️
3:54 reaction of my dentist after seeing that i still have my milk teeth
Keep going and learn with TedEd!!!1!!1!1!1!
I though it was the history and evolution on how we learned to brush our teeth and keep them healthy and how we evolved the practice.
My girlfriend Hazel Brugger once said that teeth are a part of the skeleton, that's why she don't likes to laugh, because it's weird to see other peoples skeleton.
I don't take them for granted
1:57 Got a heart attack thinking that my alarm was going off
awesome
Bears have the same types and arrangements of teeth as humans. Just a fun fact I thought I'd put out there. :)
waiting for the next episode in the moment of vision
This video is so cute!
GOOD VIDEO
3:01 did he just say “fishes”😂💀
Yes. Scientists call multiple species of fish "fishes", but multiple individuals of one species "fish"
someone raise the salary of Ted-Ed animator....
3:53 meme
I loved how the tooth fairy danced and shook it while destroying someone's teeth. All in a day's work I guess, here's your dime. LOL
I think the toothfairy was lovable
don't think we didn't recognize that "wow" at the end.
Our teeth are basically just mini hydrolic presses.
