Interesting that _as a player,_ Luke always tries to use charm & persuasion to avoid or prevent combat, but as a GM, he immediately starts throwing un-persuadable, charm-proof golems and undead at the party! It's almost like he wanted to prevent Luke from derailing the GM's plans! 😀
He knows what he would do
Mike got some good charmin im Blades.
It’s the same instinct for every player-to-DM. I try to make my characters useful no matter how much you remove from them, they can be handcuffed, stripped away from their magic, armorless, or weaponless and they can still function. In my subconscious as a DM, I would for some prepare for someone with my characters’ strengths and weaknesses.
Maybe that’s why I based my campaigns after projects like Suicide Squad, The Losers, and Peaky Blinders lol.
Merilwen confidently having very poor judgement is my new favourite thing 😂
Notable lack of situational and environmental awareness is her calling card, always a good time
1:35:18
Watching Johnny's DM eyes flair up after Ellen conjured water on a grease fire.
You could make a GIF out of that.
I Loved Johnny's face when Luke was so generous when haggling with the team. remaining true to Dob's level of money awareness fantastic. 🤣
27:50 Johnny's little smile in response to Andy immediately derailing Luke's plans by suggesting they go to the gift shop first :D
Luke learns the nightmare that the group puts Johnny through every session.
Also: Swingball, or to North Americans: Tetherball.
Merilwen has successfully weaponized 2 separate kitchen appliances
the way Luke visibly relaxes when Corazon heads off the plan of "Just collapse the entire building"
..and THAT'S the story of how Corazon kicked two nerds to death..
I can't tell if baby-spider-prudence is the terrifying or adorable.
Bit of both, I think
8:23 start of stream
I for one was disappointed it didn’t turn out that Merilwen was a penguin by the end of the episode, given Luke was the GM….
I love everyone's reaction to Baby Prudence. That was a great work by GM Luke, nice episode
Yep, top notch. He turned out to be quite the GM. I bet Johnny is very proud.
Move over Baby Yoda, Baby Pru is far superior in every way
Where’s the scene where Prudence gets turn into a baby?
@@garveyneal1672 1:45:54
Luke did a fantastic job as a DM in the Blades in the Dark series. I hope to see him take up the role of DM in a new series soon! Johnny and the others were awesome as always.
I personally don’t like it but Luke is turning into a really good DM.
Have been binging through these episodes over the last week or so and when johnny popped up I died laughing and had to restart a few times
When Prudence turned into a baby, all I can think about is that scene from The Boys with Butcher holding the laser baby, but it’s eldritch blast.
2:50:34 Corazon reloads his arms scene 💀💀
Baby Prudence was the only real option. Top notch.
Baby prudence was so adorable!! In a mischievous evil tiefling sort of way 😂
8.23 it starts for those that wanna skip the repeating intro music
I love revisiting this adventure spotting new delights each time. This time at 1 hr 29 mins watching Johnny make clear their delight at Lukes lambasting of the rules of DnD
A teething teefling
Every now and again I remember merilwen is the oldest of them. Love that.
0ther than hengist of course
I started my Oxventure adventure with Blades in the Dark, so it was fun to see Luke’s first DM session. A lot of wonderful elements here. Great fun!
Johnny looks so happy when he first comes on as a player.
*they*
I understand that feeling, being a Forever DM.
Yes but he still can’t completely let his inner DM go by telling Luke bits of information he won’t know. How good Luke is shows how Johnny is obviously a good and patient teacher.😊😊
@@timewyrmrevelations7700 *they*
@@LungsOutJem not at the time of recording ;)
Awesome first time DM'ing. So much fun, luaghed so hard. Well done Luke and Johnny for getting this sorted.
I have one burning question. Did the grimoires turn into pamphlets?
I hope so, bc this is adorable to imagine. Just little like folded brochures yapping around her
Original Air Date: Jul 31, 2020
It says that in the description of the video
I still use this to locate videos so I appreciate the work your doing.
The spin-off that could have been:
Raising Prudence. ❤😂
If I’m not mistaken bob at the start is the same Bob that will show up later on in the season finale of this season or next season, who the group attempts to teach how to adventure
You are absolutely right he finally finds them but the best bit is them trying desperately to remember who he is. I know Johnny has folders of notes on everything as it’s the only way he can remember what’s gone before. He is a master DM with the ability to improvise at a moments notice but we all know that look he gets when it goes wrong for him. I often wonder if he has nightmares about being derailed mid adventure I hope not.😅
2:04:13 :Peir Review... I see you and your puns Jonny!
This tickled me so much.
How do they explain dobs absence 10:52 good excuse 13:23dob really is the only one with some morals 17:35 I wish he was rust because he was the closest to being a party member 18:51 lol he slipped back into dm mode
Um, Merilwen, you shouldn't... oh, you figured it out.
Is the watch what happened to Alfred Strangetide?
Or something similar?
Just the kind of subtle retcon I would do to explain the players chaos.
Anti Garlic = Marshmallows
Baby Prudence is the D&D version of Jack Jack from the Incredibles!
48:00 "Your two friends here, at the outset of this journey to get this watch, they appear to have run Hell for leather straight towards grievously bodily harm. Would you describe them as "Bloodthirsty" in general?"
Friend, you do realize that you are talking to Merilwen of "Meat Grinder" fame. She may be the most bloodthirsty of the bunch.
Merilwen is calculated, prudence is evil in the way an upper class suburban kid is an emo goth, dob is careless to the point of war crimes, egbert chooses the exact worst choice on purpose, and Corazon is just trying to survive while appearing cool and prove he's totally not an abandoned rich kid who wishes his dad cared.
great dming luke!
Am I the only one who half expecting that Not-Baby-Prudence should be Grandma-Prudence now.
I'm Baby and Hammer, Baby Prudence has the cutest vocabulary.
Discworld reference for the win
At this point we just as well call our favourite warlock Prudence the Embarrassed 😈 😂
Where do I get baby Prudence merch?😁
9:07 wait what?!!! 48:09 that's just how they operate
I was working and just listening so when Johnny showed up my brain went "is that Luke?? His throat has to hurt, he kinda sounds like ... KASIMIR???" and I stopped everything I was doing to check that Johnny was playing too haha
Gosh, YT just makes the ads twice as loud as the video. Smh hate grabbing my phone every few minutes to turn the volume down, and then 15 sec later again to turn it back up, all while playing fast paced online shooters o.O
That’s the very reason I pay them to be ad free so annoying it’s not as if the team make a lot from allowing it. I do appreciate that it’s not an option for some so I’m not boasting just fortunate.😮
At 2:18:00 now... Merilwen should have created water in the panic room to drown the guy
referring to dob and egbert as the moral core is not inaccurate but still feels overly generous somehow ❤
With the moral compass being missing you would think it's the redemption seeking paladin, but it is obviously dob that is the moral compass
43:18 CMOT Corazon?
Am I insane, or are shop door bells located on the INSIDE?
I headcannoned that he smashed through like a glass pane to reach it or something, but quietly
They mentioned coaching videos- where do I find those!?
Search "dicebreaker how to dm" and you should find it
czcams.com/video/yUCaP_GfdA8/video.htmlsi=yUoKmfaDoHrOTrmA
Here's the first one
What happened to the other people inside the shop Luke said there were a few people
The shop closed, so I assume they would have left with everyone else.
I love Johnny's character Hengist. A very adorable dwarf. :D
Edit: Is his character a cleric?
Pretty sure. Possibly a Paladin (they’ve got turn undead too, right?) but I think Johhny mentioned they‘d play a cleric.
Probably a Cleric of the Forge Domain, I believe. It's a great option that doesn't get picked too often.
He is a paladin but it is easy to miss if you haven't seen the dm training episodes on dice breaker
Clerics and Paladins are very similar, Paladins are just more battle oriented.
ah yes, the suzette guild of g'eth, aka the sg-2
You know, Luke could have been really mean with unmaking the baby
Dude I wana find those rules of baby
Here's that debriefing they were advertising: czcams.com/video/hNeLmSsWQEA/video.html
This should not be construed as a recommendation.
any1 more familiar with youtube than me explain why i listened to 8½ minutes of the time fill music before they started on the recording? i feel like that could of been edited off
hi! it’s because you lose the live chat replay from edited versions of livestreams. we figure it’s pretty easy to just skip forward, and means you keep the chat replay so you can see how people reacted when the episode was live.
at 5th level Turn undead becomes Destroy Undead, as Hengist is assuming 7th level as the rest of the party are CR 1 or lower Undead would have been destroyed instead of terrified.
terrified is way more fun for that situation, fun > RAW imo
@@Albatross0913 "fun > RAW" is RAW. 😁
@@Albatross0913 the problem with this, is that in this group, it means RAW doesn't exist. Which i oppose most vehemently.
It only destroys really weak undead (up to CR 1/2). Mummies are much more powerful (CR 3), so they could only be destroyed by a cleric with his level in the Teens. They can be turned at any CR as long as they fail their save.
Think we could trim about 8 minutes off the beginning of this?
My only problem with the episode is the watch doesn't make a whole lot of sense. It takes years already lived, reverting someone to their youth(thats all fine and good) my hang up however and its not a big deal, but then you transfer those years to a new person, why don't they age? You have a device that takes years lived and then gives them to someone else..shouldn't that age the second person? Shouldn't it strip the years yet lived from someone and transfer those?
I know i'm being too knitpicky..but i guess if it got us baby prudence i'm fine with it.
Since it benefits both the "victim" and the wielder, if anything the curator should start a business. Revert people to their prime years and gain some amount of extended life. Its a win win for everyone
Really great to watch this after the setup that Luke and Johnny did, it was a great episode. However I felt they should have stuck with the original idea of the watch turning whoever is greedy enough to snatch it, and Hengist should have stayed out of the safe cracking and given the others a chance at it. It feels more rewarding to watch whoever is the most greedy going into snatch the watch first being the victim. Doing it on a d4 roll was a bit of a wasted opportunity.
I want to syphon all of Corazon's magic just so he can't be an idiotic scammer with it.
But he was right!
Too late, honestly
Man Ellen really loves just going against what the rest of the group is trying to do
more; Ellen trying to help Luke out => Merilwen metagaming
so, preface this by saying first time ive watched this episode and i am going in order [so i dunno how much better he gets] but luke was very railroady and super quick to shut things down. which is fine-ish, he is the one running the game and all. the positive note of it all is he had everyone laughing or giggling their asses off so i dont really think anyone cared too much about it. might be something he works on in the future, i dont know as i am not that far in the story yet, nor have i watched blades in the dark
I know this video is old, but I'm really kinda mad at Merowind. She ruined Corazons plan for no reason.
Watch the after game review with Luke/Johnny. Meta gaming is a problem sometimes.
I hate moonbeam...
Sounds like someone who got moonbeamed
In the actual game, spell casting gets disadvantage at close range in order to balance out the combat amongst melee vs ranged characters. The oxventure is more of a story based off of DnD rather than the actual game itself, so for how you guys build the narrative, it makes sense to give advantage to a spellcaster at close range, because STORY-wise it makes more sense. If that were the case in like… REAL DnD though, it would shift far more of the power on the balance towards spell casters, and in a fight against melee characters, they wouldn’t HAVE to worry about the enemy closing the distance on them.
I'm not sure it's a martial/caster balance thing. There are melee spells, and ranged martial weapons, which both get these same disadvantages. I think it's just there to incentivise players to use the right tool for the occasion.
The rules are rules, sure, because the game needs a framework to build on, but the DM always have the right to veto them, homebrew or judge fudge things when it suits them and the story - that is part of "real" DnD too. Having disadvantage on ranged weapons in close combat makes a lot of sense if we're talking about a bow or similar contraption, but magic - as long as it doesn't demand wide sweeping gestures - shouldn't logically have any disadvantage.
I can’t help but be annoyed by Corazon this session.
It does happen. While Andy is a lovely and sweet man, he has admitted that Corazon was harassing Luke a bit hard on his first DM experience.
At least he wasn't the one going "he's just a big nerd, everyone listen to me!"
@@logansheffield8641 Or Ebert blowing stuff up extra hard. Or dob causing chaos for no reason.
@@logansheffield8641 yeah, she was really grating my nerves at the end there

There was no hand over.. they left in last seeking suette. Luke learn more of dming. you'll get there.
I think he did really well.
*laughs in several things being mentioned as anecdotes in various Oxventures*
After watching n him as Dob, Luke gets no sympathy. Got off easy if anything.
I'm pretty sure he was implying it happened between episodes.
