I still remember when Oxboxtra were all like, "In today's video, we're gonna see what this whole 'Dungeons and Dragons' thing is all about, which is totally gonna be a one-off sort of video that we as a video games channel probably won't do again."
Garnet's "wanna see a card trick?"/"let me deal you in." is just so cool, and Mike's "I'm gonna have to be funny between combats" xD well, he is so *thumbs up*
Johnny: “It’s my first day, but also I’m 3 days away from retirement.”
Well, uh, to be fair, you could, uh, say, that ol' ... Nathaniel Janssen is, uh, about three ... days from his, uh, retire- .. -ment. The trick, uh, is... which side.
well, he did explain that to delacey (sp?) a few episodes back... 'when you are old, you can kind of get away with anything'
"Why would you take a pack of cards away from a prisoner?" In a town where gambling is outlawed, it's absolutely possible they would.
If she had been caught gambling, the cards would have been taken....though there are still other card games that don't involve gambling.
Johnny's expressions are killing me omg. They get to be more sincere as a player than as a DM and it's such a gift to see both sides of them :D
I was thinking the exact same thing earlier on. He looks so into it it's infectious in the best possible way
So, that's War, Pestilence, and now Death they've dealt with. I'm curious how Andy is going to handle Famine as a person. Perhaps they'll be starving out a town somehow. A Seven Samurai situation where they're demanding so much as bandits that the town has nothing left?
id never connected the dots with this comparison but... i fuckin love it!!!!!
that's so smart. I had not connected the bad guys to the four horsemen
I feel like when Johnny reached into the flaming corpse to get the key that everyone has forgotten that in the previous episode Johnny's character had literally pickled himself with alcohol.
Mike does mention it actually, so he remembered but sees "oh, lucky escape for you" lol
Loving that Johnny is just terrified when Andy gives them the gun. GM brain running overdrive on "wtf is coming for us that I am allowed to have this amazing item"
Well, it's not exactly overpowered. Not having to reload is nice but it's not like it does extra damage or anything. This is Deadlands - revolver auto-loaders are a thing. It just saves money on ammo.
That expression just screamed, "That is so cool. What's the catch?"
Now the demon is going to take over at an inopportune time and use it on Jane and Mike
@@zaphodb1158 It also doesn't shoot for non-harrowed, which may or may not come up. The ol' DNA-locked gun scenario.
Thing is, it's not a random thing Andy made up. I checked the Hangin' Judge which Budroux is based on and it says in its passage that if you hang it and thus kill it, one of its guns is left behind for a Harrowed player to use. There might be something big coming up (in fact I expect there to be) but the item being left behind is an official feature, not a tease at bigger monsters.
I say this with much love - Johnny was so delightfully nerding out during this session, with references only they were understanding. As someone not familiar with Deadlands, I was really enjoying Johnny's reactions during this episode! It was having captions say [ominous sounds], only with Johnny's face lol
I am absolutely loving how Johnny and Andy have somehow turned Nate into old West Ant-Man 🐜🐜 😂
PLEASE JKHAFLSHJLHKDH
I love Johnnys commitment to character.
"I'll shoot them again, because that's what Nate would do" even though their tone says they know it won't do shit.
In this episode, Silas proves to be an expert snake swallower while Nate enjoys a quick game of Pikmin.
I love Andy’s DMing (or I guess marshaling). He doesn’t pull any punches and makes it nail biting!
Andy pulls lots of punches. He ignores multiple action penalty quite a bit, for one.
It could be argued that Andy actually pulls _more_ punches than Johnny, from what I've seen in other comments. Personally I'm too unfamiliar with the details of either rule system to speak this with confidence, I'm just going based on what I've read
Andy's Marshaling is fun, but generous. His interpretations of the rules are exceptionally kind to the posse, with numerous penalties ignored or mitigated.
His encounter design is pretty cruel (pox walkers, hanging judges, servitors that can only die in duels - and they cheat in duels), but his rulings in-the-moment are quite generous.
I feel he runs it in a way where it's a more fun format to watch. I don't think it would be as fun to watch everyone die immediately.
I think Andy does a great job at keeping it entertaining
Let's all hope Silas doesn't have his cage rattled
I think it's been rattled already)
... by horses
Oh thought he mighta been like the hulk, his cage is always rattled!
It came pre rattled
That's my secret, my cage is always rattled
I know that players having inside knowledge of TTRPGs can be immersion-breaking, but it's always a delight to see Johnny react to game mechanics they know super well
I haven't seen anyone mention it so I will, it is just so nice that at the start of this adventure, Silas felt all hypocritical about being a lawman. and yet they were only able to succeed as well as they did because he is an actual lawman wielding "blades of justice". just imagine how validating that would be to have the universe itself through magic confirm your position you felt hypocritical about
I got actual chills when Andy described the hanging
I know nothing about this system, so watching Johnny's reactions before we all get an explanation of what's happening is just magical:)
And again- Andy's an awesome GM and his voices are hilarious:D
(I'm being serious here. Even ignoring all the other excellent voices- using Chauncey as a baseline and extending it to a whole range of distinct characters is really difficult to pull off! Well done!)
I noticed the Chauncey baseline as well and enjoy it every time
Totally agree on the voices -- Mike's deep-throated grumble, Johnny's ancient wanderer, Ellen's southern Belle, Luke's classic-by-now ragamuffin, and Jane's transplanted but oddly not out of place Brit (or whatever the Deadlands equivalent is) -- all of them are amazing.
Everyone looked to have a great time with this episode and everyone using their skills and abilities like Garnet making use of Nate's insect control (which Nate seems to have forgotten about) was ingenious. Andy has set up an excellent environment where everyone has really bought their A game to the table- this has become my favorite Ox RPG series so far- it's that good.
Not going to lie, Johnny is still one of my favorite DM's of all time but Andy is absolutely crushing it. Great episode as always 👏
I'm loving Andy's "who's to say?" DM vibes, reminds me of his Ellen's Fear Academy reactions 💯
This whole series has been utter amazing, from the excellent GM'ing / Marshalling by Andy to the performances of the characters / players by Jane, Johnny, Mike, Ellen and Luke, such entertainment, enjoyment, suspense and action throughout, you should all be applauded for such great stuff.
Johnny’s tattoos to the rescue lol
I don't know what the tattoos do or how they help, but the first thing I wanted to comment on this video was that I like to imagine that Nate had all the tasks Johnny has
@@trmahama6447 Johnny has a tattoo of a skeleton snake on their arm, so they could point to it when the others got confused about whether snakes have ribs.
Johnnys awesome
@@ArDeeMee *they
@@Bjoern_1897 Force of habit. My language doesn’t have an equivalent, so I‘m kinda forced to go by visuals. =D
That moment when Johnny and Mike are reminded about cover was just *chef's kiss*
When Jane put the Unholy Icon away, all I could think of was Alanis Morissette singing, "Well I've got one hand in my pocket..."
I am legitimately ashamed of myself that I missed that reference
There were a lot of comments about that on the livestream. 😂
@brianschoner3350 🤣🤣 a Benny for you sir! 🪙
Personally I was wondering if it was a right hand and did it kill a Spaniards father?
@@lindenhollaway7317 That was my first thought too. 😂
I love when Johnny almost starts crying when Mike talks about using the snake bones as a lock pick. These players have been brought up right.
"Or that you were skilled at survival... seeing as you're dead."
Andyyyyyyyyyy!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Johnny's excitement and continued amazement for the last couple of minutes of the video at getting one of the Judge's guns is utterly adorable. I've never played Deadlands and have no idea what the gun is but just seeing their excitement at getting one had me grinning and excited for them too. 😄
Looked it up.
The revolver does 2d6+1 like a regular revolver, never needs reloading and thanks to the scythes, can be used in melee to deal d6+ the users strength. Additionally if they're used for a melee attack and the user gets a raise, they can use the raise to fire the gun instead of just doing extra melee damage.
Oh man, that wasn't what I was expecting to happen. Andy is just soo good at coming up with these scenarios and such a great GM. This was just a really fun and exciting episode... and slightly creepy. XD Plus, seeing Johnny's reaction to things is a whole other level of entertainment. When they start to get scared, I'd get scared. When they got excited, I got excited. It was great fun.
Y'all are amazing. I can't wait to see what Andy has planned for the next bounty.
Well, they've taken out all four bounties and yet the series is not yet over. So they have to doubt that the last one will just be giving their employer the rings and leaving.
@@Pseudowolf no there is one more bounty left. they've only killed 3 bounties so far
@@karichhoy I thought there were five bounties?
@vanguardbreaker8826 I just double-checked, and there are 4 bounties. They're called the Red Hand Gang, which makes me think 5, but it's 4.
Andy being like idk is so in character lol
Good lord I was riding right along with Johnny on the Fear and Serotonin Express the whole time. Andy is making for an incredible DM and I love seeing Johnny's reaction to it.❤ ❤❤
'What a dreadful fate, you've become more like Johnny....'
I had assumed the first of the gang was the Death servitor but the judge definitely takes that role. They did mention a military rank for the first member so I guess he was actually the War servitor.
Man this series is bloody brilliant! I adore their Oxventure DnD and the Blades in the Dark was also excellent, but Deadlands managed to bring me more tension than actually watching a duel in a western. The whole team is absolutely incredible and it's a joy to watch Andy in the role of Marshal.
Johnny's expression on getting that weapon was like a kid on Christmas. XD
I count at least two Alanís Morisette allusions in this episode because Jane’s got “one hand in [her] pocket” and the whole rain on Nate’s Wedding day.
Also, I love watching Johnny’s face as Andy GM’s this world. I don’t know what is going on with that 6 fingered hand but they looked like there is something very *extra* about it
SPOILERS AHEAD [mention of what the boss is]
.
.
.
Can we take a minute to appreciate the sublte way of Andy hinting them how to kill the judge? And Johnny managing to tell them *in character* without making Nate magically know what a Hangin' Judge even is?
Peak DM and roleplay.
Absolutely wonderful. Wasn’t sure if I would enjoy the setting as much as I’ve liked the DnD, but this has some of the best mechanics, and Andy does a wonderful job of telling a story.
Andy's doing a great job. Seems like he's a natural. Johnny's reaction to the hand is similar to mine, although my though was: "Vecna?!" Never trust weird, severed hands, kids.
I love how genuinely excited Johnny looked when he got the gun at the end, he was like a little kid on Christmas!
GOSH DARN IT! It was staring me in the eye what sort the judge is like. All that hangin' of folks. But I only knew the same time Johnny knew. DARN IT!
Johnny's expressions!! Combined with the music and everything else made this episode so emotional! What a fun episode, as always.
"owl hoot" is now in my vocabulary
Another exceptional episode. Deadlands is absolutely brilliant - top work by Andy to be such an awesome marshal and his npcs are amazing! Am also loving Luke’s music!
Mike's reaction to Johnny's potential corpse situation made me LOL. 51:58
Johnny's expression over getting that gun was priceless XD
The kind of skeleton that Jane imagined snakes to have is actually exactly the kind that eels have!
I'm running this for my group on a couple of weeks. This series has helped me grasp the system quite a bit better, thanks! :) Demon voice cracked me up.
I can't put my finger on it, but that one thing could come in very handy.
...Nailed it.
Nate casually acquiring an ant army and an infinite revolver in a single episode
wouldn't it be hilarious if the moment jerry is put in charge the power goes to his head and he becomes just as bad as the old judge
Johnny's happy 😄 happy face over his new wepon makes me happy 😊
I just noticed Andy's "What vampire bites?" style handkerchief. 😂
A bit scary there! The screaming of all the victims. Yikes! Good stuff!
Jane's first attack gave me an idea for a build.
A huckster from New Orleans who also carries a Bo Staff with a background in being raised by the theves guild. And you have my favourite x man!
Excellent character vs. player knowledge action from Johnny.
Last time they walked up, with guns, to someone sat behind a desk, i said
"If you're going to shoot, shoot, don't talk"
So, guess I retract that?
That's more of a bathroom thing...
"Well have I told about my wedding day? It rained!"
"Isn't it ironic?"
"I'd like to think!"
I laughed so hard! Hahaha! Epic content. Thank you.
Just want to say how unpleasant Andy's descriptions are. That monster was utterly horrible to the imagination. Great work, Marshall Andy! Loving the series
I’ve used the same kind of villain in my Hell on Earth campaign, sort of, to throw my players a curve ball. Such a cool fight.
I got a kick out of the dead man being dealt an ace and an eight for his first initiative draw.
So this far 2 out of the three baddies dealt with have obviously been some sort of undead. What do you guys think are the chances that one very pissed off Benjamin Bellows will make a comeback seeking revenge after not being shot in the head?
A phenomenal episode, well done Andy!
been very kind with the benny's as well.
Spoiler!
Looking back now, I'm kinda mad at myself I didn't realize he was going to be a hangin' judge considering I just read about them before this episode came out....
This series is brilliant! The next episode can't come soon enough.
The way the bounty targets have been escalating - a (cheating?) gunman, a weird brain-y lady and now this, I do wonder what the next one is going to be. And whether or not Victoria knew these secrets before sending the gang after them!
Bugs for the bug god, ants for the ant throne!
Another awesomely splendid episode.
Johhny's face at 1:09:36. At the same time, I was thinking that I couldn't wait for Jane to forget that she has this item. 😂
Johnny being so happy about that gun is the best part
I love Jane's defiance and petulance against the Marshall's strict rules, probably because the stakes are so high compared to D&D
Johnny's face at 1:48:15 makes up for all the time they spent with head in hands this episode :D
This was a real rollercoaster of emotions for them…
@@ArDeeMeeI wouldn't say rollercoaster... more like... spiralling staircase to hell.
So… I’m sure gathering the rings of the four horsemen of the apocalypse will end fine.
Kind of waiting for Silas to face down a Horserer and be proven right, only to gain a legit phobia now.
Johnny' s reactions throughout was the best
I love the. look on everyone's face as the Glom is described lol
Andy never ceases to both make me wet myself laughing and squirm in disgust with his characters and descriptions.
Is M.T. Bordeaux supposed to be a pun for "Empty Body" or something like that?
My thoughts exactly!
Johhny moving their hat and eyebrows simultaneously made me lol. love Oxventuŕe Deadlands!
I was wondering when they were going to set something on fire again. It's pretty much their trademark.
In my head, Nate is controlled by a Manatee.
I'm watching this for the second time and i can't believe I missed Johnny's ironic reference 😂 it rained on his wedding day 😂
I'm really enjoying these I wonder how long they are gonna run for , would defo want a second season or something ♡
I keep expecting the opening to say "and where nightmares are born", and whenever that doesn't happen it surprises me.
I chuckled at the Arrested Development joke
Another fantastic session!
31:43 a bald man with a barcode tattoo on the back of his head pokes his head around the corner "You too?"
That was fantastic! Thanks all!
Such a great, more combat heavy episode! great seeing the characters having to improvise and think their way out of bizarre situations
1:48:29 I picked a good time to pause, Johnny's face is giving boundless joy
I’ve never seen Johnny so frightened, not even when B. Dave was doing his utmost to terrify them in Fury of The Black Rose, or when things got truly scary in The Excavation of Hob’s Barrow!
Mind you, having just read through the description of this particular type of monster, the fear was very justified.
Warning: Potential spoiler(s) ahead
If there was an MVP for each episode, I'd wholeheartedly nominate Johnny (Nate) for it. Their reactions and chats throughout this episode had me more intrigued and cracking up as I watched. For example, Nate's chat with one of the guards at 44:00 - I believe that chat sequence to be the friendliest and most pleasant chat since Dob's unexpected morale-boosting speech with the merciless jail keeper. Thoroughly enjoyed it all! 👏 👏 👏
Cannot wait to see the next episodes and find out more about Lady Victoria. I've read several theories about her in the comments over the past few episodes. And yet, the entire team has definitely kept the intrigue going in this series, so much so that I don't know what to think when the moment eventually comes. Well done, all of you! Thank you all so much. Still subscribed.
3 down, only one more to go. And with each episode Im more and more curious with what the hell this gang was invovled with.
This series is the best
Amazing lol I loved Johnny's reaction to the gun haha. Amazing
This original gang would have been terrifying in their day, majority of them are literal monsters
So far im at 52:29 and id just like to say nate is a zombie containing an evil spirit so what happens if the corpse pile absorbs nate
I think it couldn't, since Nate is not a corpse. Harrowed are complicated... is not simply a zombie with an evil spirit. The evil spirit is symbiotic to Nate. When the 'Glom died, the manitou controlling it just banished back home. If Nate "dies" -as undead can die-, the manitou is destroyed with him.
Short answer: it can't absorb Nate because the manitou who reanimated Nate is way more powerful than the one in the 'Glom.
So, any predictions on how they will kill their target?
My top picks are:
- hanging (ironic)
- devoured by bugs
- shot
- incinerated
Let's see if I was right in about 20 something hours)
That's like their entire arsenal aside from getting trampled by horses or something
So far getting shot has had a 100% success rate on the previous targets, I'll take that for 300 please.
I quite fancy devoured by bugs.
Nate died for those powers. Might as well use ‘em!
Dynamite. 🧨💥😂
Drowning in Beans. Maybe? Yes?
@@WizzyMcWizzytonwaste of good beans, if you ask me)
I know this is petty but fun fact. They hung people with rope instead of barbed wire because rope has a lot of give and the tension is spread evenly. A barbed wire noose will put all the pressure on one point and snap.
I know I'm being pedantic sry guys lol. Very fun episode. I love hearing yall do Amereican accents. Jane's is the best. 😂 keep up the good work fam!
Garnet’s gonna Prudence 👍
Also wondering if Johnny would have counted coup on the ‘Glom would he be terrified of himself every time he absorbed a corpse due to his newfound phobia? Lol.
The only thing missing from the Oxventure shirt is Sweet William.
Johnny is obviously very familiar with the Deadlands setting as a player or a Marshall based on their reactions to things in the game, such as when what Jane's new item is or their knowledge of the Fear rating in a previous episode but this isn't a bad thing at all.
It's also how when that thing happened in the previous episode I sort of knew what was was happening to their character...
But beans isn't it fun. Also, since when has beans been a curse word... you'd think someone who hates them with a passion would know this but I'm confused 🤣
