  • We go on a merry chase through a number of possibilities...it all comes down to a friggin' porous gasket material!

I love your carb diagnostic videos. Always entertaining and extremely informative.

Those Darn leaks will drive you nuts! Even New carbs leak I have found. So much for quality control!

I have had exactly the same issue with an after market gasket, Tillotson genuine gasket was a bit larger and covered the lip correcly.

gotta be a pretty good detective to find that stuff. Ya know some things should be able to be taken for granted...a carb kit ought to perform....but more and more across the internet are stories of crappy parts and supplies for automotive use. I believe you mentioned that brand Tillotson kits were regarded more reliable but is that for sure? Most brands have their parts made in China now and though I think the China manufacturers are capable of high quality work they are apparently not held to strict inspection standards so the products vary in quality all over the board. Could be a mechanic would benefit from soaking the gaskets in seal stop leak conditioner and/or heating the assemble carburetor with a hair dryer to soften material and allow more compression? Ridiculous we even have to think about going these remediation routes.

There used to be batches of "New" carburetors sold on Ebay for cheap. Appeared to be genuine Walbro units. I bought a few and found machining errors, or something wrong on each. Wonder if someone was selling factory seconds/defect bin units they had walked out of the factory.

I would have put on two gaskets.that used to fix a lot of problems for me

How about porosity in the casting?

That's a very good point. These have 4 screws on each side and I am sure I saw another video that said one side the screws are slightly longer than the other side. Could have been the screws are on the wrong side.

@@Tod_Unctious The screws are not interchangeable 6-32 on the pump side, 4-40 on the metering side. However the rebuild kits from china (including the ones from tillotson) are made from much thinner material and the 6-32 x 3/8 screws can bottom out. Currently soaking my gaskets overnight in gas oil mix.
