Kaity is a chatterbox, but I love that she's interested in the old tractor. Anything that gets kids off of devices and out doing something practical is fine by me!

Homelite-Terry 663 Chainsaw...Turned Out To Be A Father's Day Gift!!!

The few references I can find to a 6-63 appear to the Port Chester NY built; this 663 and other references I can find appear to be Terry built in Montreal. I have no clue if they're the same platform, as I realized I do not have a 6-63 IPL, rather just a 663 IPL that I had mislabeled for a while!

It's a tough decision to make, but it's one that was unavoidable. Perhaps someday I'll have bandwidth to do repairs again, but we're talking a decade out at the soonest. I'll still be uploading content, but it'll be more focused on my saws, collection and projects!

I realize your video is just shy of a year old but I cannot tell you how much I appreciate it, I'm a mid 50's do it herself old farm girl and this the season for storm drop clean up. A few years ago I picked up a nice little homeltite textron xl auto oiler, in a craftsman hard case for $25, I believe from the original owner, it has a 16" oregon bar and far from under powered. this little thing runs amazing and is light enough for me to use even with my back and arthritis issues. But holy crap it's an oiler, the bottom of the storage case is very well oiled.
1:48 i need a bar like the saw on the far right. the one on my poulan 245 has a dip in it from how much we use it
THANK YIU FOR YOUR HELP
Wow, what an excellent video, I learned a bunch! Thank you. It's so cool to find a video this good!

Couple of years ago a guy brought me 2 saws, neither of which ran. I always do a compression test 1st, spark 2nd. 1 saw showed it had good compression but obviously didn't, wth! The other saw had the same compression reading, wth! Bad compression gauge! Thing is he walked away thinking I was yanking him around & no matter what was said would change his mind. I did buy another compression gauge but life happened & I quit working on 'em.
Your camera is too far away. Please have the camera closer to what you’re doing. Cheers
I've worked on these decades ago & 1 thing I always wondered about was cutting down a Snapper rear-engined mower's clutch/brake band to put inside the recoil cup. Think about it!
I have 4 of them.
Long time ago I saw a video on chainsaw safety. It told of what happened to a mechanic that started saws on the bench. The bench had triangular piece on the sides so stuff would stay on it. The saw was running while he adjusted the carb. Yes, the bar was on & turning. As the saw moved on the bench under vibration the chain caught those end pieces & the saw went into his face! It didn't show his face before or afterward but he lived thru it. Everytime I see you start a saw on your bench I think of that. All it takes is 1 time!
I use to think the same thing as you stated about the cutters being the same length, I have a video showing a chain with 2 cutters missing and I ground the rest of the cutters on that side so they are half as long as the other side and because the drags are set correctly the chain still cuts like new and straight. czcams.com/video/rKN3p_QwhCQ/video.html
Send me the old style filter!!!
Nice to hear 80:1 on the Amsoil Saber. I think I’m headed in that direction and giving up the Stihl synthetic 50:1 ratio.
Thanks! I was able to identify my father-in-law's Homelite as model 10537, built as the 58th on line 2 on the 165th day of 1980. By the way, you have a great speaking voice, could be on radio with a voice like that!
My oil just pours out thru the bar pad & runs empty in no time flat! Does have a duck bill in place, & a adjstable oil control valve! What is happening with this?
Got an old super 2 that is pumping bar oil into the combustion chamber. Haven't opened it yet so what's your first guess? By the way, it runs great but as you might have guessed, smokes a lot. Thanks in advance.
You have a very nice voice, I could listen to you talk about carbs all day. Thank you
Glad you like it! That saw came from a old timer down in Georgia i bought most of his saws and that was the last one from it that i kept. Hated to see it go but times are tough and I'm stoked and honored to see it go to your collection!
Would generally never rev a chainsaw with no bar and chain. Its a recipe for engine overspeed and on some saws (as the guy below says) disintegration of the clutch as I too saw this happen on a chinese chainsaw.
I have a showroom condition Double eagle 80. It is bad to the bone. I don't run it though.
I've done this kind of work for nigh 60 years. 1 thing I've noticed are compression testers need to be tested from time to time. I ran across 2 saws where 1 was low on compression but the tester said it was ggod & the other was really good with great compression. Thing was the same guy owned both of 'em & was there when I noticed this. Made me feel very foolish! Bought another gauge but never have used it.
On some of the older Sachs-Dolmars they are timed at 8000 with a timing light. We're talking of saws in the '80s.
Now that is a neat Homelite variation indeed!
I still have my XL 12 that I bought in 1988, has not run since 2017,,,also have the old green Brushmaster that Dad bought used in 1972.
I have one
The list is great, but I noticed that there are a few different saw models that carry the same UT or Type number
New in box 65.00 10 min swap
Excellent tutorial. Thanks Leon for another great video for us amateurs. Comment section also laid out some great points. Thanks everyone.
I just picked one of these up for free at a garage sale cuz the pull cord was snapped hah.. 1981 and runs mint! Def need a duckbill valve, thanks for the tip!
Great tutorial on them check valve.
Hi Leon. I have a homelite xl textron chainsaw. The carburator is not fixable. I want to replace it any compatible afterpart carb but i dont know which. You know what can i buy it from aliexpress?
Another great video for us new guys.
Great tutorial. Thanks for sharing
Heavy?
Im running 32:1 in my leaf blowers, maxima super m
A very cool saw, don’t see many of those too often thanks for sharing Leon, keep doing what your doing!
Great tip/information. Thanks
That's a nice saw!! I just bought a mini mac for climbing, now to identify what series it is.Also just bought the last xl12 rod needle bearings available from u!!! Thanks
Sweet saw...🤩
$425 + 88 shipping is a good price for one of these. I paid a little more for the other one. I too look under the hood and clean them out before giving them a test run. Does yours have the brown/yellow coil or the later white coil? Mine came with the later white coil with no spark and was wondering if they came with that white coil or the brown/yellow coil. I swapped it with a same time period pro mac 700 that came with the brown/yellow coil to test it. the brown/yellow coil has two ground leads; one is routed to the mounting stud; the white coil has only one ground that leads to the on/off switch. take care
Now that is a firewood saw!
Sounds great Leon! These are getting hard to find. I found a near mint one years ago, just needed a piston.
What a beautiful saw. Congratulations Leon,
Do you have a sp 125 mac in your collection.
They are a sweet saw; they are getting easier to find but priced insanely high.
That's a real real nice runner!! We have too make a deal!!! Have a good time whit her on the hill. Greetings kristof
That clutch cover looks like it is made to break just like it has.

👍
Nice 1 for the collection. Just like Jello, always room for more.
We ran Pioneer at our logging company for a good couple decades. They cut great and was tough. We ran them until the P42-P62. When they started with the Farm Saw we went to Husqvarna. I really have no idea how many Pioneers we bought or how much wood we cut with them. It was a pile of both for sure. Those P60's were beasts. Probably one of the best saws at the landing. Slam the dogs in and let it eat wood. Miss those old saws. The P51 is probably one of the finest saws ever made.
