I have one goal: to build your confidence as a DJ so when you play you can do a world class set on any gear. This video makes club set ups less daunting so you can make the jump from controller to club gear with effortless ease.
I have just launched a new course - get club ready on a controller and then make the jump from controller to club: www.clubreadyd...

The joy of having a controller also, for the price of 1 cdj, you have a 4 deck set-up complete ready to go!
Both yourself and Rob Swift have the most refreshing, no-bullshit approach to dj tutorials I've seen. Ace.
Thanks Damien :)
ANOTHER video with 0 dislikes...absolutely outstanding content on this channel
@Kamdyn Ryker gtfo of here
@Omar Harry you too
I swear by my DDJ-1000
That’s great advice on not relying too much on visuals. Interesting tidbit: I DJ’ed for a small group of friends over the weekend using a DDJ-1000 and one the songs loaded up wrong in Rekordbox. The beatgrids were totally off and trying to beat match visually just wouldn’t have worked. But I was really glad that I was able to beat match by ear. I just completely ignored the visuals and knowing how to do it without the visuals saved me in that moment.
Were u using a mac??? Common with the The big sur update
Love your vids I’ve started watching since the beginning of this pandemic and I’ve learned an unmeasurable amount from you, I can’t thank you enough
My DDj-1000SRT arrived last week, and it's so much fun being able to beatmatch now without any visuals. And another epic video man, I truly enjoyed this one, it's like taking the training wheels off when you take the beat grids away :) To anyone wondering about buying the course, like Shia La Boeuf says, JUST DO IT! lol Seriously, you won't regret it, and this guy is a legendary teacher!
Thanks so much Mathew I appreciate this :)
I hide the wave forms and it’s a really good idea. After an hour I’m fast enough with beatmatching, I also give myself more time for it so I plan transitions in different time of the song and also it workouts really good. I have also more time to play with eq so my transitions are even smoother. It also benefits because I don’t look at my laptop so often, I have ddj 800 so I see these mini waveforms, but it’s enough. That’s brilliant.
Another advantage to being able to play on anything (or even broken gear) is you can show up to shows and parties with headphones and records/CD's/USB and be ready to go. Got quite a few sets by a promoter or other dj running up to me and asking if I had headphones and music because somebody canceled last minute.
Gotta say though going from more traditional club (vinyl/cd) gear to MIDI/ standalone took a while to get used to. Scratch/turntablism is still a challenge.
Can't wait to see the ddj400 great video as always 👍
Another quality vid with the usual great advice Andrew, looking forward to the DDJ 400 set next week......
Awesome video as usual mate. I'm still waiting for that vinyl mix lol.
I use a controller and use the memory cues as visual labels (like mixout points or vocals or whatever) on the tracks. That's why I like Rekordbox, these memory cue don't clutter up the performance pad's hotcue view.
Same!
Andrew if you make a video on what to wear to a gig. Perhaps you can discuss any differences between a DJ that moves and dances a lot when he is on the decks vs one that is more sedentary. Either one in my eyes is fine - it may vary how they interact with the crowd. I myself am not one of those types of DJ's that jump around and step to the beats - I'm more of just a head bobber. But I don't think that makes me play any different from one who might seem more 'interactive' with the controls. Just a thought.
Another awesome video, thanks man! Always nice to get out your vids even as a refresher
100% everything Andrew said. My first gig the equipment was pretty old. The cue button didn't work properly, the filter wasn't working. It felt weird because the buttons were in a different place. I had relied too much on visual clues & very often Rekordbox analyses the songs incorrectly. But you roll with it. Learn solid beatmatching right at the start & it will make your life 100% easier.
Thanks mate for all your time, attention and love that you send to us here on CZcams.
Thank you so much for your videos! I used them to learn to dj a year ago and have since played live a ton of times and teach a few of my friends to dj as well. Much love!
I also still feel as if I’m learning just as much from your stuff today as I was when I was new! 🙏🏻
This man is worth his weight in gold...Learnt so much, and I have ddj 1000s...what are the odds
Looking forward to seeing the next few videos progressing from a DDJ400 to the 1000. I’m looking to do the same myself!
Working on them now! In truth today (just now actually) was my first tine using a DDJ400 and it's better than I thought - a tonne of fun!
Brilliant video. Thanks
Hi Andrew I absolutely love your Monday video’s. man music and mixing excite me so much i don’t no if it’s normal to fill like this Anyway have a great day 🔊🔊🔊🔊🔊
For those using Traktor, you can do the same as in 3:36 by using the "search" view (click the magnifying glass icon). That will expand the library view and you will only see a tiny tiny visualization of the track decks with only the BPM, time and a small waveform.
Legend, thanks mate :)
Another great video, Andrew! Boy, you just made me jump behind the decks and try out beatmatching by ear myself! Thanks for the tip about pressing spacebar in rekordbox to hide the detailed waveform. I tried hiding them with a paper before, but sneaky me would always try to get a glimps of the satisfying alignment of the grid 😇
Yet another great video Andrew, loving this new DJ controller series, keep up the great work👌🏼
Thanks Mark :)
Another great video! I've long since moved on from controllers to a Denon setup, but this was still really informative. Keep up the great work
i love this episode, feels comforting watching you use 'normal' gear! :D
Awesome video Andrew thanks mate really looking forward to the next one (not least because I have a DDJ400!)
"Anti-Chipmunk button" Haha love it! Another top vid Andrew, thank you for putting out such consistently great content.
as D J s we have been keeping up with changes
Great video again thanks man
Thank you! My monday learning session.
Nice. Intresting and usefull as always Andrew. Would it be possible for you to explain us, why is that Pioneer developed two different softwares and so incompatible with each other? Of course I´m talking about Serato and RecordBox. Using Serato means to re-do all work on tracks to migrate to Recordbox, ain´t? Thanks in advance. Regards
Thanks for the video Andy. Always great tutorials :)
Great Video Mr DJ
I play psybient/Psychill and I don’t need sync to execute a perfect mix
Awesome video andrew! I have noticed that there are still clubs and venues that have both cdj/usb and vinyl decks in them. Gives me hope for the future to continue with vinyl at clubs.
How do you feel about the vinyl movement coming back and venues still supporting both as choices for the DJs?
Do you think that more places should be open to this notion?
Love your content and thank you for all your work! 🙏👍🍻
🐉☁️
Great job mate 🔥
Hi Andrew!! Again and again thank you for your continuous tips, I love that! I only have one request, I am buying a DDJ400, since I am learning how to DJ (thanks to you), would you care if you made a video reviewing the DDJ400, and maybe mixing a techno set on it?
I'll do my best - add it to the list haha ;)
Love your vids thanks
hey Andrew, great video as always man! really loving this series.
I would find it really interesting if you could do a video on how you can make a transition from DJing to actually producing tracks. do you have any experience you could share with us?
keep up the great work
Thanks for the idea! I'll do my best :)
I'm a rekordbox/ddj800 user, and i find pretty easy to use Traktor, but I fucking hate serato, so being able to adapt my sets to that program has been one of my challenges this last clandestine season.
Ironically, the worst scenario that has repeated a lot to me this latest months has been controllers with jogs-not-working so you are forced to use sync lmao. (Im still dreaming to finally prove myself into cdjs 😭)
Andrew i saw some grey hairs on your head too :) LOL
Can you share what you use to suspend your overhead camera? Also, I've really gotten into your use of EQ mixing. I've been mixing for years and even though EQ mixing isn't as necessary when performing Pop, Hip Hop and R&B, it does seem to make House music & Electronica sound more smooth when mixing. Thanx!!!
It's a little hard t explain - kind of a hybrid between a lighting stand and a monopod and some gaff lol!
How to mix raw deep hytnotic techno ? 🙏🏽
Great suggestion!
Andrew is always laughing. :)
My biggest issue playing on cdjs after controller at home is previewing a track (impossible without loading it) and looking for a next track, on this little screen without all my filters and tags displayed on large screen
Yes it can 100% take getting used to :)
As a beginner using a DDJ-400/1000, I've become "dependent" on using Beat Jump on 32 beats to quickly navigate my way around tracks. Is Beat Jump available on (older) club gear somewhere?
Unfortunately not - no beat jump on older club gear :(
With the Hot Cues, If I set 4 cue points on a controller, say 2 on the first row and 2 on the bottom row, on a CDJ like nexus 2000 will it only show the first 2 cue points since it only has 4 or will it show all 4 hot cues?
the CDJ actually have 8 cue's but they're divided on 2 "banks" so it would show your first cue points on bank 1 and the other 2 on bank 2.
@@arend3669 brilliant thank you mate. I might try get into the habit of just using the 1 bank so that they are all available on the same one
I"m 15 and want to DJ in clubs, how do i go from bedroom to a club??(and like any 15 year old, i don't have any contacts)
You should check out my course - the complete package - this has a whole section on the industry :) www.clubreadydjschool.com/club-ready-dj-course/
What would be your definition of “older gear?” Could you possibly give some examples? I’m trying to figure out if your specifically talking about older Pioneer CDJs or other products from pioneer/other companies.
Older gear I am referring to is basically gear with limited visuals / doesn't sync that you could still find in some clubs: CDJ 2000's, CDJ 900NXS, CDJ 800, CDJ 900's - in my experience it's Pioneer that you will most likely find in clubs, but then again I know lots of venues that have the newer nexus models too - which are awesome to play on :)
Would you do a video on scratching?
I hate when DJ's go over board with the effects especially with the filter knobs. Like every 3 seconds of the song. Like come on enough already.
0:15 so tired of these old heads, and the old head mentality. Embrace tomorrow already, It's here.
