Okay so when it comes to the 2nd and 11th Legions.. We have SOME information.
Both of them participated in a giant ass war called the Rangdan Xenocides. People theorize that one of them died during it.
If I remember right, Horus confronted Malcador (The Emperors bestie) about the missing Primarchs and why the Emperor was trying to get rid of all records of them, Malcador responded by mind-blasting Horus until he stopped talking. This links to the above theory about one dying during the Xenocides, in which one of the Primarchs was swayed to the enemies side before being cut down. Don't want records of your demigod son turning traitor.
Some of their space marines survived also, being separated and placed into other Legions.

I think a good way to look at Ultramarines is they seem to be the "commoner turned noble knight during time of war" archetype in a culture that also supports it. A lot of them volunteered for genetic ascension to avenge family they lost to chaos, to dedicate themselves to the Empire that provides for them, at the behest of their families who wanted the honor of their child ascending to heaven and becoming a guardian angel that protects and serves them. In that context, the indoctrination of a spacemarine is a LOT more convincing. Very similar to how we view the Roman Legions. The legions from rome who came from farmers, tradesman, servants, priests and merchants alike could all be elevated and made noble fighting for the Empire. Military as a form of status/dedication to an empire is very boys in blue.

The Ultramarines are interesting due to how nothing really stands out about them except for when the story needs to do an aaapull and let them win. The fact they aren't unique is why they stand out so much. They are the ideal that the imperium was supposed to aspire to be and instead the imperium decayed. They are a look into the imperium of the past. So it's basically them attempting to come to gripes with how much everyone has changed for the worse. They are definitely the most organized faction and probably the only real reason the imperium has any chance of recovering.

It's like comparing the history of a continent to the history of small island, sometimes a city, or even city block.
You'll find hundreds important named characters on imperium side, but you'll be able to count with your hands important named characters from a xenos faction most of the times. Heck, the imperium will still outbumber the xenos even if you put together every single important named characters from the entire xenos factions.

Dark Angels were even oversimplified by Bricky here.
They do have the Ravenwing and Deathwing in 40k, but those are just remnants of the full legion in 30k. Back in the day, they were organized in a formation called the Hexagrammaton, which was split into six 'wings' that specialized in different means of warfare.
Ravenwing - Jetbikes, skimmers, jetpack infantry, fliers. Fast moving, hard hitting, light forces.
Deathwing - Terminators and heavy infantry. LOTS OF TERMINATORS.
Ironwing - (Defunct in 40k) Tanks, field artillery, and dreadnoughts. Basically a mechanized/armored division.
Stormwing - (Defunct in 40k) Mostly just infantry and the rank-and-file of the legion. Basically became the regular Dark Angels in 40k, and influenced the development of most other Astartes formations.
Firewing - (Defunct in 40k) Not actually specialized in fire, surprisingly. Instead comprised of lots of individual specialists, be they duelists, assassins, saboteours, champions, or bodyguards. Literally just a pick & mix of elite special characters.
Dreadwing - (Defunct in 40k, but suspected to have become the Star Phantoms successor chapter) The most badass by far, and specialized in the use of forbidden and proscribed weapons of mass destruction. We're talking chemical, radioactive, and warp weapons. These MFs left whole planets not just uninhabitable, but utterly inimical to human life.
Gonna drop a quote here, "the Dreadwing was composed of those Astartes whose role was the utter annihilation of the enemy, the salting of the earth and the breaking of worlds. When called out from the ranks, the initiates of the Dreadwing were experts in the brutal tactics of massacre, purge, and the deployment of Exterminatus-class weaponry, though many also specialised in the use of terror as a weapon."

    • @ShadowGhost0117
      @ShadowGhost0117 Před 8 hodinami +1

I would clarify that the Deathwing back then wasn’t purely terminators. They did use them a lot, but they were generally used for more specific targets.
For example, the Stormwing would handle large scale battles. The Deathwing are the ones taking out key targets in said battle.

  • @Baked-Potayto
    @Baked-Potayto Před 3 dny +1

2nd and 11th legion were "erased from all records" lore wise but gameplay wise it was so players could create their own homebrew legions/chapters of space marines.
    As for Alpha Legion.....
Alpharius and Omegon, pre-heresy, were shown a vision of the future. In it, there were only 2 possible outcomes.
1: Imperium beats chaos but the entire galaxy is destroyed
2: Imperium loses but chaos is destroyed
Alpharius (who's actually Omegon) wanted to go full on traitor because he thought what the Emperor wanted was the destruction of Chaos (Big E wants to ensure the safety of humanity, if he could do that without destroying chaos he absolutely would) while Omegon (who's actually Alpharius) wanted to stay loyal to the Emperor. Alpharius ends up making the legion go traitor and later dies while Omegon (remember, he's actually Alpharius) ends up taking on the mantle of Alpharius (he pretends to get killed and reassumes control of the legion). Alpha Legion is now a traitor legion, and that's basically that for canon.
What's widely accepted is that because the Alpha Legion is all about subterfuge, chances are they're not actually traitors, they're just pretending to be traitors to weaken chaos from the inside. This is very heavily supported by actual canon events, like a space marine chapter almost being wiped out and the Alpha Legion being out of place in the blockade allows them to escape which is something they wouldn't fuck up, it was completely intentional. There have also been reports of Alpha Legion marines supporting Imperium forces in battle and just straight up fighting other chaos legion forces. Because there's 2 primarchs in the legion, chances are there's 2 factions in the legions. One that stayed loyal and acts as sleepers while the other legitimately turned traitor because they think that's the best way to ensure chaos is destroyed.
Either way, they're the best legion hands down. They're so batshit crazy that even Tzeentch doesn't know what the fuck they're doing and he knows everything.

The real irl reason the 2nd and 11th legions aren't mentioned is so players can just well, invent a legion and play it claiming well it's the long lost 2nd or 11th that are active in Warhammer 30K say right before the Hersey, during it or returned in 40K. It's to give freedom to players to experiment really which is extremely cool when you think about it and you can also invent the Primarch too as their existence has been purged by the Inquisition

Long story short: around the year 30,000 The Emperor made 20 Legions of Space Marines. Legions ranged in size from 10,000 to 250,000 based on casualties and difficulty in making a particular type of Space Marine.
Then a Rebellion happened, called the Horus Herecy. Where 9 of the surviving 18 Legions rebelled, now called heretics.
However the lost two Primarchs met their fate before this.. These missing 2 Legions were just a reference to the lost Legions of Rome (later lore confirms only the primarchs died, they didn't get wiped out and tons of their survivors were merged into the Ultramarines)... but kinda got adopted by the fandom as the create your own Legion (one Evil, typically the 2nd; one Loyal, typically the 11th). It's also where if you want a unique trait you use these Legions as potential orgins of their geneseed, or the Adeptus Mechanichus modifying the geneseed because they do do this in the lore. Usually to try to fix a flaw but sometimes just because they think they know better than the Emperor did. And yes, even the memories of the Primarchs were erased of the 11th and 2nd Legions, then they were sworn to secrecy on the false happy memories they were given. Even the Traitor Primarchs all have stayed silent on the issue, it seems their Fate was either too sad or too big a risk to them to even mention again. All we've gotten is teases like the 2nd Primarch was a massive asshole, and implications the Space Wolves may have killed one or both Primarch, and we know the survivors were put into the Ultramarine Chapter (but their Primarchs are either dead or something worse...). There's whole deep dive fan theory videos on these two, with lots of crazy theories and all the known snippets of details, after you learn a little more these are fun rabbit holes to go down. The fanfiction community loves to use them as self-insert, so beware any info you find on them it could be coming from a fanfic wiki and not a lore wiki.
As to the Horus Herecy, at the end of the Herecy, Horus was seiging Earth. Where the Emperor, jaghatai Khan, Rogal Dorn, Vulkan, and Sanguinius were. He outnumbered their survivors, but was about to be hit by massive amounts of reinforcements from Roboute Guilliman (the Ultramarines). So he turned off the shield on his ship in a Gambit that his father and brothers couldn't resist the opportunity to kill him before he was forced to retreat... but if he killed the Emperor then Horus would win. They did what he expected and teleported onto his ship to kill him, but ended up separated. Sanguinius of the Blood Angels found him first. Sanguinius was by far the best fighter of the Primarchs but Horus was being empowered by 4 chaos gods. So he tried to turn Sanguinius while faking being weaker, then sley Sanguinius when that didn't work. The Emperor found him next, it turned out Horus being empowered by Chaos was stronger than the Emperor but the Emperor was smarter and crafter. He made an illusion where someone else was him, and Horus slew that different person. The Emperor pretending to be that other person then talked Horus to relinquishing that power from the Chaos gods, and in that moment the Emperor revealed he was still alive and killed Horus but not before being mortally wounded himself (and splitting his soul in half before the fight, the half outside his body may or may not be a newly formed God called the Star Child). Old lore states he completely obligated his soul, new lore implies the Emperor more cleaned it of corruption but had to kill him to do it, so he could potentially be resurrected. 40k is all about the unreliable narrator though, so conflicting lore is no big deal. It's all kinda one big choose what you want to believe things with all the characters and lore being from unreliable. Especially Alpharious and Omegion, as their first and final words are literally "everything I say is a lie".
Anyways after the Horus Herecy the surviving Primarch of the Ultramarines, Roboute Guilliman, feared it was too much power for any 1 man to rule hundreds of thousands of Space Marines. Even though he himself had by far the most survivors and therefore was giving up more power than any of the other survivors. So each Legion, kept 1,000 Space Marines, now dubbed Chapters. Any that fell outside these selected Marines formed new Chapters from the 9 loyal Legions. Effectively some Legions were so decimated they couldn't even make a new Chapter. While others were able to make hundreds. This was called the second founding, and at least 666 chapters were made (including the 9 loyal Legions now renamed chapters), as the 666th is the Grey Knights made from psykers (basically wizard Space Marines) from all chapters.
Shortly thereafter Roboute got mortally poisoned and they basically froze him in status to find a cure.
During the thousands of years between the 31th millennia and the 41st millennia. More Chapters were created by the Adeptus Mechanichus (see Brickies Factions video). It was done in waves, so we got more founding after the 2nd. In each hundreds of new chapters we're made to replace Chapters that got wiped out. Currently there's records of at least 26 foundings, but details on many is lost (this way players can make their own chapters).
Fast forward to the 41st millennia, and Roboute Guilliman has returned from being locked in status and cured. He found that yes, the Chapter idea stopped the Imperium from falling to well fallen Space Marines rebelling. But simultaneously a chapter of a thousand Space Marines isn't going to stop a Traitor Legion of tens of thousands plus demons. So the Imperium was slowly dying against an endless onslaught.
Thankfully one of Roboute's allies a Mechanichus member named Cawl, had upgraded the Space Marines to be more powerful, faster, and smarter. Basically a foot taller with even more extra organs than before with upgraded armor. He had created hundreds of thousands of new Primarus Marines, and found a way to upgrade the 'first born' Marines to become Primarus.
Anyways Roboute put a loophole into his thousand per chapter rule 10,000 years before. Chapters on Crusades to reconqure the galaxy and not playing defense, were allowed to go past 1,000 in preparation of inevitable casualties. So Roboute just launched the biggest Crusade since 10,000 years ago and before the Horus Herecy. All while still keeping the chapters, just now often technically above the 1,000 limit because of the Crusade loophole.
Now there's a gimmick with Chapters that weren't originally Legions. We don't always know who their progenitor Legion was. We often get claims or speculation but conflicting evidence. Some might actually be made of Traitor geneseed, or a blending of two or more Legions, or maybe from the two lost Legions. So insert your own speculation here on any non 1st founding chapter (meaning the original 20, uh, 18, Legions)
Now back to the Ultramarines, they had the most survivors, so got the most founding successor chapters and 3/4th of all Loyal Space Marine Chapters are successors of theirs... we as fans know technically they had merged in the survivors of the lost two Legions. So a lot of successor chapters are likely from the lost 2 Legions but nearly no one else knows that in universe, and they'd kill you to prevent the risk of Rebellion if they found out you knew. Then hunt down anyone you could have possibly told too. All history of the lost two Legions will be purged. Of the few characters who know and are allowed to, they wonder what these lost two Primarchs could have possibly done to be so wiped from history because even Horus wasn't erased from the records.
Later, Lion El Johnson returned too (Of the Dark Angels). And he basically just summoned all his descendant chapters and threw them into his fleet. So they still exist, but kinda don't either. He's basically just remade his old legion, just now with lots of paint themes. He wasn't too happy Roboute broke up his legion.

The 2nd and 11th legions are permanently "unknown" so that Games Workshop always has a mysterious possible heritage for any weird splint legion from semi-canon properties (or even fan works) like the Dawn of War games, where the Blood Ravens are just completely an unknown origin. They're Loyalist Marines and they steal and wargear that isn't bolted down and they love it.
Where did they originate from? Dunno. Who's their Primarch? Not a clue. Maybe they're a splinter of the Blood Angels, but they're denying everything.
Fan-made or author-made stuff too, like the "Emperor's Shadows".
Nobody knows where they came from, but they're canon for now.

As to demon Primarchs... it's actually a sidegrade not an upgrade. A regular Primarch can still beat them. They may look bigger and stronger, but essentially they also lost things to gain a physical increase in size.
Basically the soul of the Primarch got kicked out and replaced by a demon. The Soul of the Primarch is where most of their power comes from, as it's effectively the soul of a minor God who can break fate. Now, while the original soul is gone they do retain the memories of the Primarch. However the demon now running their body is usually a sliver of the Chaos God they now follow.
The original soul of Fulgrum for example is now inside a clone body, which is stuck in a time loop. So trapped but potentially able to come back into the story later.
Yes, Primarchs are effectively gods, their mortal body can be killed and/or their souls ripped out of the body... but baring possibly Horus (though some new lore might have just retconned this) are able to return after death into a new body.

The Ultramarines used to be the end all, be all, best Legion in the Emperium, usually not for legit reasons, but because one of the writers, Matt Ward I think it was, made them that way. They were his favorite Legion, and simply made them the best and lost very few, if any battles at all. Then a few years ago, they were nerfed so that they weren't Mary Sues, and I think they poke fun at how perfect and serious they constantly were.

    @edim108 Před 14 dny

2nd and 11th Legions are a carry over from very early 40K. It was basically "make your own legion" one for Loyalists and one for Chaos. They eventually scrapped that idea and went with "make your own chapters from already existing legions" and in universe the two legions got the ultimate erradication sanction where they were wiped out from all records and even- memories.
There's a scene in one of the books where Horus talks with Malcador- Emperor's 2nd in comand and best friend- and he tries saying the name of one of the "lost Primarchs" but Malcador force chokes him so hard blood vessels in his eyes pop and he almost gets his windpipe completely crushed. Horus was on the floor grasping for air with the Khan and Alpharius there freaked out and scared which is a testiment to how powerful Malcador is when he scares a dude that solo wiped an entire army of Orks in 30 minutes flat and a dude that was raised by him from birth.

Imagine jumping into a sewer for no reason, rolling in shit, not _telling anyone_ that you did it, then getting mad when no one volunteers to give you a sponge bath after you're done. As an eternal Iron Warriors and Perturabo simp (Iron Within, Iron Without) Yes, Perturabo is a whiny bitch. But god DAMN does he deserve to be. This man knuckled down and accepted being handed the WORST assignments for himself and his Legion. Siege warfare is some of the slowest, most grueling, most tedious combat that can exist, punctuated by frantic and frenzied close-quarters slaughter, and wherever there was a siege that his brothers and their legion deemed to difficult or too inglorious to engage with themselves, Perturabo was inevitably sent there. The kind of savage yet coldly calculated battles where men's lives are spent like ammunition, by the thousand at a time, to secure a hill, or a trench, or a single square mile of territory, over, and over, and over again. Without pause or rest. Resupplying and recruiting on the move.
And the worst part? Perturabo hated doing all of it. He was an engineer and an inventor. He wanted to BUILD things. Great works of architecture, art, and engineering. He wanted to make a utopia for mankind. And here he was, tearing things down and slaughtering his people just to secure increments of land and space for the Imperium.
And NOBODY appreciated them. Nobody thanked them, nobody honored them. Hell, barely anybody even knew them. Even fucking ANGRON AND KURZE, two of the most fucked up bastards in existence, were at least feared and respected, and they didn't do half the work the 4th did. Because what the did was not glorious or righteous or worth taking pictures of. It was just horror. Horror for what they felt was a noble cause, but horror nonetheless, and nobody wants to think about that shit.
Even after turning traitor, it just got worse. Nobody appreciated him. He's the only reason Horus and the rest of them even GOT to the Sol system, let alone made landfall on Terra. And while Horus was doing fuck all, Angron was fucking around, Fulgrim was fucking around, nobody was listening to him, he was busy getting shit done as he systematically broke every last defense and bastion on the throneworld. Until finally Horus threw the job at someone else for no good fucking reason and Perty finally just said, "FUCK IT, I'm DONE, you ASSHOLES are ON YOUR OWN", took his Legion and left.
