The thing about the Alpha Legion is that when Bricky said 'we think' they're Chaos, he's not kidding. They're destabilisation specialists, and Chaos kinda SHOULD HAVE WON by now. There's a school of thought that says the Alpha Legion infiltrated Chaos itself, and are helping preserve the Imperium by very carefully messing with Chaos' plans.

Alpha legion play the smartest, and least "fair" of all the legions. a squad of 10 once took down an entire (HEAVILY populated and industrialized) star system.... they hijacked a bunch of random farm workers, injected them with a custom made fungus, and let them go. no ransom, no nothing. in a manner of months, the fungus has spread into the water supply and completely WIPED OUT the agri-world that supplied the other worlds in the system. by the end of the year food riots, governmental collapse, and civil war (financed and supported by the alpha legion) was system wide and the legion itself NEVER FIRED A SHOT.

Lion El'Jonson of the Dark Angels and Leman Russ of the Space Wolves actually had a rivalry during the great crusade. It culminated in them having a fist fight with each other which lasted more than 24 hours. Eventually Jonson knocked Leman out with a sucker punch because Leman Russ started laughing at how stupid it was that they were fighting each other. Despite this rivalry they both deeply respected each other and their legions. IRON WITHIN IRON WITHOUT! I love the Iron warriors so much. Something Bricky didn't really expand on about them is even though they're a "traitor legion" they aren't really followers of chaos, more like an employee that hates their boss/company and left for a better job. As he mentioned, instead of worshipping the dark gods, they essentially use them as a tool. They dislike chaos enough that, when demonic mutations begin on a marine, they amputate the mutation and replace it with machinery. At the current point in time they could be considered one of the most powerful of the traitor legions, as they are one of the most unified traitor legions left.

I love the Blood Angels, because their primarch was the closest thing they had (besides Vulcan of course) to a truly good Primarch, who looked at their marines - outcasts that were shunned by the rest of the imperium because of how brutal they were on the battlefield, - and knelt before them himself, because he felt that he was the one who needed to prove his worth to these warriors who bled for a thankless galaxy.
And when he died, they lost the ONE person in the world who truly cared for them and saw them as more than monsters, and they fucking slaughtered every heretic and demon in their way while under the effects of the Black Rage, pushing a large portion of the invading heretic faction during the Horus Heresy back.
I would HIGHLY recommend either MajorKill's video on the Blood Angels/Sanguinius, or Oculus Imperia's video on the Blood Angel's history. They're both fantastic.

Love the reaction and the Alpha Legion choice.
A couple of notes on the Alpha Legion. The first as you probably noticed is that their allegiance is up in the air. This is largely due to the fact that the one word descriptor of the AL probably should have been “secrets” or “lies”. No one is sure what their long term goal is, partly due to their strongly decentralized nature and their use of sleeper cells.
This ties into another aspect of the Alpha Legion which is duty. The Alpha Legion fully understood its role in the Imperium and accepted their duty above all else. When the heresy happened there were so many different cells working on different objectives that they just kept doing them whether their goals were pro or anti Imperium, without new orders they will simply keep doing their job. That also ties into the “I am Alpharius” thing. They are all Alpharius because their individual identity if meaningless in the grand scheme of things, they are all Alpharius because they are all working toward the same goal.
Finally, surprisingly, they’re one of the more humanitarian legions in that they work to save civilians and extract their human operatives where ever possible without ruining the mission.
It was great to see more 40K content on here and I love all your videos so keep it up.

So Bricky skips over the 2nd and 11th legions because in the official lore, those primarchs and their legions vanished without a trace and all records of them have disappeared. @@sakrefunholy So IIRC the thing about both legions is that everything about why they were forgotten, and what happened to them is not talked about. All data was purged, no one was allowed to speak about it, those who knew either had to die, had to swear on their death to never tell, or had their memories or ability to recall it removed.
While this implies some sort of vile act even more horible than what Horus did (and let's not forget: He mortally wounded the Emperor after turning 8 other legions against him!) it might also be a safeguard for said legions, in order to aid them in some sort of long-term plan.

I'm not sure you heard it during the Alpha Legion Part, but No One actually knows whether they're actually Loyalists or Traitors.
Basically, the Twin Primarchs Alpharius and Omegon were separated, one raised by the Emperor (theory is that one of these two was the first Primarch that the Emperor met, and personally raised.) while the other twin was the last Primarch found. and when the Horus Heresy started, They both understood that Chaos was bad and that they had to take it down for the Emperor, so they did it in the way they do things, infiltration. They joined the Traitors.
the issue afterwards was then what their goal was. one believed that Chaos had to win the Heresy, reasoning that Chaos would basically burn themselves out because that twin believed that the Emperor's goal was to destroy Chaos, while the other twin wanted to simply just keep sabotaging the Traitors and Chaos because that other twin believed that the Emperor's goal was to free Humanity from Chaos. but during the Heresy, one of the twins died, supposedly the one named Alpharius, but it could have also been Omegon pretending to be Alpharius, or it could have been neither. None of the other Primarchs even knew that they were Twins! they only knew that the Primarch of the Alpha Legion was named Alpharius.
and none of this is 100% confirmed. so no one knows who's alive, which twin is which, and what''s their ultimate goal! who knows!? not even Alpha Legion knows.

imperial fist fanboys often make jokes about the iron warriors but it should be noted during the heresy the iron warriors had successfully besieged the fortress of Terra shortly before the Emperor killed Horus.

Something that Bricky didn't have time to go into because of the video format is that pretty much all of the heretic legions (maybe except alpha legion) are very sympathetic up to a point (It is 40k after all, there are no good guys, ehh salamanders are closest in marines). Anyway, they're sympathetic in that most of the reasons they fell are very human failings that could have been overcome if the Emperor had actually been a good dad and paid attention to his sons more instead of treating them like tools. Basically, the vast majority of this is the emperor's fault.

  • @crimsonknight7011
    @crimsonknight7011 Před rokem +3

For the Thousand Sons every single one of them was a psyker which even a single one is rare so something was going on. Before Magnus took over they were almost extinct because their bodies were becoming mutated beasts. It is believed that Magnus traded an eye to save his legion from any more mutations. After the Emperor banned psykers they “tried” to follow it, but Magnus used it to try to warn the Emperor of the Heresy about to happen but instead broke the secret warp portal the Emperor was working on.
The emperor demanded for Magnus to be arrested and brought to him to answear for his actions. However, Horus was now corrupted but others didn’t know yet so instead of telling the Space Wolves to arrest Magnus he told them that the Emperor wanted them wiped out which they were all to happy to do.
As per the dust in their armor, after they escaped into the warp to get away from the wolves the “flesh change” happened again and they started to uncontrollably mutate once more. Ahriman who was one of the legions best psykers decided to attempt a spell that would stop them from any more mutation. As the spell went there was a giant lightning storm that struck the marines welding their armor shut and turning all but the strongest into dust. The vast majority of the legion are nothing more than automatons with no personality or conscientiousness and only do what they are commanded to do with no hint of who they once were. Ahriman was banished by Magnus for this, but in all dark truth his spell worked since they no longer mutated, it’s kinda like that whole thing of making a wish with a genie where they give you exactly what you wished for but twisted the end result.

His father offered no kind of comfort he just referred to him as the 13th has returned. And in his mind he believes that the emperor does not care one iota about him.
To some extent that is true but the emperor does on some level does care about his sons. The reason why he has received no comfort is because the emperor's mind is completely shattered. And Gilliman misinterpreted what happened.

@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames yeah well imagine you have been fighting a war for thousands of years to try to reunify the Galaxy. To create a safe space for Humanity to thrive to rebuild the Golden Age of humanity. You trying to get people to build to get supply lines going and trying to get the. Adeptus mechanic is to invent something and know how something works instead of just keeping replicating things. And don't know how they work you have to understand the great crusade was coming to an end and things were getting back on track. Things were not that bad there were no religious zealots the emperor kept telling people to don't worship him as a god.
They were actually normal people sure there were a few slaves here and there but. It wasn't very bad The Hive cities were actually making a comeback and turning into actual regular cities. And actually paying the citizens things were looking up the Eldar were kept at Bay.
There were no necrons no tyranids the orcs were pounded almost to Oblivion things were going good. And it was only going to get better since the emperor was going to give Humanity The ultimate gift. Access to the web way now what's special about this is they would no longer have to use the warp for travel.
No longer would they be going through the warp to feed the chaos gods they would. starve to death and they would eventually disappear. And citizens were going to be moved into the web way.
And it speculated that the emperor plan to get rid of the Dark Eldar completely eradicating them. And turning the dark city of the Eldar into a paradise and it's very possible he could have done it.
The plan was to have Magnus sit The Golden throne and power the web way. That would be his ultimate sacrifice the ban on psykers would have been removed and Magnus could sit on The Golden throne.
And then the emperor would have made one last campaign against. The Dark Eldar settle it with humans and the chaos Gods would have been starved to death over a course of a few millennia.
Eventually the Space Marines would have been decommissioned possibly killed like the thunder warriors or. Be redistributed as some kind of politicians probably because that was the idea Gilliman had.
For his legion he wanted his legion to be educated because. He wanted the Space Marines after all the fighting was done to be politicians statesman leaders. Future governors of planets he wanted them to be educated and sophisticated not just these battle-hardened warriors.
Because eventually The crusade was going to be over and things were just going to be looking up. There was no religion of the imperium things were looking good.
And then Horus had to lose his mind and start the heresy. And then everything after that fell into. Poop Hive cities became worse Imperial colonies became worse the Imperial cult was established the age of apostasy started. Religion started to be cracked down upon if you didn't believe in the emperor you were shot on sight and this is not what gilliman wanted this is not what he fought for.
He did not fight for a mankind to be superstitious zealots and he hates every single. One of these zealots he hates these people he absolutely wants to kill them. But he knows he can't do that if it was any other son of the emperor if it was lion el Johnson everyone would be dead..
The highlords would be dead he would go crusading against all these. Inquisition freaks he would dismantle the Imperial religion. But Gilman knows he can't undo all this damage by just killing everyone he has to do it over time and it's weighing heavily on his mind.
If it was any other son any other son of the emperor people would be dead people would be dying left and right. They even tried to betray gilliman and have him examined by inquisitors to see if he was the son of the emperor that's how insane this has gotten right there in front of you a son of the emperor has returned but they don't want to believe it because they want to hold on to power.

So, a couple quick explanations (some of which may be stuff you already picked up on, and I apologize in advance):
    1) The phrase "touching grass" is an internet culture slang term for going outside, essentially unplugging for a bit. Totally understandable not to get that, as you guys probably "touch grass" a lot more than most of us on YT.
    2) The reason for the reference to the 2nd and 11th legions and immediately hopping into the next legion is because, canonically, all knowledge of those legions specifically has been expunged from *every record.* Even the people who "know" don't really know in a weird kinda way.
    3) Bricky started off with "Allegiance:" And would state whether they were loyal/loyalist (still with the Imperium) or traitor/heretic (now running with Chaos). Which makes the Alpha Legion even *more* interesting because, while they're heretics at face value, *no one knows* if the Alpha Legion are actually traitors or if they're playing the long con and trying to sabotage Chaos from the inside, sleeper style. People have debated that bit of lore HEAVILY.
Finally, I gotta say, my likes in the legions are remarkably similar to Bethany's. The Alpha Legion's intrigue is awesome and makes you think, the Salamanders are the closest you get to "good guys" in the world of space marines, and the Space Wolves aesthetic is just plain cool!

I'm not sure if others mentioned this, but Legions 2 & 11 are glossed over in this video because lorewise they are expunged from the records completely. There are some cagey references in the lore to them having been purged before the Horus Heresy even occured, their Primarchs having been executed, and their surviving marines having been spread out across the other Legions (possibly explaining why the Ultramarines had so goddamn many marines sorta out of the blue.). The reason why those two are forgotten while the later heretics are remembered is mainly because it was possible to hide the treason of the 2nd and 11th, but once half the Imperium revolted and turned to Chaos, that was a completely different matter. There's no hiding that.
Now, the REAL explanation for why the 2nd and 11th legions are unknown is because Games Workshop simply kept the spots open so that players could simply make up their own primarchs and legions to use and play with, because the hobby used to be more free-form.
On another note, the touching grass thing is just a meme from Twitter to tell someone to get off the internet and go do something in real life. So I think Bricky was just saying he'd been offline for a while doing RL shit, hence the shirt change halfway through the video.

The Second and Eleventh legions, and primarchs have had their entire histories purged from the Imperial records, because before the heresy they seemingly did something REALLY bad, and messed up in a really bad way, and were essentially wiped out never to be mentioned again

Didn't see anyone post this, but I think the Alpha Legion has a fun little historical connection.
The British had a team responsible for countering German intel during WW2, especially during the lead-up to the D-Day landings: The Twenty Committee, named for the Roman numerals XX
Or, a "double cross," if you prefer

  • @Drakefance5

So the Primarchs of the Alpha Legion, Alpharius and Omegon were shown two possible futures during the early days of the heresy.
    Either
"Horus wins, and Chaos triumphs, a terrible prospect, but likely. He will secretly hate himself for the atrocities committed in his name, If he wins, his fury will accelerate, along with his self-loathing. He will immolate the human species inside two or three generations. The self-destructive, redemptive urge in Horus will drive him to exterminate mankind in shame. Even his closest allies will war against him in Final Armageddon. Chaos will burn brighter than ever before, and then will be extinguished. It's greatest victory will flare, and then gutter, as the dying imperium takes it to it's grave. The galaxy will be spared through the sacrifice of the human race."
    And the alternative:
"If the Emperor wins, stagnation will seize the Imperium. It will seek to perpetuate itself, over and again, across thousands of years. But it will decay, slowly and surely. It will decay, and gradually allow Chaos to seep back in and consume it."
They replied with "I stand for the Emperor, in all things, I am loyal to him. And I cannot break that bond, He has many great ambitions and the noblest of intentions. But I know that above all else, He is determined to stand firm against the Rise of Chaos. He has always known the truth of it. The overthrow of Chaos is his greatest wish, So what I do. I will do for the Emperor" Before firing upon friendly imperial ships and cutting communication from the imperium.
This would imply that they remained loyal by joining chaos, but this was 10,000 years prior to the current timeline and Horus is already dead but the Alpha Legion are the masters of lies and trickery. So who knows what their real intentions are at this point. They could be Heretics or Loyalists in Disguise.

and in case you dont understand what's the deal with the 2nd and 11th legion: they got ultra-expunged from all records, their primarchs dead (presumably), their legions slaughtered wholesale (presumably by the wolves)

Chaos legions and Loyalist legions. Then the black templars who hold the God emperor as the living God made flesh. Even being loyal doesn't really mean good by our definition. It means loyal to the empire of man, not we are the good guys. I highly recommened you watch the warhammer+ videos, they are so well done and only about 15min each.

To clarify the jokes about the 2nd and 11th legion.
They are referred to as the lost legions and there is no complete explanation to what happened to them, only that all records about them are gone. And asking about said legion is a quick way to be deleted from history.
Another thing to note is that the World Eaters and Night Lords share much similarities in the lore,
Both legions' primarchs were driven insane before being found by the emperor (In Angron's case he had already been implanted with the butcher's nails. And in Konrad Curze case he was constantly given visions about the future from the chaos gods)
Thus tragically, the moment the legions found their fathers, they were doomed.
Konrad Curze is actually one of the more tragic characters in wh40k because he is the embodiment of the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
Starting out with trying to save as many people as possible, only to turn into more and more extreme methods until he would flay thousands to save millions.
Oh and if you’re wondering where “I wish to pet this creature” comes from it is from “If the emperor had a text to speech device” by Bruva Alfabusa

Honestly, the reason I kind of don't ship Chaos is because it's really hard finding Chaos controlled populations that have a decent standard of living. The Imperium really doesn't care what you do at the end of the day as long as they get their tithe so while most worlds suck you get places like the 500 worlds of Ultramar which are pretty fine places to live. To my knowledge Choas doesn't really have that. Guess the caveat is they don't have the resources either so what do you expect but still.
Still Salamanders for life. Even though they get no love.

One important thing to understand why Lion is the way he is is the fact that he grew up in a world full of chaos mutated monsters having to survive completely alone for decades until he finally saw a human for the first time. This left sequels in his personality, paranoia, great difficulty in understanding the emotions or motivations of others even in simple contexts, etc...
The Blood Angels try to be optimistic about their curses, trying to use that rage against the enemies of the empire, appearing more to the common people and avoiding arrogance because they know that they are far from perfect. His chapter lord, Dante, is the oldest loyal marine, not dreadnought, he has been chapter lord for over a thousand years and who knows how old he was when he reached that position. He is currently the second most powerful and responsible person in the Empire as regent of the Nihilus Empire.
The Alpha Legion trick is kind of boring for me because when everything is a lie nothing is true, when everyone is Alpharius no one is Alpharius.

Loyalist: Dark Angels, White Scars, Space Wolves, imperial Fists, Blood Angels, Iron Hands, Ultramarines, Salamanders, and Raven Guard
Traitor: Emperor’s Children, Iron Warriors, Night Lords, World Eaters, Death Guard, Thousand Suns, Sons of Horus (Black Legion), Word Bearers, and Alpha Legion
Book recommendations: Night Lords trilogy (Soul Hunter, Blood Reaver, Void Stalker) First Heretic (pretty much Lorgar’s heretic origin story), Betrayer (Sequel to First Heretic that focuses on the World Eaters) And Horus Rising. Personally my favorites are the World Eaters, Death Guard and the Night Lords. All three are extremely tragic. Another fun thing if you picked up on it, The majority of the Thousand Suns are now dust that is sealed in their armor and are mindless(I think it was every Marine that is not a Psyker). This was caused by a guy name Ahriman who was trying to prevent the legion from mutating because of a gene seed defect. Ahriman at first thought he did a good job but was banished by Magnus and is now trying to find a way to reverse his spell or give the marines their consciousness back
