The fact it takes 2 or three people to breach a door each time or lift a twig obstruction should tell everybody that gears got gyno bitch tits and need to roid back up. I mean you could play as little piss ants but wtf would you want to ? When you got Cole and Marcus still alive albeit older. Make Kait the new Queen have a few acts where you play her giving into the dark side kill off whoever between del or jd finish off with the original line up, sideline the survivor of the Reyna breaking neck scene for ptsd because their both soy cock beta males and gonna cry over survivors guilt. The original team ends the crisis again They can even justify all the team lifts for sciatica because their old and can play with the comedy their. Makes Kaits death scene Baird cole carmine and Marcus gangbanging her with lancer chainsaws Alice and dice and tag her ass with an incendiary.
Dizzy is the best lmfao i loved gears 3 when marcus said "dizzy that you? Takin on the whole grub army again?" I was like hell yea he is, dizzy is the ULTIMATE redneck lmfao
Hell in my opinion, Lizzie should’ve gotten way more screen time. Her first choice was to drive a truck into the waste of space fking creature that the Coalition created(The Snatcher) and stick a grenade onto it. Total badass. She outshined Kait’s entire character and I was kinda pissed they went back on the whole Carmine character has to die haha
They don’t even do it right I have no problem with the carmines being an unfortunate family but killing them to the gears writers is just a requirement. Lizzie has a solid introduction but they kill her too quickly, they should have done something similar to Benjamin have her be around the main cast so we fully come to love her through the shit show world they live in then kill them off. It gives the emotional impact that Benjamin’s death and Clayton’s fake out death had. Anthony also had enough time to be likable before he passed.

The original characters are basically the ninja turtles. Marcus is the fearless leader (Leo), Dom is the angry rebellious one (Raph), Baird is the tech whizz (Donatello), and obviously Cole is the party guy (Mikey). There is some blending like how Baird is rude but cool like Raph while Dom has a soft side like Leo but it pretty much works. None of them could carry the game on their own, they will always work best as a team.
Kait is a product of insecurity. They probably were told Gears needs a female main character with the main posse, but were too insecure in doing so. So instead of having a soldier who just happens to be a woman, they do the "overly macho and douchy tomboy" route. They didn't have the condifence to pull a female protagonist off otherwise 'cause they aren't confident that a woman could have a strong and intimidating presence that a hulking masculine man could. She's too serious because they thought that's the only way to compensate her lack of physical mass. But as Lizzie shows: They can pull it off. If they'd be more confident in the character and not get too bogged down by the gender they pick, Kait would've been a great badass character.
You can get away with an overly macho tomboy if you do it right, like with Sam in Gears of war 3, or with Vasquez in the Aliens movie. What doesn't work with a female who's supposed to be a soldier is her being immature, disobeying orders and going AWOL, and everyone around her just kinda being ok with it and her never facing any consequences. In previous games in this franchise the COG sends Marcus to prison for 14 years (Seran years in Earth years it would be 18 years), for disobeying orders, and only let him out when the war is going so poorly they have no choice but to draft convicts. Baird and his entire squad were almost ended, and even after the last bit of judgment he got a permanent demotion from lieutenant to private. The COG has been shown to not tolerate insubordination
The thing about the Settlement 2 massacre is, JD was full within his right to order shots fired. Del and Kait acted so shocked, but not 5 seconds before JD told them how a Molotov cocktail was thrown at them.

You know what I don't get? In Gears 4 the DBs had shock variants of their weapons that basically fired taser rounds or something. Why didn't they use those guns instead? Send a message with squads armed with lethal force?
I was upset that we didn’t get to play as JD more in gears five. Especially after the character development he had pushing after the start. The man had an actual story in terms of doing whatever is necessary to protect his fellow soldiers. But we didn’t get to see much of it since we had to see the majority of the story through Kate’s eyes.
I hate how they made Kait seem like an estrogen emotionally fueled woman 🤦🏿♀️ We need another Lizzie! Hell even Sofia was pretty decent on Judgement compared to Kate on 5. Anya and Sam showed some spurts of emotion on 3 but I loved how they never broke rank. They stayed fully disciplined throughout the game.
Hell you feel more sorry and treat like one of the boys with Sofia as she was treat like a complete nobody by her "onyx" peers still looked as a cadet.
JD was easily the best character out of all of the new guys. In four, he was too joking and didn’t take things seriously. In five, he did grow to be more serious but with an occasional quip. He additionally was given an actual backstory and flaw that later caused him to be overbearing and somewhat callous in act two. Definitely would have been a redeeming character if he was involved more.
And also I believe that on 6 we will know that he's the one who's got his ass killed, because the other one is black, so they will probably make the virtue signaling on him

To me new gears failed becasue they went from a focus on "How do I eliminate these monsters in the most gruesome way ever?", to "How do I create a compelling soap drama like Game of Thrones?" I liked gears for it's overly masculine astheatic combined with monsters and a no bullshit simple to follow story. Now it's filled with too many characters, wimps fighting buffed ass monsters and all sorts of drama..... I just want to shoot monster man....
It's a really big irony that secondary characters like Oscar and Reyna feel way more developed than the main cast. Still they can make Kait be an awesome character if they get her attitude right with situations. That's what feels wrong about her, she's always like "oh no... anyway..."
A big point to make is that Gears 1-3 and even Judgement had small talk between characters that felt relevant to their lives and even the mission. Play gears of war 4 and or 5 and you will notice the MASSIVE lack of any actual banter. Add insult to injury JD, Kait and Del are suppose to have grown up together. Gears of war 4 had massive wasted lore potiential particularly at the Fenix estate. Marcus is suiting up Kait with Anya's family jewels of armor. Why doesn't Kait like ask JD and Marcus what Anya was like. Or press JD why he fights with Marcus about Anya's grave so much. Probably my personal issue with Gears 5 is probably the ever more prevelant lack of banter. Kait and Del are out on a mission ALONE with one another and the best in terms of banter is talk about how bloody cold it is. Or how bad JD has become without like ya know hashing it out. Its not like someone is spying on them for chist sake. They ARE ALONE. The Swarm isn't about to jump out of the ground and tell JD or Marcus that Kait and Del are talking trash about them. As if that wasn't bad enough you get to the second half of the game. And they waste the fact that JD has gone rogue for him to just be tossed aside as another hopeless follower. Why doesn't Kait like threaten to kill JD after the shit he's pulled. Have Kait stop pulling her punches maybe have Kait blame JD for the loss of her mother. Some sort of tension other than the stereotypical. "The world ends if we don't do this BS." If I had friends I grew up with I'd have like some coded speak that only we know how to understand. Maybe even some inside jokes. Its stuff like this that would make it seem more plausable that Kait, JD and Del grew up together. "Stuff like remember that time that JD or Del did this that or something about a previous adventure." Something that like adds to the 3 or like 4 years that seperates Gears 4 from 5.
Really good point the new games do a really poor job portraying these characters relationships with each other and it contributes to why they’re so flat. I’ve been meaning to replay the old games to see the difference with in game dialogue because it’s been a little while but from what I remember it used to be much better.

I didn't come to get a 30K page thesis shoved down my throat is my response to the books and comic, graphic novels. I'd rather pay 10K for a single solid actual AAA game than pay 40 to 80 dollars 20 times over.
And just to add salt to the wound of my points... Resident Evil 7 Biohazard and Village did a better job of telling an actual story than the entirety of Gears 4 and 5's writing and plot combined. And tbh most of the Biohazard plot line are pretty much a carbon copy of how Final Fantasy is written which is ironically in itself a writing nightmare but it ironically at least has a core plot something that the entire new age of gears of war lacks hugely. Gears of War as an IP is one of the many franchises to stagnate arguably just as bad as MMORPG's age old fabled master piece WOW. Its only saving grace at this point is the past trillogy of its IP.
The skiff riding could have taken god of war's page and had interesting lore/character developing dialogue there. even life after the locust war. SOMETHING other than silence snow or sand
Great vid. Long time Gears fan just playing through it. It's so bad. They intentionally assassinated JD's char, the toxic white male. Propped up Kait, it's all about me, OMG what's happening, I'll kill everyone! And then never finished either one. When was humanity at Danger? Dell is just a beta male supporting Kait. Could have easily kept it on an even keel with both learning lessons and saving the day. I can't help but feel it was all done for virtue signaling. Especially the incident they used to kill of JD, GTFO. Gears is about being hardcore against impossible odds. Not what's right according to whomever or finding yourself. The shit story of 4 didn't do this one any favors.

Ya potentially. For some reason I feel like they were trying to move away from stereotypical over the top badass characters, but I feel like those kind of characters fit the games aesthetic.
They basically made someone’s emo girlfriend that face of the franchise. JD didn’t move the needle in G4 but they should’ve made the transition smoother than making him a war criminal.
Easy Fix: in Gears 6 make JD the protagonist, have Kait becone antagonist savior by embracing the Horde as thier new leader and bring peace to the Sera. No more sequels please
Honestly, it's not that I don't like the characters, I'm just disappointed with how their stories have played out. It just feels like one missed opportunity after another with the new Delta squad, with two paths they could've taken with JD or Kait as the main character from the start, and both of them ending in a car crash that became Gears 5. Here's a couple ideas for fixing this story: -- I don't think the idea of Kait being the main character and focusing on her connection with Myrrha was a terrible idea, but it should've started at the beginning in Gears 4 instead of switching over to her halfway through 5 after a timeskip. The whole "my way or the highway" attitude could be excused when her mother's life was at stake, but after that it's just annoying and childish. Look at characters like Dizzy Wallin and Michael Barrick, both were ex-Stranded and had issues with the COG, but they didn't go mouthing off about it at every opportunity, because they had jobs to do and people depending on them in life or death situations. Though I think Kait could've developed past this, especially when she learned the truth about her dad's military service and began following in his footsteps as a leader. -- As for JD, I feel like he'd be better off without the main focus on him, even if he is Marcus and Anya's son. This new era is about the return of the Locust as the Swarm and their connection with Kait, but the Fenix family issues can still be there in the background, just not the only thing people should focus on while the inhuman, genocidal monsters are coming back from the grave to finish what they started. As for the whole Settlement 2 thing, I think that needs to stay since it's the catalyst for JD and Del leaving the COG and joining the Outsiders, but maybe turn it from a massacre into a heavy-handed crackdown with shock weapons instead of a war crime? And put it on Fahz instead of JD? That revelation was really pointless to be honest. -- Del is basically a blank slate, we know nothing about him other than he became JD's best friend in military school,and he's a bit of a tech head. Kait even asked him about his parents once and he refused to talk about them, which could've led to a line of character development about his past and possibly how he bonded with JD over issues with parents. Honestly, Del is the biggest wasted opportunity of the three of them, and in the most need of development. One last thing, think we could stop killing the Carmines now? Imagine if it was still 4 player co-op and Gary Carmine was the fourth member in Gears 4, then Lizzie in Gears 5.

mate I think if they did some Gears game or DLC involving the Post E-Day war between the Locust and Lambent were you could play as the Locust as Raam, Scorge, Jermad, Or Karn would be something amazing
I feel like they could have done more with Kait and she and many of the new generation of Gears could have been likable if they had written them VERY VERY, differently from how we see them in the games and NOT kill them off in anticlimactic ways. Kait herself could have acted more badass while still getting herself beaten and taught humility throughout her growth instead of arrogantly believing she was important all the time. If they wanted to still make her say the whole "It's about me!" thing, they should have followed up with a reality check like "Oh shit, it was NEVER about me. I need to make sacrifices like everyone else." And let everyone work together for something instead of all the unneeded family drama. Marcus and Dom had drama but it was very minor and easily resolved to emphasize their bond as brothers in arms. The new Gears feel like watching them bicker like a family movie.
dom's sacrifice is not only saddest moment in the series but also the saddest moments in gaming history . gears of war series could be masterpiece in the future if they didnt launch gears 4 and 5

Dont know much about Gears of War in general, but the first time i saw the trailer for Gears 5, going from JD, to playing as a brand new grief stricken protagonist abandon the mission just to go find her mom sounded like trash.
While I don't think Lizzie was all that (considering she's in one act) I think she definitely fit gears of war way more than kait. I think Cole had more depth in the novels/comics
Honestly, the real here problem isn't even Kait's "whining", in fact in a certain sense I even understand her. With Gears 4 we spent more time shooting robots (half the campaign basically) and when the game actually gets good it ends with an ok plot twist. In Gears 5 we had to blame JD and make a very drastic decision in the end. but instead I blame Gears 4 for not knowing how to introduce us to the new characters and not knowing how to characterize them well. Gears 5 had to do 3 jobs in one: give us varied gameplay, be a fake sequel and add lore to the saga. Total failure. -SIDE NOTE- If you think that crying is in the wrong place in a war game I need to tell you that oooh boy how wrong are you guys Just go watch any well-written war film and see if you don't cry. ffs even Mel Gibson cried in "We Were Soldiers"

Call me sexist or whatever cuz she’s a woman if you want but I think it sucked that gears 5 was about Kait. The character of the main group of gears of war 4 I cared least about. JD is Marcus’s son, he’s the Judith grimes of gears of war if you will. So immediately even if he’s a shit character, I care about him more because of the impact it would have on Marcus if something happened to him. I actually didn’t really like him in gears 4 or in act 1 of gears 5 cuz I thought he saw himself as more of a celebrity than a soldier, but that completely changed by the end of 5. So I kinda like him now all things considered. Del and Fahz have an interesting and kinda funny dynamic at times and Marcus is Marcus and the old cogs are the old cogs, they’re always great. Kait is just kinda thrown in there. I don’t really care about her, the outsiders, her story, or her connection to the swarm. In gears 5 I was way more interested in JDs redemption arc than the mystery behind Kaits connection. It was so lame that JD was gone for a lot of the game considering his arc was the one I wanted to see the most of, and that he (at least I think) should’ve been the protagonist of the game in the first place. I will say tho that I miss the macho manliness of the first 3 gears games. Every character was a juiced up basket of testosterone and that’s totally missing in gears 4/5. Even gears 3 had that, and gears 3 had so many badass female characters involved that 1 and 2 sorta lacked, I mean shit I don’t even think the first game had a woman in it unless you include the berserker or Anya’s voice. So I think it’s dope that there were so many badass woman in gears of war 3. But Kait isn’t a badass woman in gears of war. Anya, Sam, Lizzie, Bernie, and even jinn to some degree are good examples of the ones who are. You might disagree and think Jinn is a bitch, and while I agree, you can’t tell me she isn’t a boss bitch too. I think that counts for something.
2:44 for the longest time I was trying so hard to see why I didn’t like her and as soon as I heard this a light bulb when up in my head “that’s it!!!!” I just couldn’t place it for some reason
Lizzy Carmine was badass. In one scene she added to the Carmine family line really well. Something on par with Anthony and Clay, even Ben had a character development to him or at least some kind of emotional arc. Cait and her character just aren't convincing. In addition, something about the story has little to no consequences. The swarm just feels like a light leftover army from the locust with little organization.
I actually have an issue with how they portrayed the terrible situation and decision JD was forced to be in and make. The protest had gone violent, and he had to make a call. What was he supposed to do? Let the people he was in charge of get torched? It’s an awful situation with no clear right or wrong outcome and the game tries to portray it as a black and white situation.
JD didn't need to be "Redeemed" he didn't do anything wrong there was a riot the rioters were throwing incendiary grenades at them of course you mow them down that is the right thing to do. DJ definitely should not have died

I feel JD is worst than Del because his claim to fame is literally Marcus Fenix child. Del While a JD Clone actualluy developed on his own as a tech wiz and actually shown to be a true friend and soldier with brain
As someone who's played all the gears games except 4&5 but I saw all the cutsenes I think it's a huge missed opportunity to not focus on Marcus's son and their relationship Marcus had a implied rocky relationship with his dad and obviously Marcus and son as George Lucas said its poetry it rhymes
Hopefully I'm not the only one but do the characters in this game look less bulky compared to the previous games. Like the characters aren't wearing big armor to fight the swarm or locust

I agree Gears 1-3 including Judgement are the canon ones. Gears 4 & 5 are the Disney Star Wars sequels of Gears… If they wanted to keep the franchise alive, they would’ve at least made remasters of all the games like the they did with Gear 1 UE, but for the next gen console. Or they should’ve made a Gears of War game taking place during the Pendulum Wars (Pre E-Day) and that would’ve been amazing too.

I tried playing Gears 5, but I felt like Gears Goonies or Gears with feelings. I played some of Gears and Gears 2, and from what I've played, it's better than Gears 5. The game feels more like a sitcom than an action game.
Fella Gears of War has always been about feelings. It's about fighting constantly againdt impossible odds. Or did you not notice that Dom's entire motivation for most of Gears 2 is to find his wife?
Look OG gears all the characters are basically just regular guys in a very grim dark world. Their comrades in arms against a terrible foe. It is what helps keep you invested in their plight you feel like some random muscle jocks would kinda be like this. These OG characters are broken people who’s dreams and aspersions are left by the wayside for war. It engages and endures you to them. Marcus and Dom are not some crazy chosen one hero’s. They make mistakes lose loved ones, struggle with depression and how to find a way to keep fighting in a world already destroyed. They are regular guys who can die. The new characters are too contrived. They are chosen ones like Kait and JD who are the sons and daughters of important people often not feeling as grounded. Gears 6 needs a better character lineup or some way of properly addressing the depth of the existing characters in a way that is interesting and unique
Even though he was bland JD was still the only new protagonist I actually started to like.. I was very reluctant to continue on when I heard the next one was all about Kait. That annoying girl who felt like my tag along..
The open worldish sections were easily my least favorite part of the game. I definitely would’ve talked about it more if I was talking more broadly about the game as a whole but ya I’m really baffled that the devs thought it was a good idea to put that in.
J.D was the legitimate heir to the protagonist throne. (Because he's Marcus "The G.G.O.A.T" Fenix's son) But the developers shoehorned in Kait "Muh Feminism" Diaz.
Funny thing is I sorta liked Kate in 4, she was kinda just their but she was alright in 5 she was a trash character who for some reason with absolutely no experience what so ever was bossing around people above her not only in rank but in experience as well like Marcus, you know the man lead in the penjamin wars, the man who not only became a legend who's squad pretty much won the war by themselves, a squad in which he lead.

So basically the next year's game won't have a foundation because gears 5 is basically KAIT Diaz is better than our main character because she's a strong woman of color that's not a foundation for a story and we're not fighting new enemies either they're just rebuilt

They don’t even do it right I have no problem with the carmines being an unfortunate family but killing them to the gears writers is just a requirement. Lizzie has a solid introduction but they kill her too quickly, they should have done something similar to Benjamin have her be around the main cast so we fully come to love her through the shit show world they live in then kill them off. It gives the emotional impact that Benjamin’s death and Clayton’s fake out death had. Anthony also had enough time to be likable before he passed.

The original characters are basically the ninja turtles. Marcus is the fearless leader (Leo), Dom is the angry rebellious one (Raph), Baird is the tech whizz (Donatello), and obviously Cole is the party guy (Mikey). There is some blending like how Baird is rude but cool like Raph while Dom has a soft side like Leo but it pretty much works. None of them could carry the game on their own, they will always work best as a team.
I always think of Carmine when the turtles are mentioned because his voice actor also voiced one in the 80s

Kait is a product of insecurity.
They probably were told Gears needs a female main character with the main posse, but were too insecure in doing so. So instead of having a soldier who just happens to be a woman, they do the "overly macho and douchy tomboy" route. They didn't have the condifence to pull a female protagonist off otherwise 'cause they aren't confident that a woman could have a strong and intimidating presence that a hulking masculine man could. She's too serious because they thought that's the only way to compensate her lack of physical mass.
But as Lizzie shows: They can pull it off. If they'd be more confident in the character and not get too bogged down by the gender they pick, Kait would've been a great badass character.

You can get away with an overly macho tomboy if you do it right, like with Sam in Gears of war 3, or with Vasquez in the Aliens movie. What doesn't work with a female who's supposed to be a soldier is her being immature, disobeying orders and going AWOL, and everyone around her just kinda being ok with it and her never facing any consequences. In previous games in this franchise the COG sends Marcus to prison for 14 years (Seran years in Earth years it would be 18 years), for disobeying orders, and only let him out when the war is going so poorly they have no choice but to draft convicts. Baird and his entire squad were almost ended, and even after the last bit of judgment he got a permanent demotion from lieutenant to private. The COG has been shown to not tolerate insubordination
The thing about the Settlement 2 massacre is, JD was full within his right to order shots fired. Del and Kait acted so shocked, but not 5 seconds before JD told them how a Molotov cocktail was thrown at them.

I was upset that we didn’t get to play as JD more in gears five. Especially after the character development he had pushing after the start. The man had an actual story in terms of doing whatever is necessary to protect his fellow soldiers. But we didn’t get to see much of it since we had to see the majority of the story through Kate’s eyes.

Anya and Sam showed some spurts of emotion on 3 but I loved how they never broke rank. They stayed fully disciplined throughout the game.

JD was easily the best character out of all of the new guys. In four, he was too joking and didn’t take things seriously. In five, he did grow to be more serious but with an occasional quip. He additionally was given an actual backstory and flaw that later caused him to be overbearing and somewhat callous in act two. Definitely would have been a redeeming character if he was involved more.
And also I believe that on 6 we will know that he's the one who's got his ass killed, because the other one is black, so they will probably make the virtue signaling on him

It's a really big irony that secondary characters like Oscar and Reyna feel way more developed than the main cast. Still they can make Kait be an awesome character if they get her attitude right with situations.
That's what feels wrong about her, she's always like "oh no... anyway..."
A big point to make is that Gears 1-3 and even Judgement had small talk between characters that felt relevant to their lives and even the mission.
Play gears of war 4 and or 5 and you will notice the MASSIVE lack of any actual banter. Add insult to injury JD, Kait and Del are suppose to have grown up together.
Gears of war 4 had massive wasted lore potiential particularly at the Fenix estate. Marcus is suiting up Kait with Anya's family jewels of armor. Why doesn't Kait like ask JD and Marcus what Anya was like. Or press JD why he fights with Marcus about Anya's grave so much.
Probably my personal issue with Gears 5 is probably the ever more prevelant lack of banter. Kait and Del are out on a mission ALONE with one another and the best in terms of banter is talk about how bloody cold it is. Or how bad JD has become without like ya know hashing it out. Its not like someone is spying on them for chist sake. They ARE ALONE. The Swarm isn't about to jump out of the ground and tell JD or Marcus that Kait and Del are talking trash about them. As if that wasn't bad enough you get to the second half of the game. And they waste the fact that JD has gone rogue for him to just be tossed aside as another hopeless follower. Why doesn't Kait like threaten to kill JD after the shit he's pulled. Have Kait stop pulling her punches maybe have Kait blame JD for the loss of her mother. Some sort of tension other than the stereotypical. "The world ends if we don't do this BS."
If I had friends I grew up with I'd have like some coded speak that only we know how to understand. Maybe even some inside jokes. Its stuff like this that would make it seem more plausable that Kait, JD and Del grew up together.

Really good point the new games do a really poor job portraying these characters relationships with each other and it contributes to why they’re so flat. I’ve been meaning to replay the old games to see the difference with in game dialogue because it’s been a little while but from what I remember it used to be much better.

I didn't come to get a 30K page thesis shoved down my throat is my response to the books and comic, graphic novels. I'd rather pay 10K for a single solid actual AAA game than pay 40 to 80 dollars 20 times over.
And just to add salt to the wound of my points... Resident Evil 7 Biohazard and Village did a better job of telling an actual story than the entirety of Gears 4 and 5's writing and plot combined. And tbh most of the Biohazard plot line are pretty much a carbon copy of how Final Fantasy is written which is ironically in itself a writing nightmare but it ironically at least has a core plot something that the entire new age of gears of war lacks hugely.
Gears of War as an IP is one of the many franchises to stagnate arguably just as bad as MMORPG's age old fabled master piece WOW. Its only saving grace at this point is the past trillogy of its IP.

Great vid. Long time Gears fan just playing through it. It's so bad. They intentionally assassinated JD's char, the toxic white male. Propped up Kait, it's all about me, OMG what's happening, I'll kill everyone! And then never finished either one. When was humanity at Danger? Dell is just a beta male supporting Kait. Could have easily kept it on an even keel with both learning lessons and saving the day. I can't help but feel it was all done for virtue signaling. Especially the incident they used to kill of JD, GTFO. Gears is about being hardcore against impossible odds. Not what's right according to whomever or finding yourself. The shit story of 4 didn't do this one any favors.

Honestly, it's not that I don't like the characters, I'm just disappointed with how their stories have played out. It just feels like one missed opportunity after another with the new Delta squad, with two paths they could've taken with JD or Kait as the main character from the start, and both of them ending in a car crash that became Gears 5. Here's a couple ideas for fixing this story:
-- I don't think the idea of Kait being the main character and focusing on her connection with Myrrha was a terrible idea, but it should've started at the beginning in Gears 4 instead of switching over to her halfway through 5 after a timeskip. The whole "my way or the highway" attitude could be excused when her mother's life was at stake, but after that it's just annoying and childish. Look at characters like Dizzy Wallin and Michael Barrick, both were ex-Stranded and had issues with the COG, but they didn't go mouthing off about it at every opportunity, because they had jobs to do and people depending on them in life or death situations. Though I think Kait could've developed past this, especially when she learned the truth about her dad's military service and began following in his footsteps as a leader.
-- As for JD, I feel like he'd be better off without the main focus on him, even if he is Marcus and Anya's son. This new era is about the return of the Locust as the Swarm and their connection with Kait, but the Fenix family issues can still be there in the background, just not the only thing people should focus on while the inhuman, genocidal monsters are coming back from the grave to finish what they started. As for the whole Settlement 2 thing, I think that needs to stay since it's the catalyst for JD and Del leaving the COG and joining the Outsiders, but maybe turn it from a massacre into a heavy-handed crackdown with shock weapons instead of a war crime? And put it on Fahz instead of JD? That revelation was really pointless to be honest.
-- Del is basically a blank slate, we know nothing about him other than he became JD's best friend in military school,and he's a bit of a tech head. Kait even asked him about his parents once and he refused to talk about them, which could've led to a line of character development about his past and possibly how he bonded with JD over issues with parents. Honestly, Del is the biggest wasted opportunity of the three of them, and in the most need of development.
One last thing, think we could stop killing the Carmines now? Imagine if it was still 4 player co-op and Gary Carmine was the fourth member in Gears 4, then Lizzie in Gears 5.

I feel like they could have done more with Kait and she and many of the new generation of Gears could have been likable if they had written them VERY VERY, differently from how we see them in the games and NOT kill them off in anticlimactic ways. Kait herself could have acted more badass while still getting herself beaten and taught humility throughout her growth instead of arrogantly believing she was important all the time. If they wanted to still make her say the whole "It's about me!" thing, they should have followed up with a reality check like "Oh shit, it was NEVER about me. I need to make sacrifices like everyone else." And let everyone work together for something instead of all the unneeded family drama. Marcus and Dom had drama but it was very minor and easily resolved to emphasize their bond as brothers in arms. The new Gears feel like watching them bicker like a family movie.

Honestly, the real here problem isn't even Kait's "whining", in fact in a certain sense I even understand her. With Gears 4 we spent more time shooting robots (half the campaign basically) and when the game actually gets good it ends with an ok plot twist. In Gears 5 we had to blame JD and make a very drastic decision in the end. but instead I blame Gears 4 for not knowing how to introduce us to the new characters and not knowing how to characterize them well. Gears 5 had to do 3 jobs in one: give us varied gameplay, be a fake sequel and add lore to the saga. Total failure.

One other thing that should be mentioned about the OG character's is that they looked and sounded like they lived through some dark shit.
Call me sexist or whatever cuz she’s a woman if you want but I think it sucked that gears 5 was about Kait. The character of the main group of gears of war 4 I cared least about. JD is Marcus’s son, he’s the Judith grimes of gears of war if you will. So immediately even if he’s a shit character, I care about him more because of the impact it would have on Marcus if something happened to him. I actually didn’t really like him in gears 4 or in act 1 of gears 5 cuz I thought he saw himself as more of a celebrity than a soldier, but that completely changed by the end of 5. So I kinda like him now all things considered. Del and Fahz have an interesting and kinda funny dynamic at times and Marcus is Marcus and the old cogs are the old cogs, they’re always great. Kait is just kinda thrown in there. I don’t really care about her, the outsiders, her story, or her connection to the swarm. In gears 5 I was way more interested in JDs redemption arc than the mystery behind Kaits connection. It was so lame that JD was gone for a lot of the game considering his arc was the one I wanted to see the most of, and that he (at least I think) should’ve been the protagonist of the game in the first place. I will say tho that I miss the macho manliness of the first 3 gears games. Every character was a juiced up basket of testosterone and that’s totally missing in gears 4/5. Even gears 3 had that, and gears 3 had so many badass female characters involved that 1 and 2 sorta lacked, I mean shit I don’t even think the first game had a woman in it unless you include the berserker or Anya’s voice. So I think it’s dope that there were so many badass woman in gears of war 3. But Kait isn’t a badass woman in gears of war. Anya, Sam, Lizzie, Bernie, and even jinn to some degree are good examples of the ones who are. You might disagree and think Jinn is a bitch, and while I agree, you can’t tell me she isn’t a boss bitch too. I think that counts for something.

Lizzy Carmine was badass. In one scene she added to the Carmine family line really well. Something on par with Anthony and Clay, even Ben had a character development to him or at least some kind of emotional arc. Cait and her character just aren't convincing. In addition, something about the story has little to no consequences. The swarm just feels like a light leftover army from the locust with little organization.
I actually have an issue with how they portrayed the terrible situation and decision JD was forced to be in and make. The protest had gone violent, and he had to make a call. What was he supposed to do? Let the people he was in charge of get torched? It’s an awful situation with no clear right or wrong outcome and the game tries to portray it as a black and white situation.
JD didn't need to be "Redeemed" he didn't do anything wrong there was a riot the rioters were throwing incendiary grenades at them of course you mow them down that is the right thing to do. DJ definitely should not have died

Hopefully I'm not the only one but do the characters in this game look less bulky compared to the previous games. Like the characters aren't wearing big armor to fight the swarm or locust

basically modern politics, the workers decided to character shift to Kait cause ideology drivel and it shows in every way she acts, what characters excuse her actions and not JDs "bad actions" (again he did nothing wrong) and how favored she is to the Marcus and not his OWN SON

I agree Gears 1-3 including Judgement are the canon ones. Gears 4 & 5 are the Disney Star Wars sequels of Gears… If they wanted to keep the franchise alive, they would’ve at least made remasters of all the games like the they did with Gear 1 UE, but for the next gen console. Or they should’ve made a Gears of War game taking place during the Pendulum Wars (Pre E-Day) and that would’ve been amazing too.
(SUPER DUPER LATE!!) I agree with most of your points, but I would rather keep JD alive and find a way for him to still be memorable because as a huge Marcus fan, I couldn't bear to see him lose the only family he has left considering what we've seen him go through

I tried playing Gears 5, but I felt like Gears Goonies or Gears with feelings. I played some of Gears and Gears 2, and from what I've played, it's better than Gears 5. The game feels more like a sitcom than an action game.

Fella Gears of War has always been about feelings. It's about fighting constantly againdt impossible odds. Or did you not notice that Dom's entire motivation for most of Gears 2 is to find his wife?

Look OG gears all the characters are basically just regular guys in a very grim dark world. Their comrades in arms against a terrible foe. It is what helps keep you invested in their plight you feel like some random muscle jocks would kinda be like this. These OG characters are broken people who’s dreams and aspersions are left by the wayside for war. It engages and endures you to them. Marcus and Dom are not some crazy chosen one hero’s. They make mistakes lose loved ones, struggle with depression and how to find a way to keep fighting in a world already destroyed. They are regular guys who can die. The new characters are too contrived. They are chosen ones like Kait and JD who are the sons and daughters of important people often not feeling as grounded. Gears 6 needs a better character lineup or some way of properly addressing the depth of the existing characters in a way that is interesting and unique
Even though he was bland JD was still the only new protagonist I actually started to like.. I was very reluctant to continue on when I heard the next one was all about Kait. That annoying girl who felt like my tag along..

The open worldish sections were easily my least favorite part of the game. I definitely would’ve talked about it more if I was talking more broadly about the game as a whole but ya I’m really baffled that the devs thought it was a good idea to put that in.
J.D was the legitimate heir to the protagonist throne. (Because he's Marcus "The G.G.O.A.T" Fenix's son) But the developers shoehorned in Kait "Muh Feminism" Diaz.

Funny thing is I sorta liked Kate in 4, she was kinda just their but she was alright in 5 she was a trash character who for some reason with absolutely no experience what so ever was bossing around people above her not only in rank but in experience as well like Marcus, you know the man lead in the penjamin wars, the man who not only became a legend who's squad pretty much won the war by themselves, a squad in which he lead.
The only Coalition character I like is Lizzie
JD and Del are fine, Fahz is actually pretty good for what his job is; but Kait is dogshit, I agree.
James kind of grew on me overtime. I think they kinda ruined his vibe in 5, hard to not like someone who cares about Marcus. When you go through all the games I really wanna get him back in 4. Making him bald was lame

Honestly i finished gears 5 last week. Game was good but when i had to decide who to spare. I was like whatever XDD i really didnt care. So i spared marcuss son because i could not do my fav character like this after what happend to don and anya...

So basically the next year's game won't have a foundation because gears 5 is basically KAIT Diaz is better than our main character because she's a strong woman of color that's not a foundation for a story and we're not fighting new enemies either they're just rebuilt
Reboot gears of war and give Jaeger studios (the guys behind spec ops the line) total creative control if the original team can't do it.

This video is actually really well made. I thoroughly enjoyed it and fuck Kait she is awful but I wanted to like her. Plus Gears 4 writing style instantly annoyed me. “We gotta go meet him?” “NOT HIM” and everyone ignoring kait like her mom hasn’t just been abducted then fast forward then she knows but we still don’t? Wtf is that how you think building suspense is? That’s high schooler novel level writing and I know they are more talented then that
Thanks my guy glad you enjoyed it! But ya definitely agree, paper thing writing all around not just the characters. Pretty sure the writing staff did change after Gears 3 and it shows.
JD should have been the center of Gears 5. Kate never deserved it, yet they forced it. They Butchered the legacy characters, too.
I liked that we were seeing Kate's relation to the locust horde, but the way it was performed was poor.
